Why does the word "gubernatorial" look like it was invented by a three year old?

Has anyone ever actually bricked a computer by not wearing one of those antistatic wristband thingies?

Just got my walnuts for planting.

Will put them in the freezer for a week and then the fridge while I prepare the bottom field for planting. Am hoping to germinate fifty or so in rows about 15m apart to allow for annuals while they mature.

In 1548, every landowner in Corsica was instructed to plant a fig tree, mulberry, sweet chestnut and olive tree every year

Marcel Marceau was a hero of the French resistance but he didn't like to talk about it.

A man is sitting next to his newborn baby's cot. From the other room his father comes in and lays a hand on his shoulder.

"You've done really well, mate. You'll make a brilliant dad."

The son looks up and smiles with a bit of anxiety in his voice. "Thanks, Dad. I really hope so."

The old man pulls out a small book from his back pocket and hands it to his son. "Now that you're a parent, I'd like you to have this. I studied it for the first year of your life and memorised every single one. I'd love you to use it for my grandson."

The son looks at the cover which is titled 1000 Dad Jokes To Annoy Your Children. He looks up with tears in his eyes. "Dad...I'm honoured."

His dad smiles: "Hello, Honoured. I'm Dad."

My wife told me to take the spider out instead of killing him.

Went out. Had a few drinks. Nice guy. He's a web designer.

My son fell into a volcano in Slovakia.

Bratislava?

He is by now.

I'm so terrified of lifts that I have to take steps to avoid them.

Just found this in one of my boxes of shame. Good times at Hummingbird 😎

Next I'll be finding a copy of NetWare 3.11 😆

Wahay! Just got my Beurer EM49 TENS machine for transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (teVNS) for anxiety/depression.

My choice of pulse width, frequency, intensity and ON/OFF periods are described here as I delved through the literature (you might need to be a member to see stuff in the Personal thread) https://www.justthetalk.co.uk/personal/47095/overcoming-depression-and-living-with-mental-illness-iv/9192

I'll be McGyvering an ear connector (left ear only, there is a slight risk of messing with your heart if stimulating the right ear, according to some sources, but it's mainly a precaution as it's extrapolated from animals).

Here in the UK we call it a 'lift' but in the US they call it an 'elevator'.

I guess we're just raised differently.

I'm afraid of asking this in polite company, so thought I'd ask you lot instead.

Just had my first proper haircut since Covid (I'd been buzz-cutting it myself) and I'm a handsome devil.

Interview tomorrow for an interesting job. If I get it, it'll be the first time not exclusively working from home for ages too. Been freelancing on interesting stuff, but it's drying up. Trying to psych myself up for the interview. I know I'm good at what I do, but I'm not great at selling myself (especially in French).

Fingers crossed 🤞

The worst pub I’ve ever been in was called The Fiddle.

It was a vile inn.

Ooh, it's annual burn a Catholic day tomorrow. Got a few fireworks left over. Not sure it's wise to tell my neighbour's here in rural France though.

Good article...

"...Let’s stop believing that statistical modelling of climate disruption will enable us to quantify and therefore control the insurance of this risk; let’s stop believing that the financial markets, through their innovations (such as “catastrophe bonds”), will be able to support private reinsurers in need of capital; let’s stop taking refuge behind the idea that capital and people will continue to accumulate in the places most exposed to climate change."

https://theshiftproject.org/en/article/insurers-have-long-deceived-themselves-about-their-capacity-to-adapt-to-global-warming/

It specifically cited the hailstorms that ripped through a swathe of France (it destroyed our roof).

The problem is in the unpredictability. I'm astonished they haven't already insisted we use the insurance money to install hailproof roofing if we want to remain insured.

Great. Multiple mRNA vaccines can make your immune response worse rather than better.

If you caught Covid before getting the mRNA vaccines, this isn't the case. And AZ vaccines don't have the same issue. Luckily I caught Covid after my two AZ vaccines, before my three Pfizer ones. Apparently the IgG4 antibody increase, which is what causes the reduced response, is dose-dependent. And the bivalent and Omicron ones were high dose, potentially leading to this outcome for older people and generally those with comorbidities.

"Importantly, in patients who had a previous COVID-19 infection (before vaccination), IgG4 did not rise, even after mRNA injections, implying that those with higher IgG4 levels are uninfected people who were immunized with mRNA vaccines before having their COVID-19 infection"
