Society is increasingly a series of more and more obvious and exploitative scams that we're tacitly "required" to participate in, but guess what? No one's actually required to have their music there and if everyone stops, they can't run their scam any more.

It's especially easy for most of the people who will see this to pull your music; I'm willing to bet most of you are making, at best, a few hundred a year, maybe a couple thousand if you're very lucky.

Is that worth it? Really?

And for the non musicians that see this, please consider discontinuing your use of Spotify. It's incredibly exploitative to the musicians whose music you're enjoying (unless you're only listening to the most popular acts on the service).

Honestly, even piracy is better for most musicians: at least that's not enriching someone else at their expense.

Spend your money on music as close to the source as possible. The Internet makes it possible to put money directly in most musicians' pockets.

@DrHyde I don't think they're directly comparable, and no, the radio is required to pay mechanical royalties on all the music it plays, not pick and choose who gets paid.

Also radio is kind of a ripoff for most musicians too ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@tieflingdiotima Bandcamp has some issues for sure, but they treat musicians well (for now at least).

Alternatives included @mirlo and Jam.coop, plus various self hosting options

@nigelharpur oh yeah, they're def all shit. I use Spotify as the poster child because they're the big dog.

I think you can pull your music via those services but I don't have any direct experience. Maybe someone who knows how can weigh in?

@opaquemass @tieflingdiotima they have done some shitty stuff irt their labor force (mass layoffs aimed at killing their union). And I think people fear that the enshittification stage is imminent, so they're reluctant to get comfortable there.

Anyone else following along with the latest Deluge community firmware improvements? Just found out the latest nightly firmware can load DX7 patches, which will be fun to play with!

@baymud @nigelharpur I'm inclined to agree: sell it unless you have sentimental feelings about it or are collecting. I love FM above nearly all other synthesis methods but those old FM synths are so unwieldy to program they're rarely worth it for modern workflows (unless you've been at it so long you can program the thing in your sleep). Much better to get a modern FM synth or plug-in for your FM needs.

Quick story about a #PDX neighbor. Was walking my dog this morning and passed by a man slumped on top of a bicycle on the ground sleeping. Checked to make sure he was alive; he looked dehydrated. Went back to give him food and water, check on him again. Then PPB rolled up us cuz some other neighbor called the cops on him. He was getting up, said he was ok, didn’t need medical. Cop took off thankfully, seeing he had food and water from me and was alert and able to carry on.
