This is very educational for me, as a Malay speaker, since I've always known it more directly as an Indonesian classic, and it always catches me by surprise to encounter other versions of Bengawan Solo: https://youtu.be/FCI7_qhv3Qo

TL;DR 💀 it's due to Japanese imperialism & the post-war colonial longing for their time in Java. And outright textbook cultural appropriation. And now I've had the displeasure of learning that there's a recent play leaning into that nostalgia, it's basically Japanese Miss Saigon 💀

One thing I want to point out to people new to cmedia (or even international cmedia fandom with no connection to the cfandom side of things) is that engaging with cmedia (from China) has specific undercurrents:

  • Things have to undergo censorship review
  • There are shifting lines in the sand about what themes/stories/content is okay and not okay (deliberately left somewhat vague so people self-censor a lot)
  • Actors/actress can and have been cancelled/edited out from their own works for tax evasion/moral misconduct/visiting Japanese war shrine (don't debate me on that photo, I'm not interested in discussing whether or not any of these are valid reasons for disappearing people's works, so it really doesn't matter if it's real of faked).

Lol scmp reporting on this should be a yellow alert for us to take another look at our op-sec so we don't accidentally burn our fellow users & mutuals to any state apparatus.

    The hilarious realization over the only reason why my random self even knows about BRICS ever since the oughts is simply because if there's one thing my country is good at, it's cultivating that chip on its shoulder about how we've wasted away our potential etc etc etc persistently worrying over if we'll ever escape "the middle income trap" (another World Bank special) and I was at that age where I was busy writing scholarship application essays and prepping for interviews.

    (It's no use. At one point I heard back a feedback was, we don't need another Anwar. Even then I was insulted. And I was right to be. Hahahahahahahahaha.)

    So many interesting convos going on about an (alleged) American habit of not buttering bread (and perhaps using mayo instead but I assume not on sweet sandwiches). @skinnylatte opened pandora's box with her comment on some sandwich observations in the US. I think I have learnt more than I wanted to know about US sandwich habits.

    And just for the record, here we routinely butter bread, even if it contains, as part of a filling, mayo, avocado or hummus. It may differ between individuals but in general, butter is a thing.

    In talking to a lot of people about their food habits and preferences I’ve realized that I don’t really have any element of disgust for any foods. Not sure if it’s a function of my cultural upbringing or exposure. Everything is interesting to me, very few things are disgusting. I also feel I can be uninterested in eating something without being disgusted by it.

    All to say, I will defend the Cheetos burrito at Aguachiles El Tamarindo, and the grasshopper tacos at La Oaxaqueña with my last breath

    Must be because of the season + the videos I've been clicking, I got recommended this choral rearrangement of Sudirman's 31 Ogos. (Apparently the conductor is Sarawakian?) Short and sweet, esp if you like choir stuff.

    One of the weirdest things about American life to me, as an adult immigrant, is how the rest of the world really doesn’t exist for most people. Not in popular imagination or daily life; and for a few people who are internationally aware, only Europe and Japan really exists.

    I understand that’s how superpowers work, but my brain (attuned to at least regional then later global politics and culture) is really struggling to adapt. I really have to go out of my way to hear about the world.

    cendawanita,

    @skinnylatte I remember feeling v like this on my third day of my work trip (so it wasn't very long!) - "whoa I've been hearing nothing but Billboard top 40," was the stray thought that got my brain to go !!!

    watched an actual historical reenactor yt channel and redid my feather quill nib. I didn't realise I needed to remove the inner membrane! It's definitely working better, I can actually write and sketch more precisely. I'm still rusty at sketching though. The ink is one of the special Malaysia ones @pengallery did with Diamine Inks. This one is meant to evoke the mangosteen fruit, and it's deep purple with a green-gold sheen, which can be hard to catch in photos.

    my cat was actually reclining, I don't mean to make her a shortlegged Scottish Fold 😅

    PJ's Paradigm Mall converted their rooftop parking for the Malay-Thai food fair (one of northeast peninsula coast cuisine types) for the weekend. There are other food vendors too, and also a petting zoo and some other random products. There's also a kiddy race track as well, which looked really eye-catching at night.

    cendawanita,

    @cordillera
    Boy, have I got great news for you about another mall of ours lmao (for this one, it's a traveling exhibit)

    cendawanita,

    @cordillera
    Hmmmm I hesitate to say... The one I'm thinking of (IOI City, if you're ever here) is quite unusual because it's a whole lot/unit rented. But malls here have a habit (to keep things fresh) to schedule any of their main concourse/open plaza sections for fairs and exhibits so I've seen pop-up petting zoos quite regularly these days. And then of course there's the usual pet fairs, and a number of the stalls is either a combo of petting zoos or stalls that are doing adoption drives or showcases etc.

    Hmmm it's quite usual these days I guess!

    This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

    cendawanita,

    It will show you posts from other instances too... That your instance has a history of federation (in this case, fetching content). If you see solo instance accounts making their introduction posts and asking to be boosted, that's basically why.

    The rate of fetching however may not be so fast - the technical reasoning I can't follow but it seems based on which instances yours 'talk' to a lot.

    It's happening slowly, but in a very gossipy way. At some point we're going to need a fedi_wank community, and as it is, some people are going to be accidental lorekeepers, tripping their way into becoming the Lainey Gossip of their side of the fediverse.
