A dark void that sucks everything in, doing so in naked contempt for the laws that govern things sure is apt. https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/13/chatgpts-new-face-is-a-black-hole/

My toxic trait is thinking that software developers need certification and standards of quality set by a governing body if they want to call themselves engineers the way people who build bridges do. https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/9/24152633/fda-recall-tandem-diabetes-care-insulin-pump-mobile-app

Here's a high-level writeup of what I've been up to at work for the past year and a half. I'm excited to be able to talk about it, and even more excited for what's to come next. https://github.blog/2024-05-07-how-were-building-more-inclusive-and-accessible-components-at-github/

Currently apoplectic that the Speech Recognition API hears “fuck” and outputs ['f***']. You puritanical Christian dickheads are at it again aren't you?

"Data-driven" approaches to decision-making always steer us astray. Measured solely by how many people a car transports, this fold-out seat would be a brilliant feature that got its PM promoted.

I wanted to ship this with a small API for controlling underline thickness, distance, and color, but I’ll take what I can get.

It’s also nice to not be getting hate mail and death threats in my inbox anymore.

Suddenly remembering a tech journalist who reached out for a quote about disability tech being unveiled at some overhyped tech conference.

Tried to tech him about disability dongles and the importance of actually including people who would use the tech as peers in the process.

Instead I later watched a 30 second clip of him trying, then climbing out of a "smart" wheelchair made by a company that doesn't exist anymore.

Anyways! These are mostly half-baked inside thoughts turned into outside thoughts, but in my defense the text box's prompt does say, "What's on your mind?"

LLM-derived code won't give us another equivalent of things like responsive web design or the pull-to-refresh gesture.

Broadly speaking, it takes what already exists and pattern matches it into something that is already generally understood to be serviceable.

eric,
@eric@social.ericwbailey.website avatar

It's the human ability to transcend and take stock of seemingly unrelated, under-appreciated, and overlooked qualities and apply them to the problem space in new and novel ways.

LLM coding creates a curve-fit effect on the entire digital experience creation process that disincentivizes that kind of exploration.

It's the same broad reason we're seeing folks adding "before:2023" to their web searches. We've effectively locked ourselves in.

eric,
@eric@social.ericwbailey.website avatar

Some might argue that LLM code generation frees us up to have more of those moments, but I think the opposite is true.

These moments are generated when you spend time really working with the specific qualities of the material and thinking about its potential.

It's also clear that the time being freed up is expected to be used to produce… more. Not better, just more of whatever is already out there. Same principle as building more lanes to lower traffic congestion.

I recently read the measure of intelligence as, "the speed you solve problems", and the more I think about it, the more I like it.

eric,
@eric@social.ericwbailey.website avatar

It's a phrase that lives in hope.

Intelligence is a question not of if you can or cannot do something, but more how much time and resources you're willing to dedicate to it.

eric,
@eric@social.ericwbailey.website avatar

The "you" part is a wonderfully wiggly turn of phrase. It does not touch on language, culture, age, race, religion, social status, wealth, etc. Heck, it doesn't even necessarily map to if you're human or not.

The specific use of the phrase "problem" is also interesting in context, in that it implied that a problem is what you perceive to be.

I am looking for examples of an app, document or website that is technically conformant to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) but is, in fact, still quite inaccessible from a practical perspective. I'd like to get my hands on something concrete so I can demonstrate how this happens.
