Okay users. I have successfully installed Mint 21. I've installed all the updates, media codecs and language packs and made sure that it doesn't require any additional drivers. Is there anything else I need to do?

Here are the other reasons:

Spouse's laptop crapped out the other day (a chromebook that's served her well). I dragged my old daily driver out of a closet where it's been sitting for about 4 years, a lenovo thinkpad running windows 10. It's working okay for her, though battery life is not what it could be.

I saw a thread the other day basically talking about how we need to bring back Yahoo style directories and the best way to go about that and I think a lot of people are trying to way over engineer it.

Why not start small? If you have a blog, make your own page with a directory of your best sources for the topics that interest you. Then we either webring that shit or compile them later. But this is something you can start with now, you can go out this week and compile your best sources. You can link to other people's directories you find useful and create a network. Then if someone wants to curate all that into "Xahoo.com" later then we've got a head start. We don't need to fuss around over the tech, we need the information.

It isn't Roberts' lack of courage that's the problem

It's his lack of integrity or a moral compass

"Chief Justice Roberts has the power to change that, but so far he hasn't shown the courage. If he fails to do his job, Congress must do theirs"

Currently my R session will crash if I call usethis::use_version() and choose one of the option and hit enter. Has anyone in the @rstats experienced this?

Clip showing a call to usethis::use_version() from RStudio which results in a crash of the R session

davidbraze,

@lars_dalby @rstats

What happens if you explicitly pass the 'which' argument to use_version ?

davidbraze,
@davidbraze@mstdn.social avatar

@lars_dalby @rstats

Does it crash with other values of 'which' ?

Whether yes or no, I might want to rule out something being off with either the formatting or the encoding of your DESCRIPTION file

Do you get similar crashes in all of your projects?

What happens if you create a brand new package (usethis::create_package) and then try use_version there?

An awful lot of "storytelling with data" is plain storytelling

The data is just window dressing, at best

davidbraze,
@davidbraze@mstdn.social avatar

@ShravanVasishth

I hear you. I never really lost faith in the idea that intuitions of experts, in their field of expertise, have real value, subject to confirmation

Still, attitudes and practices around experimentation and data analysis have changed for the better from where they were when you and I were getting started

That said, my outburst was maybe more directed toward "storytelling with data" as practiced in business informatics and adjacent areas than in scientific research

Ugh

davidbraze,
@davidbraze@mstdn.social avatar

@ShravanVasishth

You're right, of course. The state of the discipline may be better, but it's still not good

I have little direct involvement in research these days

One consequence is that I do little reviewing, but when I do, my experience is similar to yours

Also, what research I read is often outside my own domain of expertise, But I see the same methodological issues and storytelling everywhere

One cause, I'm sure, are incentives around academic research, but I'm saying nothing new
