@fifilamoura@eldritch.cafe

I write and think about culture (for fun and to pay my rent). My obsessive interest is people and how we work, individually and collectively, which makes me interested in most things, with a particularly keen interest in cogsci and psychology (I grew up around medical science). I studied painting and drawing at uni and I used to play in bands and work in the music industry. Maybe I'll switch to using my real name here eventually.

One of the fundamental building blocks of disordered human narcissism and our destructive and exploitative relationship with the world (and the creatures of the world, human and non-human) is this idea that humans MUST be special so animals can't have culture, can't be self aware and can't think symbolically. We refuse to see ourselves as equals or to value other creatures as more than objects to be exploited. All this Othering is bad for us and it's deadly for other creatures, the planet itself and ultimately ourselves. The narcissistic cult of specialness and superiority is ultimately a death cult even though it's all based on a terrible fear of death and being just as material and of this world as all other creatures and even the planet itself. We cannot appreciate living here and now because we're obsessed with being immortal and evading death sometime in the future.

I wonder what the crossover is between "Democrats will force us to eat bugs" and people who loved the all you can eat shrimp at Red Lobster? Sea bugs are still bugs people!!!

A fantastic piece prompt by man vs bear...

"Patriarchy has everything to do with men, but at the same time, nothing at all. In a male-centered society where maleness is associated with power, what’s really being centered is power itself. What’s suppressed is mutual relationality. Patriarchy is intertwined with colonialism, racism, and other oppressive social structures based on hierarchy. It is a fundamental fracturing of our human wholeness."

In the latest round of Legault handing out favors to rich people and jobs they're the least qualified to do....bet she pitched him on private hotel hospitals or some bullshit. Things really are not okay in Quebec.

"A hotel magnate has been appointed as chairperson of the board of directors of Santé Québec, one of several pro-business appointments to the agency that will manage the province’s beleaguered health system."

Just to be clear, it's extremely hard for a nation to reverse and heal the damage conservative governments do, particularly when the next government is neoliberal and not actually leftist or worker-oriented in any real way. Canada still hasn't recovered from having Harper in power, this is because it takes a lot of conviction and steadfastness for a politician to actually stand up to the rich and international corporations (and the integrity to be able to pass up oodles of rewards for fucking over workers after leaving office, like cushy positions on the boards of corporations that destroy nature and workers lives...). AND it's because it's much, much easier to tear things down and sell them off than it is to build institutions and social service networks.

How are the Greens doing in England, any chance of them as an option? (Starmer is not going to do anything other than continue to pander to the rich and racist. So sad Labour was subverted from wtihin...again!)

It's somewhat delightful to have the rest of the world start to realize what a dangerous monster Gina Rinehart is. Art is having a good week in the portraiture division between the blood soaked portrait of King Charles and Vincent Namatjira's not even that unflattering portrait (considering Rinehart's actual face).

Good to see this being clearly spelled out, we really do need to be talking about Netanyahu's corruption and genocidal ideology and not some mythical idea of Israel that is held by many in the Jewish diaspora and which obscures the reality of of what has been going on in Israel (much to the horror of many Israelis).

So all these university shenanigans to avoid accountability about their finances are starting to make me wonder just how corrupt and how regularly abused the relationship between university boards/board members and their investment policies are? I'm now assuming it's a massive ouroboros of wealthy people being highly corrupt (and telling themselves their corruption is actually ethical really). The more elite they are, the worse they are apparently.

I cannot think of anything more depressing and symbolic of the decline of the West than watching two incredibly out of touch, greedily rich, warmongering geriatric White men mumbling and blustering insults sourced from the 1950s at each other onstage. Talk about a sad and tawdry cargo cult performance of pseudo-democracy.

Average White men totally overestimate the power of individuals because they're systemically privileged. Of course, they also just get murdered if they actually blow the whistle on the system in any meaningful way. Most of the rest of us have quite a different relationship to power and the system.

Just so fucking depressing to wake up to more genocide and to know that no amount of going to protests and letter writing is going to get our governments to do the right thing and not be complicit in genocide.

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples, also known as Red Dress Day. The name comes from the REDress project created by Métis artist Jamie Black in 2010. As part of an art installation, Jamie hung hundreds of empty red dresses in public spaces to remind people of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit women and girls lost to gender-based violence.
"Redress” means to remedy or set right. The REDdress project is a call to action. Though these conversations can be challenging with learners, it’s important to make them aware of this ongoing issue and discuss how they can take action.

The obviously bullshit turns out to, obviously, be bullshit. Carbon capture was always a fantasy promoted by the coal and gas industry to prevent real action to protect the climate.

"A signature carbon capture and storage project in Saskatchewan continues to miss emissions reduction goals, raising questions about the cost-effectiveness of the technology, says a report.

"We don't think carbon capture works as well as industry and promoters claim," said David Schissel, an analyst who wrote the report for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, an international non-profit agency.

"We don't think it's a good use of money to keep coal-fired power plants running."

The fact that only 3 spotted owls remain in the wild made me ponder how animals have cultural knowledge that they teach each other and wondering how much of that is lost when animals are kept in captivity...and thinking about cultural genocide across species and how limited our ideas about conservation actually are because they see animals as objects (and forget or deny that humans are animals too).

On this here day of Trans Visibility I will be out protesting my stupid, paternalistic, right wing government's "committee of the wise" convened to weigh in on trans rights. Dear reader, they are not wise, they are all cisgender old White people full of prejudice. Needless to say, this committee is unwise, harmful and everyone and all organizations in the community were very clear it was unhelpful at best.

"Historians do not get to decide what to memorialise, or how, or where. The way societies choose to mark history depends on whose stories can command material support and whose sensitivities must be treated with care. As the Brazilian historian Ana Lucia Araujo has put it, “public memory is about power relations”. People fight over history not just to know the truth, but because stories about the past continue to shape the present. All over the world, how the past is understood influences everything from how governments allocate healthcare and welfare to how business opportunities are distributed and who gains admission to universities."

Behind the Bastards Steve Jobs episodes are wild in how they expose just how much of a deluded (and stinky) hippy grifter cultist and sociopath Jobs was. And, yes, he literally ran Apple as a cult and using cult abuse dynamics. But the big reveal is really how bad Jobs was at even at aesthetics and making smart marketing choices.

But, also, can we talk about how often the superficial trappings of esoteric and exotic seeming religious bullshit gets wrapped up in politics and tech because sociopaths literally operate by imposing their narrative (reality) on others and convincing people they are enlightened/gods. It's the god-king of yore and a lot of people are still incapable of calling out the emperor's nakedness (partly because it will expose the lies they too have garbed themselves in and live to perpetuate).

The fact that these "private rockets" keep exploding, wasting resources and polluting our planet even more, is such priapic end stage capitalism, it's the viagra ravaged dry thrusting of billionaires who can't come unless they're strangling
Gaia and, when they come, emit a pathetic fizzle fueled by the pettiest of frustrations. There is no sex, let alone seductive love, only death masquerading as vitality.
