Sunak: we are going to pass a bill to have everyone over 6' rounded up and shot

Starmer: this is an un-British and draconian policy. Under Labour we will have everyone over 6' 1" rounded up and shot

I’d rather not deal with anti-Semitism.

I’d rather talk about video games and the Fediverse—which is stuff that gives me actual joy.

But I’m seeing so many lies and mistruths about Jews that it’s tearing my hair out. And the thing is, people who I don’t think are anti-Semitic believe them.

But I’m starting my to wonder if it’s worth giving the benefit of the doubt. It’s not worth debating anti-Semites because the “debate” is my existence.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@atomicpoet it's simple. Antisemitism is whatever an American Christian nationalist congressional representative from Nowhere, Nebraska says it is.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@atomicpoet it's not sarcasm. This was pretty much literally what passed through the House the other day.

If your president is actively funding, arming, and supporting a genocide and you call him “a good person” and “a good president”, maybe it’s time to take a good, long look in the mirror and wonder where things went wrong for you and whether you can see a path back to reclaiming your humanity.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@aral the problem for decent Americans is that they don't live in a proper democracy, and have the choice between voting for a flawed president and continuing business-as-usual or choosing (either directly or by voting 3rd party or not at all) a full-throated fascist who will double down in support of Netanyahu, and quite possibly abolish whatever is left of US democracy entirely.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@aral I don't blame those who support Biden in that environment, because the alternative, as bad as the status quo is today, will be orders of magnitude far worse.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@aral it depends on why they are calling Biden good. Do they really believe it, or are they just trying to persuade some swing voters not to back Trump?

a reality that socialist or progressive protestors must take into account is that disorder on the streets always works to the political advantage of fascists, who credibly promise order at all costs even while they cynically ensure protest becomes disorderly.

it’s not fair, but it is reality. in the ecstasy of genuine righteousness one may not give a fuck, but then a morning after comes.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@interfluidity the problem is that any peaceful protest can be turned into disorder with some planted agents provocateurs and arranged counter-protests

What are folks using for linting and/or formatting templates these days?

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@ghickman djlint

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@e11bits @ghickman it's fine. I use it with pre-commit and my IDE and works ok, you can use"djlint:off" comments to keep the original formatting when it doesn't quite do what you want. Unlike prettier it doesn't mess up Django template syntax.

Reporting on the Labour party is like playing a particularly disappointing game of pass the parcel.

Each month another piece of paper is removed. Yet rather than reveal a pack of sweets, or a toy, each unwrapping only reveals another crushing disappointment

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@adambienkov the recipe is "take Blairism, replace Blair with someone without charisma, add a dash of TERFism and stop-the-boats bigotry, make sure to remove any actual policies before serving".

I can see why people are afraid of Trump getting elected again (he's a narcissistic psychopath) but USA has looked like a fascist police state for a while now.

You just need to look at how the police shut down black lives matter demonstrations and anti war protests for starters, let alone the military support for apartheid genocide

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@Winstonwells the US police are not so much a public service but an armed gang. They run their own protection rackets, intimidate elected officials, and even conduct highway robbery (asset forfeiture).

Biden needs enthusiasm from young voters and black voters to win in November and he is fucking that up right now because ensuring Israel can continue massacring Gazan civilians is more important to him than safeguarding American democracy from Trump and the GOP. unbelievable.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@peter even Ronald Reagan - not exactly an extreme leftist - took a harder stance against Israel in 1981 over the annexation of the Golan Heights.

It's hard to have a morally consistent and principled foreign policy when every single domestic and foreign decision is based on a highly triangulated focus on a handful of voters in a few swing states and the media landscape is a barren polarized wasteland.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@peter I don't think Biden is a Zionist as such, rather he and his party are so scared of being seen as "weak on terrorism" they dare not do anything more than pearl-clutching. See: 9/11 and Iraq.

Trying to think of a more shitty tech-focused company than Atlassian. Salesforce maybe. As in, a company that consumes pretty decent tech services and turns them to shit.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

@chrisba Microsoft, sure. But at least MS has occasionally managed to create quite decent software, even if by accident. Atlassian has never made anything good, but has sucked in products that were pretty good and enshittified them.

Thinking of upcoming UK elections: my sister was asked by local MP if she wanted to stand for councilor in her local area, she said no because politics is such a hostile environment for women (especially in social media), particularly those with families. No doubt this applies to minorities tenfold.

If we wonder about the quality and lack of diversity in our politicians, maybe the nastiness of modern politics is a factor. Ask Angela Rayner.

danjac,
@danjac@masto.ai avatar

A ton of local seats (particularly in Tory areas) go uncontested, because parties can't find anyone wanting to stand. Who can blame them.

@aral American colleges are so bizarre and like everything else they are this weird outlier in the Western world.

In Europe for example if you want to be a professional footballer you get signed to a club. You don't go to Oxford or the Sorbonne to learn how to kick a ball.

In the US the colleges are more like a football club that teaches poetry or physics as a side hustle.
