Just showed the kids Windows 95 running in a browser (🤯) and the thing they were amazed about is how clean it was. No toolbars everywhere, no junk in the task bar, nothing that looked like ads, etc. It's sad how things have evolved.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

@TechConnectify I begrudgingly bought Premium years ago and YouTube is now easily our most-used streaming service. I don't think I've ever even logged in to Music.

I’m doing an online class with a bunch of other trans women and most of them are early transition and are not passing. It is incredibly easy to gender them correctly. It actually makes me mad how easy it is to believe someone is the gender they say they are and gender them correctly even if they aren’t passing, even if they have a deep voice, even if they aren’t conventionally attractive. We put so much pressure on ourselves to try to be gendered correctly and it’s actually so fucking easy

The oldest created date in my mac's home folder is from 2008. That might be the last time I setup a system from scratch and didn't use Migration Assistant.

(Actually I have no idea how long Migration Assistant has even existed and finding information like that out seems weirdly difficult.)

I've found a few other files in Application Support with creation dates from 2004, though, so... who knows.

Anyway, it's been a long time.

Does anyone know if direct migration between an older iPhone and a new one would be possible by just plugging a regular Lightning to USB-C cable between them?

You've previously been able to do a direct, wired migration using the “Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter”. My gut says using just a cable wouldn't be supported because in order to be safe you'd want both iPhones wirelessly charging at the same time otherwise you could run out of battery mid way through.

Huh, I just discovered that users can associate an App Shortcut directly to the Action button. I had interpreted what was said in the keynote as they can "Run a Shortcut”, as in needing to configure a Shortcut workflow and then run that...but instead it looks like they could select it more directly and run it from there without needing a workflow at all.

It will take some investigation to see if that's right but I'm much more excited about the button if it is. 🤔

@_Davidsmith I really wish the terms for these things were better differentiated. But I have noticed that anywhere currently in the iOS that surfaces "shortcuts" does seem show me all the app stuff as well.

Well, one of my Slacks got the redesign, and it's exactly as bad as everyone's been saying.

Initial impressions:

  • It looks like Windows Vista. Were the designers getting paid by the gradient?

  • This was clearly designed exclusively by and for people with only one workspace.

The disconnect between what I need from Slack and what Slack offers continues to widen. I guess it's just not for me, and I'm not for them, as much as I’d like for that to be different.

Turns out squeezing down the expansiveness that is Widgetsmith into a 30 second App Preview video is quite a challenge. Especially for things like how long to put title cards up for and what kind of clip transitions work well when every second counts.

@_Davidsmith My advice to people making short videos is always to look at Looney Tunes cartoons. It’s a slightly different scale than 30 seconds, but SO MUCH happens in seven minutes.
