Does your native language use the same words or different words for "borrow" and "lend"?

And do you struggle with that distinction in English? (if English native, answer "diff words")

anilmc,

@fasterthanlime in north eastern english borrow and lend switch colloquially but most get the distinction academically

Homo naledi is the most interesting new human like primate. They are from South Africa, little people. walked upright, but primates walking upright goes way back.

They had hands just like modern humans but longish arms and powerful shoulders ... so they could probably zip up a tree.

They have small brains half modern size. This has made people astonished that they may have had fire.

I'm glad I'll never meet one, a smart little firebug with powerful arms sounds terrifying. 1/

Its always remarkable to me to think about Descartes and Galileo being contemporaries: so we know how the former reacted when the latter was imprisoned:

“I inquired in Leiden and Amsterdam whether Galileo’s World System was available, … I was told that it had indeed been published but that all the copies had immediately been burnt at Rome, and that Galileo had been convicted and fined. I was so astonished at this that I almost decided to burn all my papers … .”

@futurebird it's baffling to me that cartesian dualism, platonic idealism and the categorical imperative were introduced alongside hume's empirics in philosophy a level but not a peep of taoism, zen or vedanta (the nondualist traditions of South and East Asia)

do leftists who keep calling democrats the lesser evil actually realize that to normal people, they are the lesser evil compared to trumpers?

anilmc,
@anilmc@hachyderm.io avatar

@curiousgawker so the evil are the trumpers, right? Or its radicalism evil to a 'normal' per se?

The leftists see the liberals as closer to tolerating trumpers than they are, therefore still a bit evil but less so. So the evil is values based

The normals see the leftists as too extreme and the trumpers as too extreme, so the evil is emergent from deviating too far from the norm.

The obvious question follows, what happens to normal people when normal moves towards Trumper values?

anilmc,
@anilmc@hachyderm.io avatar

@curiousgawker that's not what i claimed. I am asking what counts as evil for 'normal people', and what happens to a normal person's judgement of evil (greater or lesser) when the Overton window moves and it's more normal to believe something else.

    Suddenly thought of one of the weirdest college experiences I had. I was friends with an exchange student from a country that isn’t, shall we say, friendly to queer people, so he had never heard of queer people. He didn’t really believe or understand that I was queer. My college girlfriend (who was also friends with him) had to explain (I was too annoyed). Nice guy, but telling someone in a patriarchy about stuff like that was like telling someone humans are blue.

    🧵 Reactionaries evaluate moral choices through identities rather than principles.

    What others may see as hypocrisy is actually consistent commitment to the power dynamic they obsessively follow.

    The rightfulness of an act is not determined by moral principles but by identity of the person or group committing it.

    Dear society: you could just drop "sir" and "ma'am" and other gendered terms from your public service patter. Literally no one would know it wasn't there, and you'd save so much grief in the world.

    "Thanks, have a good day!" has the same weight and impact as "Thanks, have a good day, sir!" No one would know. You could make this change right now, and save the sanity of so many people, trans and cis alike.

    @taedryn i think you're on to something but it's a big shift. That beat in the sentence is the objectifier - the part where it situates the listener relative to the speaker in social space. Terms of endearment go here (baby, darling, my duck), diminutives (lad, kid, boy), insults (idiot, dickhead), salutations (my Lord, Doctor, driver, officer, your honour) and intimaters (friend, buddy, pal). When we don't know someone enough to say friend or want to maintain distance we use sir/madam. /1

    So, I've been working on hatching a theoretical structure to address the quandary of MAGA for a long time. I think it is almost impossible to combat it unless one can identify grasp the causal factors of the eruption of a mass psychosis. This is going to be a really long thread and I'm developing it slowly. Please feel free to mute me if this irritates you - I'm thinking aloud here. @Remittancegirl @passenger for me the law doesn't need to derive from authority - i think that is hobbesian at it's core, perjurious to nature - but from life itself, where concepts like 'enough' don't even need language to be readiy understood.

    anilmc,
    @anilmc@hachyderm.io avatar

    @Edent

    You can just ignore & focus on the evidence of ability to do the job. It's the selector's job to parse what's relevant; they know the job better than any vacancy txt or job description can lay out. Legal non discrimination like photos or dob you pretend you haven't seen or better yet the HR admin should remove it before you see it like they would in an app profile. The rest is just recruiter preference based on what you, with all the bureaucratic power, consider professional.

    anilmc,
    @anilmc@hachyderm.io avatar

    @Edent you can do that, that's what bureaucratic power means. It doesn't make your recruitment practice good or your (2020) article useful to applicants. I see these kind of 'do your recruiter's work for them' screeds all the time and of course you can grease those wheels and anticipate poor reading comprehension, but that's just appeasing power by accommodating its incompetence. I think it's better to process less whimsically, both as recruiter and applicant.
