As an old person I've seen many jenga tech stacks, and worked under many conveyor belt techbro LinkTin influencers. That's why there are no IoT thingies in my house, and why I told my pension bloke "no armaments, gambling, tobacco or Big Tech firms".

Doubtless Apple will spin the innovation of deleted photos randomly returning from the dead with today's date as being for your comfort and security, as usual. https://www.macrumors.com/2024/05/15/ios-17-5-bug-deleted-photos-reappear/

Is it safe, or even useful, to upgrade from Ventura to Sonoma yet?

I was getting grumpy about all the JS flimflam needed to make a hamburger menu button trigger a pop-up menu thing, and then remembered that @keithamus dreamed up declarative <button invoketarget=""> and now I'm grumpy it's not in all the browsers already (soon, for modern ones) https://buttondown.email/cascade/archive/018-i-love-invokers-and-you-should-too/

It would have been my grandad's 100th birthday today. He was highly decorated in the War. My grandma always says it was all the tinsel and bunting on his helmet that got him killed on the first day.

Mastodon q: in the 'advanced' Tweetdeck-style view, where does my 'Federated timeline' come from? Most of the people in it I've never heard of, and while I have no moral objection to the nude images of attractive women that some of the posts carry, they are distracting and a bit shit when in a public place.

Silly question, but if I have an <img src="naughty-weasel.svg"> and I want it to be responsive (so it's got a max-width of 100% of the container), does the presence of a width and height attribute on the SVG element in the SVG image help, hinder, or doesn't matter? eg, <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xml:space="preserve" width="3100" height="550">

Who knows about web fonts? Specifically: if I'm to be given a custom typeface, what format should I ask for? If it has glyphs for English, Arabic, Ukrainian, am i better off with 3 variants of the font, one for each lang, or one file sp there's only 1 network request? (Even Arabic language pages will have English script, eg for mailing address in London etc). Does it make a difference if the custom typeface is for headings only (so unlikely to be multi-script headings on a page)?

How much battery does rendering your website require? "One fundamental problem that homeless and vulnerable people currently face is the issue of recharging their devices. Many homeless people put themselves in danger in order to access power for their devices, trespassing private property and using outdoor power sockets… This puts them at risk of altercations, violence, or even arrest." I currently use Crunch for my accounting etc. But I'm finding the web app increasingly clunky and geared towards how accountants think, rather than how I think. (And I don't want to spend £100/month to think like an accountant). Is there an alternative i can export my data to?

El Son and I cooked kerala-style fish curry and it was banging. Freshly fried poppadoms and veg-stuffed parathas went very nicely with it, and a glass of Welsh whisky for dessert.

I actually feel nostalgic for the old Tories - of Ken Clarke, Hesteltine, Whitelaw: people I disagreed with, but who seemed to me to actually care about the UK and the world. Not the bunch of grubby shitbags importing science denial, Xian nationalism, car worship, Putin-felching fact-denying MAGA shit from the descendants of the mad god-botherers we forced out to the USA. Hateful, cruel, selfish bastards who will excuse anyone who enriches/ advances them.
