I got 3 cheap Toshiba Satellite laptops at the electronics flea market this weekend.

This one... well, it boots more than the first one, but I'm not sure I'd call it usable.

HeckinTech,

@foone If you can get a higher quality close-up of that screen, I would absolutely use it as a Desktop background 😍 But dang, really sorry about the screen.. That's rough! 😢

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@foone this is making me want to crack open my old Satellite (a 105CS, so I think very slightly newer than these?) and see if I can get it working again... not sure where the power cord's gone, though.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@cocoa yeah I got all three of these with no power cords, so I had to rig up my own power supply using a bench power supply

cocoa,
@cocoa@thread.seam.rip avatar

@foone I managed to dig one up out of the cable bin.

(Friend: I'm sure nerd internet has one somewhere. Me: Nah I had one Friend: maybe the real nerd internet was the cables we saved along the way)

Unfortunately while the lights come on and the disk sounds like it's spinning up, the display seems to be fucked, and I'm not actually an old tech enthusiast, just a hoarder, and I finally got rid of all the CRTs last move.

If info from a slightly newer model would come in handy for your adventures though, lmk, as I do still have the original 360pg manual for mine (and the 'Toshiba companion diskette')

@foone almost looks like modern art.

camstonefaux,
@camstonefaux@furry.engineer avatar

@foone - Is there a monitor output? If so, it’s still a potential pi-hole machine.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@camstonefaux it's a 486 with no network card! so... probably not

    Good lord. It turns out this is the one that works the best!
    the first one won't even try to power on (the Power light never lights, though the DC IN light does)
    and the third one lights the power light momentarily, but then powers off.

    foone,

    ahh, the 90s, when our "portable" computers were full of METAL

    foone,
    @foone@digipres.club avatar

    And inside the top metal bit, the main motherboard!
    And our CPU, a heatsinkless 486DX2-40.

    zorinlynx,
    @zorinlynx@tiggi.es avatar

    @foone Holy crap a mythical 486DX2/40! I've still yet to see one of those in person.

    I bet it runs perfectly stable at 50MHz too. I remember pretty much all DX2/50 would run stable at 66 too.

    slaeshjag,

    @foone wow, you can see those pin 1 markers from space!

    jamie,
    @jamie@boothcomputing.social avatar

    @foone
    Ouch. 20MHz bus. I think mine had a 486DX but at 33MHz (on the 33MHz bus). It was still slow as molasses (even for the time).

    foone,
    @foone@digipres.club avatar

    OK got the LCD out of the 3rd unit.
    No obvious brokenness, hopefully it'll work when stuffed into the 2nd unit.

    foone,
    @foone@digipres.club avatar

    some of the screws were loose...
    this might turn out to be the worst kind of computer:

    GenghisKen,

    If it were a CRT, I'd blame stray magnetic fields.

    ObTrivia: Some versions of FORTRAN recognised the common misspelling "INTERGER" and there were lots of references to "magentic tapes."

    foone,

    the original broken LCD seemed perfectly lit, so I'm gonna try swapping the LCD/backlights around

    foone,

    foone,

    @foone Oh very nice! I had a 486 laptop, maybe even in that range, but I gave it to a fellow LUG member a while ago so he could drive his HAM radio software. I regretted it a while later, since nothing can really replicate the slowness-but-it-has-an-FPU-lolol of a 486.

    Fortunately I have a couple 486 machines again, now. 2023 is the year of the 486 laptop! 😌
