Vaguely different version of "middle aged white guy with too many #synthesisers." 🏳️‍🌈 etc. he/him.

I once lived next door to a former editor of Rolling Stone magazine. He said my musical tastes were 'eclectic' - and I don't think he meant it kindly - I'm quite proud of that, actually.

Also Sex-positive queer-friendly occasional nudist, but that's probably for an alt somewhere. Don't want to frighten the horses too much.

Once again, the promise of AI fails to deliver - when you ask for a picture of a man with lemons for fingers.

dj2mn,
@dj2mn@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

you try wording it differently but it just won't do a picture of a man with lemons instead of fingers.

"I'm also not sure that generating a picture of a person with twelve fingers on each hand or text that reads as though written by an endlessly smiling children's television star who's being held hostage is altogether that much more useful than a bitcoin."

yep, @molly0xfff nails it. (via @daedalus)

Looking into how to set up a bluesky server.

Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

dj2mn,

@mcc this all confirms exactly why I decided to put off trying to set up my own PDS for 6-12 months.. I wouldn’t have got past the first hurdle before giving up. Thanks for taking one (or several) for the team!

Someone needs to invent audio cables that can expand or contract according to how long they need to be. I don’t mean those spring loaded winder things that just curl up a long cable for you I mean some sort of physics-defying process to change the length. Maybe genetically alter a creeping vine so it’s electrically conductive and can be stimulated for growth and/or cut to length.

Or just make everything totally wireless with 0 latency that’d be the ideal wouldn’t it I suppose.

Apparently it's normal to have an inner monologue, like a kinda narrator in your head interpreting what's going on around you as language. I don't have that, not normally anyway, very very rarely like maybe once every couple of months I'll notice I'm thinking in language instead of having this sort of Notion Soup with Stuff floating in it, and to me it's weird, like some new boss taking over an old job and going "Right, time to try and make some sense of all this" for a minute before they give up and just roll with it.

Anyway my inner monologue just woke up and mumbled "Aye they seemed interesting but they boost a lot of unkiwoo'd oosepoll" before getting embarrassed and disappearing again and fedi what the bleedin shite have you lot done to my brain

dj2mn,
@dj2mn@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ifixcoinops I’m a bit jealous of your kind sometimes!My internal monologue has no idea how to STFU, it just keeps talking things over to itself until (hopefully, usually) my body goes to sleep and shuts it up for me.

I wonder: do you ever get ear-worms? A repeating fragment of a song lyric that won’t go away? I’m always curious about the relationship between music and language and I guess cognition in general.

dj2mn,
@dj2mn@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ifixcoinops (later that night I had a moment of incredible cringe & regretting my use of the term "your kind" .. I hope I haven't offended, I didn't mean it how it sounds!)

If you have an Adobe account, for Acrobat or Photoshop or whatever: they've turned on the "we will pillage your work for AI" setting.

Go to https://account.adobe.com/ -> Account and Security -> Data and Privacy Settings -> Content Analysis. Turn it off.

If they want to learn from your work, make them pay for it.

dj2mn,
@dj2mn@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mwl Interestingly, I don't have that option in the account I have through work, which has a site license. It was there in the options on my personal account .. which I've been meaning to delete since getting the work one means I don't have to feel conflicted about paying their subscription fees for software I used to own outright.

It's complicated, but I try to be pragmatic about it... read your FAQ note and sounds like you are too.

I think probably the easiest way for a nation-state to pwn me would be to write a markdown viewer extension for whatever browser I'm using then get it widely accepted such I wind up installing it

Markdown viewer plugins are

  • Basically necessary to participate in the modern software world
  • By nature have access to everything you do
  • I never have any idea how to tell if I'm installing a good one
dj2mn,

@mcc I’m curious why you need to render your local md in a browser. Isn’t there like an ordinary GUI WYSIWYG app for writing/previewing md? (Because I want one for macOS oh yes I do)

In 2018 Labor allowed the LNP to sign the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, complete with Investor-State Dispute Settlement clauses. At the time, Labor claimed that if reelected, they would remove ISDS clauses from all trade agreements and legislate against Australia signing any agreement that contains them.

How are they doing with that?

WHY DID YOU BUY BANDCAMP IF YOU WERE JUST GOING TO SELL IT 18 MONTHS LATER?!

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/28/epic-games-is-eliminating-16percent-of-its-workforce-and-selling-bandcamp.html

I trusted Epic not to screw up Bandcamp, but I don't have any idea who these new owners are. I have very little emotional attachment to Epic. If Epic winds up being the motive agent by which Bandcamp gets transitioned from a healthy standalone company and social space to a dead mall, that will be an evil that outstrips everything good they've ever done from my perspective

Well, having a go at my first 'app' is turning out to be an infuriating experience. I had such a simple idea I thought would be a great way to start out but after 45 minutes of dicking around and only managing to get it to search for a %20 character I give up. It's got to be something so simple I'm missing it but how TF do I get it to make a line between the URL encode and the URL construction step, I've tried everything .. more info & background in the alt text.

@davidmarsh That's exactly what I was expecting to happen. Thanks!

Even more convinced now that I've hit a bug in Monterey.

Is it safe to upgrade yet though. Not going to do it just for this but.. have been starting to think might be time anyway..

@davidmarsh oh, just noticed.. Ventura is up to .5 release now? Ok yeah that's usually around when I pull the pin.

On the other hand I've just learned I may yet be able to get a new Mac for work to replace the 2015 MBP I run there but which is starting to fall apart, so I might wait & see how I feel about Ventura on that first. :)

For the last year I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening To Today" links in this thread:

The thread is now so long it is increasingly breaking Mastodon, so I am making a new thread, starting here.

To recap, here's the entirety of the year-one thread in the most impractical possible format: A YouTube playlist containing 246 songs and running for just over 47 hours:
