Genuine question - why do the fantasies about "authoritarian efficiency" & "science-driven" policies that I see so often about not apply to similarly authoritarian ? I rarely seen praise for their installations, despite being on par with their neighbor.

Instead, Vietnam is heavily criticized for silencing , while China, somehow, get a pass for doing the same.

This is only half-joking: because the US never officially lost a war to China. (Fine fine they didn't officially lose to Vietnam either ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Hi arabi.gay is a small instance for LGBTQIA+ people who are , speakers, or from the region, or allies. Basically if you are ok with having arabi.gay in your username and are fine with the rules you're welcome here.

Hello hello from Southeast Asia :)

I'm thinking, once there's a protocol i really like, just for Malaysians I'd open an instance called ketup.at hahahahhahahaa

ETA: but honestly Malaysian reddit are more gung-ho about being on fedi - alpha builds or not, see how they're all over threadiverse. Malu la Twitterjaya XD ketagih sangat reputation points

If you're looking to start a Mastodon server, here's what I recommend:

  • Use a managed host at the start, just a lot less stress.

  • Get fiscal hosting with the Open Collective Foundation on Open Collective. You get 501(c)(3) status, which gets you discounts, you get free GSuite, and you get a place to email all your donors and provide status updates.

  • Set up email notifications for reports and set up phone notifications for your email. Means you don't have to check Masto as much.

A thing that will need more attention in conversations about "portable identity" on the fediverse is the whole "I want to move my posts" feature request.

A problem is that I've seen many such conversations breeze past the folks running the instance to which the posts are meant to move.

A request to "move my posts" is, essentially, a request for the destination instance to review all those posts against their policies. Or, an assumption that the destination instance will neglect to do that for the sake of expediency.

Most instances are not simply fungible service providers for posts. Folks running instances have opinions, impose policies, and moderate content.

While you may own your words in a fediverse post - the publishing & hosting of those words is a negotiated agreement with the admins of a fediverse instance.

This is not usually a customer service relationship. Just because you posted something on one instance doesn't mean you should automatically expect another instance to welcome your posting history with open arms.

None of this is my sole realization. I've seen multiple instance admins express this stuff now. I think it bears frequent repeating.

cendawanita,

@lmorchard
I honestly would like a compromise where it's easy to have an AP-software!readable archive for the user to download and keep, but import feature can be third party but more importantly user must review which posts to go into the new instance (or not at all) but at least they have a copy of their life online.

Mute this account for the night, I'm compiling all the interest and related writeups on this whole mess for my own personal mag (you'll note it's untagged and being on an aggregator already it won't go to a random sub)

Anyway, I'm just recalling one of the favourite analogies of explaining fedi microblogging as "think of it like email," and for no reason whatsoever, no reason at all, I'm also recalling how running your own non-gmail/outlook365 mail servers these days is a fool's errand of vainly trying to make into whitelists and not getting marked as spam. Don't know why I'm even thinking about that.

>You cannot set up a home email server.

>You cannot set it up on a VPS.

>You cannot set it up on your own datacenter.

>At some point your IP range is bound to be banned, either by one asshole IP neighbor sending spam, one of your users being pwned, due to arbitrary reasons, by mistake, it doesn't matter. It's not if, it's when. Say goodbye to your email. Game over. No recourse.

>The era of distributed, independent email servers is over.

It's in reverse chronological order (naturally) but feel free to check my boosts in the last uh... 5 hours. I happened to have kbin magazine set up as well so I'll be compiling them later

>...Sadly, even this is trivial to work around if they connect to a relay or set up an account on an instance that doesnโ€™t isnโ€™t blocked. The major concern, of course, is that your fedi data is linked to a record they maintain about you in their own databases, and then use your content to help tailor ads as you visit other parts of the internet.

>If we identify that an instance is behaving badly, of course they are going to get suspended, just as happens today. But be aware that this only prevents YOU from seeing THEIR content. If Meta does set up an instance and start spamming out ads, that is exactly what will happen.

>In the mean time, if you want to block Meta owned domains and instances who arenโ€™t blocking Meta owned domains and instances who are not blocking instances who are not blocking meta owned domains, thatโ€™s ok.

irfan, to random

this whole fediverse/meta thing is a mess. pre-blocking meta or not is fine to me one way or another, but blocking each other's instances, for seemingly unfounded reasons, is simply pathetic. kinda makes me think - why would any professionals (artists, brands, etc.) post on here, if they can't even guarantee their posts would reach everyone in this space? i support the fediverse bcos it's an open-source, technological marvel - but some of the people running it kinda act like grown children from what i'm seeing. i'm glad i've outgrown social media entirely since elon bought twitter, so while i'd like this space to prosper and be better (centralised social media is no longer an option for me), i know i'd not die if this playground dies.

cendawanita,

@irfan
I think the big psychological change of web2.0 where you're encouraged to attach your identity to your rl and to be the same everywhere, has run its course. Back to multi-idents, i say.

I know the fear and knee-jerk reaction to Meta joining the Fediverse isn't unfounded, but the initial reaction of pre-blocking them is akin to building our own walled garden here, isn't it? That's not how we should advocate for decentralization, IMHO.

I'm thankful my instance admin @stux is level-headed about this. (I just hope that when the dust settles, unblocking mastodon.art can be reconsidered?)

cendawanita,

@luthien1126
Yeah that's my general attitude. With this one, I'm a bit more hardline only because investigative journalism has shown fb can use meta data (relational info) to build user profiles. The way AP federation works at least it's not like Tumblr.... By which i mean copies of one's post still needs to be cached in various instances - and with how fb can have the computing power to slurp data (and they do), it's not a simple matter of one idiot individual being a bad actor. There's a multiplier effect at play.

cendawanita,

@luthien1126
Let me try and describe my thinking in another way: there's me with my phone kept safely in my bag when I travel, and then there's me with ANOTHER dumb phone to use when I travel to china.

cendawanita,

@luthien1126
I think when you're responsible for a whole group, your actions are by default bigger but also it must be slower (more considered). That's why for example mstdn.social admin defedding .art for their actions because taking offence on behalf of their friend is dumb and reactionary, imo. .art defedding universodon is preemptive and so ppl can consider that jumping the gun but at least they're working on their principles of looking out for their folks too, even if I'd never start an account there (yet? Lol)

cendawanita,

@luthien1126
Oh sure, for the same reason i keep my account open. but that account HAS NEVER BEEN associated with my fedi activity. But I'm used to living in multiple layers. Having an fb account to me isn't concluding it would be hypocritical to not allow them here. That's just giving them a face they can peg stuff on. I don't update there. All my mutuals can be traced to rl stuff.

(And as fedi is designed to be nimble and not take a lot of computing power, trust me when I say that i do not think fb doesn't have the scraping capacity in the near-term if they don't already)

cendawanita,

@luthien1126
Oh i don't disagree. I've always kept an eye out at their trigger-happy modding lmao. In this they're more in the right tho. Hahahahha
