L-Taraval rail service is so close I can taste it.

no one takes Muni, definitely no need to increase service.

Also no one walks / takes Muni in West Portal, if we close the street, stores and small businesses will definitely see a drop in business and will close

@divya went to see my PCP about back pain I had for a month. He told me insurance won’t pay for an MRI to see if I have a herniated disc for at least 6 weeks and that’s only if I fail out of pain meds + physical therapy. I hate this country.

Starting a thread on the different types of tofu and how to cook them. (Some of these are vegan, some are not. In Chinese cooking, tofu is not a vegan protein):

    1. Egg tofu

This is one of my fave tofus. It isn't vegan. It's made with soy beans AND eggs. It has a eggy taste that egg lovers will love; but that goes way entirely when it's panfried lightly.

And this is the egg tofu dish I always order at restaurants (and now make at home) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uthY_SuR_7w&pp=ygUec3BpY2VzIG4gcGFucyBzaXpsaW5nIGVnZyB0b2Z1

@skinnylatte I recently tried this for the first time because Sohla has a recipe making it into a crispy noodle that soaks up a spicy peanut sauce, tossed with roasted cabbage. It’s SO good.

    This is 52.

Despite — well, everything in this sad, crumbling year; the background noise of a world falling apart — I think my thirteen-year-old self would be so surprised at where I ended up after all this time. As a young queer growing up in the 80s, I had no sense that it was possible to reach this age. (Hard to convey just how pervasive this was.)

I’ve spent my life working with kids, and outside of that I do believe that that finding and creating moments of queer joy is a revolutionary act in the face of oncoming fascism.

So I’m looking forward to a great dinner tonight at a restaurant that Tina and I love. This weekend I’ve got book club — always a treat — and some theater. So I’m going to play my little playlist of Maggie Rogers, Chappell Roan, girl in red, and (yes) Beyoncé and get ready for all the day offers.

Bookshop West Portal just sent out an email asking people to tell SFMTA not to make any changes to the streets at West Portal Station because it would ruin their business so I guess I’m never buying anything there ever again. I can’t believe 4 people JUST died there and they actually typed up an email that said this and hit “send”: “we believe limited SFMTA resources should be directed toward the already-identified high accident sites in the city. West Portal is not one of them.” They also take a potshot at the Valencia bike lane using disproven stats, and try to use the elderly and disabled as a cudgel against traffic safety improvements.

Also, they keep talking about the tragedy of a handful of parking spaces going away, when they’re along multiple transit lines. I have only ever arrived at their bookshop via transit. Do they actually have any stats showing that only people who drive buy books there? Or is it that entitled drivers are more likely to make conversation about parking (or lack thereof)?

    eniatitova,
    @eniatitova@sfba.social avatar

@bluestocking @pootriarch @sf_ish this is so profoundly disappointing, I’ve spent so much money there and was just getting excited for their independent book shop day llamapalooza.

i do hate how we talk about these issues. It’s not “I’m worried this might affect us,” it’s “this will cause us to close down.” Everyone is coming from a threat-activated emotional place and framing it as fact.

They probably will lose some customers: people around here drive three blocks to pick up pizza from Little Original Joe’s on Friday night. So why not start marketing to people who live in the Castro to come out two stops on the train? They have great author events that could be a wider draw!

West Portal feels so undiscovered and the neighbors kinda encourage it? I was in the jewelry store about getting a necklace fixed, a woman walked in, talked all about how she knew the previous owners and clearly expected some kind of special treatment. it has weird exclusive small town vibes.

@divya tell me you don’t understand Mexico’s socialist lean without telling me you don’t understand Mexico’s socialist lean. But also Mexico today is not the Mexico of 50 years ago. The standard of living has quadrupled in the past 40 years, more so for skilled workers you’d need to work in an auto factory.

I haven’t posted for #caturday in quite awhile, and today’s cat is not even Banana.

Please meet Messy. We met her in Sonoma last weekend. She visits the hotel where we stayed on her daily rounds. We checked, and yes she does have a house and a person. Messy takes her duties as host so seriously that she stayed up and waited for us to return to our room late at night. Then she tried to join us inside.

    12/10 would pet again.

This is shocking - particularly when you think back to when librarians were so excellent about resisting requests for lists of borrowed titles a decade or two ago.

This should be raised immediately - in very firm tones - with SF Public Library

@christa @nwchapman Overdrive / Libby was sold to a private equity firm in 2020 which is when all of these problematic data monetization practices took hold.

They also recently bought Simon & Schuster.

The concentration of market power in book publishing/selling/delivering is really really scary. It’s one of the reasons I started borrowing paper books and buying ones that I want to continue having access to, even though I really hate having overstuffed shelves.

@skinnylatte SF feels so dark and unwelcoming, as early as sunset, if you aren’t on the busiest commercial streets. I sometimes turn on my phone flashlight because I literally can’t see where I’m stepping. add to that hills and terrible public transit and it’s no wonder no one goes anywhere after dark. that’s the bit I really miss about New York: good street lighting and stores/coffee shops open late. I know it’s probably good for environmental reasons and birds, but it’s terrible for humans who want to socialize with other humans.
