Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.

Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

Operating •and• developing Mastodon on this budget is nothing short of amazing.

It’s also unsustainable and we should make sure we don’t just pay for our third party Mastodon clients but donate to the core project.

“With the increased limit of the acceptance queue, and a patched version of wrk, we can now conclude that swift is a good competitor speed-wise as a web application server.

Memory wise it blows all the other technologies away, using only 2.5% of the amount of memory that the java implementation needs, and 10% of node-js.”

I’d love it if Mastodon clients showed a post frequency metric on profiles. At this point I’m really careful who I follow, because I’m a timeline completionist and I don’t want to be overwhelmed.

Yesterday, our cat Hobbes was gone over night. He returned in the morning after 16h or so, which is highly unusual for him.

There’s no way he went that long without eating and I now wonder if he’s got another place.

Might call him Mitterrand now 🤔

Gwynne Raskind has been extraordinarily helpful to me fixing problems over at the @SwiftPackageIndex. She's currently looking for work in the Server-side Swift space. Full-time would be great but smaller projects would help, too. If you know of anything, she'd love to hear from you: https://github.com/gwynne

Or you can join me in sponsoring her amazing work on GH which will directly help many projects in our Swift on Server ecosystem: https://github.com/sponsors/gwynne

Please boost! 🚀

To those installing betas because they see others report no issues with the betas just released: remember that subsequent betas are sometimes worse than the first one and you’re buying into the whole beta train, not just the initial version! 🙂

Folks who squash their merges, I’m curious why you are making that trade-off. I’m guessing the pro argument is a cleaner merge graph?

The big argument against it for me is that you lose granularity for git bisect. I've often been able to narrow down breakage (sometimes long past the merge) due to individual commits in the merge. If I'd merged in a giant blob all I'd have had to go by is that giant blob. (1/2)

As to the “pro” argument: tooling (like for instance the excellent @fork_dev, see the screenshot) can allow you to fold your merges so they look squashed. I feel like that's the perfect combination - overview on demand without loss of granularity. (2/2)
