    I got two new ear piercings this weekend: gift to self for surviving two 14-hour flights, mostly masked.

    I haven’t gotten pierced in forever, not since college, and aftercare recommendations have changed drastically from “Betadine + neosporin” to “don’t even dare, just mist it 3x daily with saline rinse.”

    do you know how hard it is to spray your ear with saline spray but not the inside of your ear? so here I am, pickling my ears thoroughly.

    I have a parasocial relationship with a man named Eugene who works for the US Government.

    I don't know what Eugene's job is actually, all I know is that Eugene emails me on a weekly basis to tell me about Global Entry interview appointments that have opened for the following week (I got conditionally approved, but appointments at SFO are scarce)

    You can really tell how Eugene's week is going based on when he sends out the list. When this whole thing with Eugene and I started, he would email around 5 pm Pacific every Friday. Some weeks Eugene would email at 7 pm and I would feel sympathy that Eugene was tending to this after his work for the week ended at the regular late.

    But this week? This week Eugene emailed at 2 pm on Saturday. A federal employee working on the weekend means something terrible happened during Eugene's week. I'm worried about Eugene, y'all.

    That said, I did snag an appointment at SFO for March, first available. So, thanks for working on a Saturday, Eugene!

    One of the biggest culture shifts, in having grown up in Singapore and Malaysia and having lived in Thailand and Indonesia, is that I think I can count with my hands the no of not great meals I’ve had. In my entire existence over there.

    Like, almost every meal is either pretty good or exceptional. So I think when I first left that region, I was not used to the idea of food not having to be exceptional all the time. That people save that for special occasions. It truly spoils you

    If you're an anxious type who doesn't like driving, but think you are a pretty decent driver: how long did it take for you to feel comfortable? What helped you feel less anxious?

    I didn't grow up with cars or near cars: I've done enough instruction and behind-the-wheel time to pass the test I think, but I worry about real world conditions.

    I probably won't drive in the city or daily (my commute is a 3 min bike ride) but I'd like to be able to drive to nearby places (Mendocino, Pescadero..)

    eniatitova,
    @eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte

    I have a very similar background to you, but had to learn how to drive at 30 because I lived in Bernal Heights and needed to commute to my office in Mountain View, daily.

    The first couple of days of being on 280 were rough: I'd stick to the right lanes to avoid unnecessary merging, and still arrive at the office drenched in sweat. But! It didn't take me long to get comfortable. Probably a month? To be honest, I don't know how quickly you'll get there if you aren't driving daily because you have to.

    Also I know this is an extremely hot take around these parts, but I actually really love driving. Not the commute, mind! The act of driving. It feels almost meditative. You have to create an environment that feels good for you. Maybe you don't want music, and only podcasts. Maybe you don't allow food or talking. Figure out what distracts and annoys you and eliminate it. Channel KC Davis.

    Also whenever I rent a car somewhere, I always spend a good amount of time getting comfortable with that car. Make sure I know how the signals, lights, windshield vipers, AC, radio/car phone, etc. work.

    my worst experience was driving a giant Nissan SUV in Boston in December after my Dad died, and not knowing it had a too-sensitive front-collision sensor. I thought I hit someone in the Boston tunnels and burst into tears. And then I had to drive 3 more hours to Providence. Don't do that. Make sure you understand all the systems before you move.

    eniatitova,
    @eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

    @skinnylatte you can rent only a specific make/model. I feel like Turo/Getaround can make that easier. also, if you have a person with you who can take over driving if needed, can go a long way towards eliminating your anxiety.

    I know there's a lot going on, but the Senate just passed a reckless amendment that would prohibit the enforcement of mask mandates on public transportation at the federal level for the next fiscal year.

    Shamefully, 10 Democrats voted in favor of a ban:
    Baldwin (D-WI)
    Bennet (D-CO
    Brown (D-OH)
    Kaine (D-VA)
    Kelly (D-AZ)
    Klobuchar (D-MN)
    Manchin (D-WV)
    Rosen (D-NV)
    Shaheen (D-NH)
    Tester (D-MT)

    eniatitova,
    @eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

    @luckytran sorry to quibble but your representation here isn't entirely accurate. they voted to prohibit using Dept of Transportation funds to enforce a mask mandate, not ban mask mandates on public transit. those are very different things. people are still to allowed to wear and transit agencies are still allowed to have mask mandates. they just can't use federal funds to create enforcement programs.

    Buy pair, same waist size. Legs are perfect length. Waist is super tight.

    @kingrat I have two pairs of pants: same brand, same size, same fabric, different color. Black are smaller than the blue by an inch.

    eniatitova,
    @eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

    @kingrat at least you get to choose both waist and leg size. Women get ambiguous categories like “petite” and “tall.” My jean size at the gap is 32 but its waist is actually 33.5 inches large according to their size guide. Never mind that my actual waist is… larger than that when measured by a tape but the jeans fit so 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s one of the reasons I keep buying things from them because who has the time to figure this out across different brands?!

    I started a thing! a new ritual? a project?

    I borrow a lot of books from the library after placing a hold, so even though I pick them up at my home library, they’re originally from other branch libraries in the @sfpl system.

    so going forward, I’m going to start returning them to their branch libraries of origin until I’ve visited all the different locations.

    today: returning Hernán Díaz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trust to the Excelsior branch. It’s the best thing I’ve read this year.

    I was really excited to return this particular book because its "home" is the branch. and I had never been to that neighborhood!

    The Visitacion Valley library is stunning! it's a big building at the corner of the neighborhood's (admittedly tiny) commercial strip, with a generous courtyard out front, and a small private garden on the side for all your outdoor reading needs. inside there are high ceilings in the central hall, with lots of comfy seating, and cozy alcoves for specific collections.

    (yes, I read the Lorax. as an immigrant who grew up elsewhere, I had never read it as a kid. so I read the Lorax).

    https://sfpl.org/about-us/capital-projects-building-you/library-improvements-tomorrow/mission-branch-library

    Instead, the library is operating out of a borrowed storefront around the corner on Valencia. After returning this book, the really excellent Time’s Mouth by Edun , I walked around. The library is tiny but charming. There’s a big collection of media offerings, and a laptop-lending machine. in the main room, book displays cater to the neighborhood’s Spanish-speaking population and English-language books focus topics relevant to the Spanish-speaking population of the Americas as well.
