Aw, man. Dabney Coleman passed. 😥

Sandra and I were just talking about him a week or so ago (mostly in relation to my youthful crush on Geena Davis, which led us to Tootsie and, more importantly, to Buffalo Bill, where she and Coleman shared a lot of screen time)

But of course: Wargames and 9 to 5 and so much more. One of those fixtures of young GenX viewing.

92 is a good long run, but still. Hat off in respect.

@SJohnRoss for me without question the first thought is 'Cloak & Dagger,' where he was both the father and the imaginary friend.

    I regularly see very smart people making totally avoidable mistakes in the documents they make for their jobs, whether it’s resumes or reports or whatever. I’ve gathered some of the most common kinds of feedback that can help into one simple guide: Make Better Documents. https://anildash.com/2024/03/10/make-better-documents/

    Saw a person who works in professional social marketing today say "Mastodon isn't big enough yet"

    Which, sure, valid. Then they said it needs to be 10 times what it is now, to 25 million users to be significant.

    Which, my dude, you're several years behind on the data.

    duelinmarkers,
    @duelinmarkers@hachyderm.io avatar

    @slyflourish the advice to use a min DC of 10-ish has always seemed weird to me. Something an average person could only manage 3 times out of 4 (DC 6) is not trivial, and many PCs have -1 in important skills. Why not use this? Part of my issue is that I see published adventures with things like slippery stairs with DC 12 not to fall and think it's too high. With lack of DM experience this turns into a flavorless feel-bad trap. "You didn't say you were walking carefully!"

    today I'm thinking about the tradeoffs of using git rebase a bit. I think the goal of rebase is to have a nice linear commit history, which is something I like.

    but what are the costs of using rebase? what problems has it caused for you in practice? I'm really only interested in specific bad experiences you've had here -- not opinions or general statements like “rewriting history is bad”

    duelinmarkers,
    @duelinmarkers@hachyderm.io avatar

    @b0rk the definition of "shared" is fuzzy. For some projects, any branch others could possibly see ought to be considered shared and only-force-push-in-emergency. For most work projects at most companies, any PR branch could reasonably be force-pushed to make it easier to review.

    b0rk, (edited ) to random
    @b0rk@jvns.ca avatar

    been thinking about this very common git workflow and how git doesn't do much to help you ensure that if you're using this workflow:

    a) you never commit to your local main branch directly
    b) you regularly pull from origin/main to keep your local main branch up to date

    you just need to be careful

    branch protection on github/gitlab helps with this, but I don't think there's much in git itself

    duelinmarkers,
    @duelinmarkers@hachyderm.io avatar

    @b0rk definitely agree. It took me years to realize there were a couple awkward commands missing from my flow that really smoothed things out. From my feature branch:
    git fetch origin main:main && git rebase main
    Then repeat that fetch after merging, before switching back to main, for minimal file-change noise.

    If you ever need a reminder of how the Democrats are the party of the rule of the law and the Republicans are the party cowed by a mob boss, during the “impeachment inquiry” hearing in the House, the panel was asked to raise their hands if they believe that both Hunter and Trump should be held accountable if they are found guilty. The Democrats all raised their hands. None of the Republicans did.

I point it out because I've often thought about going with very small mini's to 1. make the terrain smaller, and b. to fit more on the table. Please respond by saying what sorts of TTRPG things you're pretty likely to either talk about or respond to if you see them.

    This can be a list of games (D&D! Tribe 8! Fate!) or categories (the weirdest of indie stuff! NSR! Anything PBtA!), topics (Worldbuilding! Publishing!), stuff you're making, meta-commentary (The State Of The Industry), and so on.

    Then maybe share, and if the replies are building up, check them for new people.
