@skyfaller asks about low maintenance bikes for the long-long term:

Q5. What is the easiest bicycle to maintain in the long term, like if you wanted it to be a family heirloom? Bikes that are no longer in production are valid. What factors do you consider for ease of maintenance?

If you were building a bike from scratch with the goal of making it as easy to maintain as possible, how would you do it?

genex,
@genex@sfba.social avatar

@ascentale @skyfaller A5) I switched to a single speed when I moved to SF for ease of maintenance - so few things to go wrong, is light & feels quintessentially “bicycle” - my current ride is an All City steel frame

@meganL you learn how to avoid some of the hills but if I have a job in like Nob Hill I plan to arrive like an extra 10-mins early to “de-sweatify” before my shoot 😂

@sam wonders how to respond after a bad driver interaction:

Q6. When you have a dangerous interaction with a driver that doesn't involve a crash (drivers throwing things, pulling in front of you and getting out of their car and attempting to stop your bike, etc.) do you call the police, file a report later, get away and then do nothing, or something else? What factors go into making your decision?

genex,
@genex@sfba.social avatar

@moira @ascentale @sam ugh sorry those things happened to ya. Once I had a driver slowly edging towards me. I yelled into her open window that I was there and she kept inching over and my handlebars scraped her car as I kicked her car and applied brakes. I am not sure if she might’ve had ear buds in or had hearing issues but luckily she wasn’t driving very fast and just drive off as I stopped to check on the parked car I got sandwiched into.

@xtaran asks about terms discussed enough BikeNites ago for me to forget somewhat 😅

Q5. I remember that someone said you should not use the word "cycling" but "riding" instead. Or was it the other way round? And I also forgot why. I vaguely remember it was something political. And what about "biking"?

(Generally, how do you prefer to refer to the act of riding a cycle, and someone who rides one? And why? Do some of the terms have confusing or undesirable meanings?)

genex,
@genex@sfba.social avatar

@ascentale @xtaran A5: cycling sounds like you’re wearing spandex while riding you can wear whatever you like 😂

I'm heading to Alamo Drafthouse in SF tonight to take part in a 21 hour marathon viewing of movies. That's Star Wars 1 through 9, with live performances of the 501st Legion, and some bits of trivia and games. Rogue One and Solo will not be included.

I haven't watched episodes 1-3 since they were in theaters and I'm curious if I'll like them any better now than I did then.

@docpop great writeup! I wanted to go when I first heard they were doing this but then forgot about it until you posted you were going and at that point there were very few tickets (like 5) available all in terrible spots so I didn't go but kinda wanted to. Do you know about 4k77 and all the other original trilogy projects? they are amazing and have the best versions of those movies. Maybe I'll show them in my backyard some time for fun!

There's been a lot of negativity directed at bicyclists in our community lately, so I stepped out of my comfort-zone today and did the following things:

  1. handed out stickers to 20 random cyclists I met on Valencia St.
  2. briefly thanked each of them for being part of the community and had short conversations with a few.
  3. met owners of some of the newer shops on Valencia Street and asked their opinions.
  4. talked with UPS delivery drivers about how the protected mobility lanes affect them.

A view from a parklet along Valencia Street on a nice day. 5 cyclist pedal by in the protected mobility lane and 3 cars go bar in the car lane. In the foreground there are stickers that say "Protected Bike Lanes Save Lives" and "Open Valencia Street to the people, not cars". There are handwritten notes on the backs of the stickers.

@docpop wait, what? It could be even better than what I was hoping for but I’ll hold my breath for now :)

Next, based on a @PamelaSchure question:

Q3. Can you think of an example of something you could do on a bike, but no on foot, in a car, or on public transport?

This could be anything from commuting paths to running errands to exploring.

genex,
@genex@sfba.social avatar

@edd @ascentale @PamelaSchure A3: haha guess related is for here in SF and probably many other dense urban cities is get across town faster than any of those other modes of transport at street level (if it's elevated or underground on its own tracks it'll beat a bike but not on surface streets). I ride to most of my jobs (photoshoots) and if it's early or rush hour times biking is the fastest way to get around and I'm not even trying to ride fast necessarily.

need help - i am donating a print to an art auction and can't decide which shot of this film swap is best. The audience is folks who might be buying art for their home and is for First Exposures, which is a terrific program that provides youth mentoring through photography. Here's more about the program but if folks can provide feedback on which image they like best I'd appreciate it!

If you haven't been to The Box Shop in SF you should check it out - they have open houses pretty regularly and it's a great bike ride there and you can check out India Basin Waterfront Park which is also an underrated gem of a park (and basically connects to the Box Shop). You can support them now too as they try to make their home more permanent! https://boxshopsf.org/saveboxshop

“I'd suggest, yet again, that we start designing streets to force drivers to go slow and to make it so reckless drivers crash into things before people... Instead, any effort to narrow lanes and do things that would actually force safe behavior is immediately vetoed by SFMTA and the city” https://sf.streetsblog.org/2024/03/19/commentary-the-west-portal-tragedy-and-the-unfathomable-cost-of-motordom

Things that people offer Cookie daily on her walks: prosciutto, char siu, ice cream, bread, hard boiled eggs, cucumbers, strawberries (she can’t eat the meats anymore due to her digestive issues and I’ve sadly had to decline a lot of this on her behalf, unknown to her). They say the dog you get is one that reflects your personality, so.. and yes, people do try to feed me too.

Wonderful Sierra Magazine review of "The Three Ages of Water..."

"If there’s anything about water that’s not covered in Gleick’s book, it’s probably not worth knowing. From water’s origins following the Big Bang to its essential role in the development of life on Earth, the rise of human civilization, religion, public health, the legal system, and technology, to eminently workable ways of safeguarding this precious resource, it’s all contained in this magisterial read"

@glightly @bikenite @ascentale @fedibikes @mastobikes yay can't wait - actually needed to submit a question but was trying to see if it was answered before about rain jackets since it's rainy season here in NorCal. I have been wearing an old North Face jacket I've had but was interested in what types of jackets people use to commute in the rain (been looking at Showers Pass but they are also pretty pricey)
