In news. What publishers do with e-books in relation to libraries is, to put it mildly, a racket that would make a mobster blush.

>Libraries struggle to afford the demand for e-books and seek new state laws in fight with publishers

If anyone ever writes AO3 fics that include text message convos, I wrote a little generator to create the CSS and HTML needed to style it nicely, with fallbacks for when the CSS is disabled: https://momijizukamori.github.io/txtmsg.html

It's based on CSS other people created and wrote a tutorial for on AO3 ( https://archiveofourown.org/chapters/14729722 ) though I did add a few tweaks to make it handle images better.

So, I am seriously considering running a little event for Gu Yun's birthday next month, of the 'one prompt a day for [x] days' variety where x depends on how many interesting prompts I can think up.

I think having it start on or end on his birthday makes the most sense, but I'm not sure which. Ending on it was my instinctive first pick, buuuuut then it overlaps with Lunar New Year (as his birthday is the day after Shangyuan).

Thoughts, anyone? I am not on fedi software that can make polls otherwise I would've done that, haha.

I somewhat inadvertently ended up with a Hua Cheng themed fountain pen because I bought a lovely red and black one aiming for Wei Wuxian vibes but the silver accents were more prominent than I realized and it didn't really fit him, and then Nemosine had a sale so I got a narrow stub nib for it, and Nemosine, you see, has a butterfly pattern on their nibs, and I wasn't even thinking about Hua Cheng until I installed it but it's definitely him.

cocoa,

@ehyde Yeah that is an extremely Hua Cheng pen, lol

So, a 'personal recommendations' type question of the sort I suspect many fedi people have Opinions on: remote backup services. Looking for something for multiple home machines (Linux and Windows), ideally with a solid service history and fairly configurable in what gets backed up and what doesn't.

Boosts appreciated!

Something of a crosspost from my DW - a top surgery question for people who have gone through this already, or are further along in the process than me!

Basically - I am at the point where I have to pick a surgeon and I am very 'how the fuck do I even do this???'. Like, I am going to try to get insurance to cover this which automatically narrows down the field somewhat, but I have no idea what a reasonable amount of research is or where to do it, and it's a bit paralyzing.

(if you want to be anonymous and not just private, the DW post has anon and screened comments on! Signalboosting is fine)

May as well share this here too - I'm the head dev on Lolibrary, which is a project archiving information about Japanese alternative fashion. We're doing a big localization push right now, and could really use people who can translate into Japanese and Chinese, as we have a lot of traffic from those parts of the world (but any translation contributions are welcome!)

Knowledge of the fashion isn't necessary - a lot of the stuff to be translated is UI text (password resets, login forms, etc) or general fashion/tailoring terminology (types of fabric, parts of garments). We're [https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/lolibrary](on Weblate here). (and many thanks to the cool folks at @weblate for their libre hosting!)

I got 3 cheap Toshiba Satellite laptops at the electronics flea market this weekend.

This one... well, it boots more than the first one, but I'm not sure I'd call it usable.

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@foone this is making me want to crack open my old Satellite (a 105CS, so I think very slightly newer than these?) and see if I can get it working again... not sure where the power cord's gone, though.

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@foone I managed to dig one up out of the cable bin.

(Friend: I'm sure nerd internet has one somewhere. Me: Nah I had one Friend: maybe the real nerd internet was the cables we saved along the way)

Unfortunately while the lights come on and the disk sounds like it's spinning up, the display seems to be fucked, and I'm not actually an old tech enthusiast, just a hoarder, and I finally got rid of all the CRTs last move.

If info from a slightly newer model would come in handy for your adventures though, lmk, as I do still have the original 360pg manual for mine (and the 'Toshiba companion diskette')

Every now and again I am reminded that I registered the accounts "guest" and "admin" at the AO3, then told them I probably shouldn't have been allowed to do that.

The accounts were suspended but my email address is still associated, and. Well. Periodically…

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@alis I am not surprised they hadn't blacklisted those accounts, but I can still be vaguely horrified anyway.

What is the best place to buy ebooks if I want to actually own them?

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@ehyde yeah, direct from the author of publisher in many cases, deDRM in Calibre otherwise (Adobe DRM and Kobo have been the easiest for me to strip - B&N and Amazon have been mixed).

I usually buy from ebooks.com if it's not direct from a publisher - they use Adobe DRM if it's not DRM-free and at least I'm not lining Jeff Bezos's pockets more.

Small boost - for fannish folk who are also on Dreamwidth, I started https://fancoded.dreamwidth.org/ as a place for fandom and fandom-adjacent people to ask questions and collaborate on coding projects (with a fairly lax definition of 'fandom' and 'coding')

bluedreaming, to random

Seeing the updates on the Dreamwidth changelog journal and it looks like new usernames (like the ones you can link I guess? and/or maybe the ones in profiles?) exciting!

Also curious about the drafts thing.

I don’t use it, but it’s nice to have rich text in the beta editor too ♡

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@bluedreaming The drafts thing is not all that exciting, it's the same functionality that the old editor has, where if you start an entry but don't post it, it autosaves and the next time you open the entry post page, it asks if you want to restore that autosave XD

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@bluedreaming I'm hoping the autosave will be a little more reliable than the old entry page's, I rewrote a bunch of the JS to be more understandable and modern. Once upon a time there was discussion about maybe letting users save more than one draft and then pick from them later (like email drafts) but we never drew up an actual plan for it, and I want feature parity with the old editor so we can nuke a bunch of ancient code, lol.

cocoa, to activitypub
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@activitypub Does anyone know of even partial lists of what Activity object types different project implementations cover/how those objects appear on a server? Particularly Document and and it's sub-types - I've got an idea for a small project kicking around the back of my head and that's the ideal mapping.

Apparently 1Password is nuking its v7 browser app to try and force people to upgrade to its shitty online subscription v8 release and... I guess that might be a signal it's time to look for a new password manager?

Which is a real shame; I've used the app for years and it's great (and looks nice) but having an internet-accessible frontend to a password vault is just lunacy.

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@alis I think basically all the 'web-interface' ones use client-side decryption, so the manual sync ones are only more secure if you only ever use direct file transfer to sync (otherwise it's down to the strength of your master pw and your cloud provider). Most of the deeply paranoid people I know use KeePass but I found it to be too much friction, and decided that a less secure pw manager I actually used was better than a more secure one I didn't.

Nothing to ask? We also prepared a few questions for you ⬇️

  1. TOO MANY because I always have more ideas than time, but most recently, a modern, easy-to-deploy, easy-to-configure fanfic archive site software.
  2. I don't know how many people remember Google Notebooks, but I miss them and none of the other web-clipping software has felt quite the same. Alternatively, a Priest fansite. There's so much to get into with her novels and it pains me a little to see stuff scattered across carrds/twitter threads/WP posts.
  3. I don't know if 'toolchains' counts as 'basic' but - toolchains. Always a perpetual headache with the languages that require them.
