Apparently the Galaxy S24's "downloadable" Gallery app (not sure what this means) supports JPEG-XL compression in RAW images!

> Downlodable App
> 1. Expert RAW
> The basic resolution has been improved from 12MP to 24MP, and image quality and tone in low light have been improved through nightography technology collaboration.
> In addition, Digital ND filter, which was supported as beta in previous S23, is officially provided and Auto mode is provided for user convenience.
> Additionally, storage capacity has been reduced while maintaining image quality by providing JPEG XL format.

Again, not super well-versed in what specifically this means for S24 phones, but cool to see JXL!

Aviator 0.5.0 is out today, featuring the SVT-AV1 fork I co-develop: SVT-AV1-PSY. Go check it out!

I would like to share a very cool project I've been working on with a couple of other very talented developers: SVT-AV1 PSY

https://github.com/gianni-rosato/svt-av1-psy

SVT-AV1-PSY is the Scalable Video Technology for AV1 (SVT-AV1 Encoder and Decoder) with perceptual enhancements for psychovisually optimal AV1 encoding. The goal is to create the best encoding implementation for perceptual quality with AV1.

We've already implemented a couple of unique features not present in mainline that do appear to produce BD-rate gains on a number of clips already!! Please check it out!

New blog post on the Codec Wiki just recently: https://wiki.x266.mov/blog/svt-av1-deep-dive

Explore insightful benchmarking of the latest SVT-AV1 1.8.0 encoder and how it fares when encoding animation. The author, Trix, spared no expense in creating an incredible number of detailed graphs to support their conclusions about which settings are the best and why. Give it a read!

Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce Av1an Command Generator, a relatively simple tool I wrote in Zig for generating Av1an commands for based on a limited set of parameters. GitHub link is below:

https://github.com/gianni-rosato/av1an-command-gen

The bar to entry for understanding effective Av1an scripting is very high simply because there are a lot of well-documented ways to incorrectly set your parameters and very few who know what is psychovisually optimal. I am not one of those few, but because I know members of the AV1 community who've poured great time and effort into researching this kind of stuff, I am able to build from what they've learned. My more advanced tool, rAV1ator CLI, is also based on this research. I hope you enjoy!

Aviator is an app that lets your encode all your video files into the most modern open codec around, AV1! Change all of the provided encoding options if you so desire - set the image crop and the audio volume - or just appreciate the more efficient files you get from the process. From movies to gameplay clips, the sky's the limit with encoding in Aviator!

You can follow the app's creator here: @gianni

You can get the app on Flathub here: https://flathub.org/apps/net.natesales.Aviator

as far as i can tell the main reason Electron exists is that macOS makes it hard to alt+tab between windows of the "same app"

(hint: use cmd+` instead of cmd+tab)

Aviator 0.4.2 is out on ! Or, at least, it should be pretty soon...

    Among the changes:

    • SVT-AV1 has been updated to version 1.7.0, which has quite the impressive changelog so the default preset is now 7 rather than 6
    • SCM control for screen content in the GUI
    • Build flags to optimize compilation with -O3 & -flto for hopefully even more performance
    • A few small QoL adjustments

Are there any ex users who switched to and praised windows for being better? I always see ex-windows users switching to Linux and saying how much they love Linux because windows was a pain in the ass.

No I'm not switching, been using Linux forever and have no desire to switch, I was just curious if it ever went the other way.

    gianni,
    @gianni@disobey.net avatar

@fratm I think it is rarer to start on Linux then to start on Windows. That being said, every gamer I've talked to likes Windows a lot. Being someone who doesn't play games myself, I don't fully understand the appeal, but that's what I've encountered
