When you quote an older source (in a positive light), and that source uses the sexist language of its era, do you do anything about that, or do you just quote it literally?

Here's a literal quote:

"The expert must find his place within the social process; he can never be made a substitute for it. Technical experience must be made a part of all the available experience."

Would you maybe bracket "his" and "he" and replace them w/non-gendered language?

@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@fabs @GeePawHill
I would tend to this approach, also, but the brackets also seem like a useful approach--just a bit more heavy-handed.

Is anyone having trouble getting Waze to run on iOS 17.4.1?

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 6 running iOS 12, to an iPhone 14. Waze just shows a blue splash screen.

I updated Waze, but no luck. I deleted Waze, powered off the phone, restarted and reinstalled Waze--still no luck.

What could be wrong?

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@mkilby @tightheadpop
I don't know what the matter could be. I've just now deleted Waze again and and powered down the phone. I'll try again in a little bit.

Could there be a cache of data that might have gotten corrupted?

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@mkilby
I already have that turned off.

I've just reinstalled. It's now "Updating the map..." on a blue screen.

Now "Signing in..."

Still "Signing in..."

After 15 minutes, it's finally logged in. It gives me two buttons: "Get started" and "Log in." Neither do anything when I press them. Neither does the "Terms of Service" link or the "Privacy Policy" link.

I was having some trouble with Scanner Pro, but after a couple re-installs it came up. That could be connectivity problems to Ukraine, since that's where that company is from.

So I had my consultation with the eye surgeon today. The results so far are:

I will not get multifocal lenses because of my astigmatism (that I had no idea about). So monofocal it will be, but with a blue filter.

They will not completely compensate my shortsightedness, because there is a chance they would overcompensate it, which means I would go from shortsighted to farsighted. Which is so I'm not used to at all.

I will need to have a chat with an anesthesiologist (I insist on general anesthesia) two weeks before the first surgery is done. The second one is done one week later. New glasses not earlier than six weeks after the second surgery.

All this will have to wait until the end of July. Because I'm at conferences in May and June and the surgeon is on vacation in July.

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@sashag Good luck with the surgery!

Yes, the 6502 was completely different. It was developed at MOS Technology as a less expensive alternative to Motorola's 6800.

gdinwiddie,
@gdinwiddie@mastodon.social avatar

@Chancerubbage @arstechnica
Yeah, and they were probably on a deadline.

I never programmed the 6502, but have written code for a variety of Intel, Zilog, and Motorola processors. Even published a debug monitor for the Intel 8031.

That's one of the advantages. I never used Basic for work, but I was thrilled when I could go from assembly to C on an 8-bit processor. I remember rejoicing "I'll never have to code a multiply routine again!"

Study: Motels, village shelters provide best outcome for homeless | kgw.com

""In the motel shelters, they seem to be smaller with the same group of people and the clients there felt very supported. They could build a sense of community and they built really good relationships with staff that were able to navigate some of these complicated services and pathways into housing."

One of the most important reasons why motel and village shelters found success in getting people into permanent housing — was due to the privacy they offer.

Greene said, "Having your own private space really matters. Having your own hotel room or your own pod in a village gives people a sense of autonomy, dignity and safety.""

Most books I don't connect with will get a shrug and I move on, but there was one book so patronising I had to demolish it. When I see it promoted (cover forward) in a book store, I gently return it to spine-forward. I can't imagine why anyone would recommend it.... and I actually like some of the author's other work!
