Sometimes I see a Toot and want to comment on it, or reply to introuce the idea to my friends and not get into the thread itself.

With the hellsite, I could do that. Less so here.

I understand why it's not a Fediverse thing. Kinda miss it.

I'm but sure what the purpose of this reboot is.

Obvious cash grab.

I have no idea when the last game was released...I guess it's inspired by the games?

It just occurred to me that I probably should do "wear leveling" on my build plates.

That is, don't always print things in the center of the plate. As much for the plates as the movement mechanisms

Looking at MM_YYYY directory names.

Because you of course want to group January of last year with January of the year before. That's just science!

I say, Northern Power Grid's live map of power cuts, you have ONE JOB, and that's to be a live map of power cuts like it says on the tin.

So when you don't fucking update and tell me that the fresh powercut I'm experiencing and have reported both by phone (which tells me I should really be using the website) after reporting via the map like a good consumer, I might be forgiven for being a little cross with you.

    gizmomathboy,
    @gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@pdcawley I hate that about every phone system I've dealt with.

Asking to confirm a detail or two is ok

Reciting the whole litany again? Fail that makes me upset.

Especially knowing how easy it could be since a friend setup call centers for like a decade, and I was tangentially involved with that for about six months. That was decades ago we could do this

This is your weekly reminder that unless you are building something for developers to use, end users do not care what language / framework you used to build it. They care if it solves their problems. Too many folks confuse personal desires for user desires.

    gizmomathboy,
    @gizmomathboy@mastodon.xyz avatar

@grmpyprogrammer yeah, I'm pretty sure folks using all of the web apps that I've created for the don't care that they are written in perl and use mojolicious

They just care about utility and lack of errors.

if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

if you picked 'other', I'd love to hear what you do in the replies!

Thinking about how Arch [or Arch derivatives like Manjaro] really do seem to have their shit together but I'd be worried about my system suddenly sliding from a good state to a bad state after one upgrade.

Is there like… a way to run Arch with checkpoints you can wind back?

Or is that just NixOS? Like is the thing I just described NixOS

(Note: Yes, this is the kind of post it's appropriate to reply to recommending Linux distributions, in this case I asked for it)

@mcc Linux mint has timeshift that does this

While it's based on Ubuntu LTS it makes lots of changes that fixes what I don't like about Ubuntu.

I prefer the xfce spin, but that's just like my opinion.

No clue if you'll fare any better to be honest

    Okay so

A quirk I have is I don't like it when IDEs interface with my version control system. That is MY version control system. Don't touch my stuff, IDEs

But! I have another quirk, which is that I don't like git, and I use Mercurial for everything

And the quirks cancel each other out! I check my projects out in Mercurial, which is obscure, so IDEs don't support it, so their VCS integration fails and I am happy

    Until

This month, in the new version

    Android Studio added Mercurial support!!!

@mcc make your ide weirder by building it up from plugins...like starting with (neo)vim and add plugins until you get the ide you want ;-)

As a vim user, but not ide's in general, I have no idea how painful this would be.

My guess is that neovim would be less painful than vim, mostly because plugins are written in Lua IIRC

    Hey

    • Do people over 40 keep telling you you should use IRC and IRC is better than Discord and Slack?
    • Did you try IRC and it wasn't better at all?
    • Do you need to use an IRC channel but IRC is a pain?
    • Use irccloud.com
    • It's free, it has a website interface that's like Discord, it has a phone app, it even lets you paste images into IRC
    • Downside: If you connect only from phone, they DC you after a bit unless you're on the paid plan. Get around this by leaving a web tab open on a desktop

@mcc @mwchase what about those of us that look into the docker (autocorrupt wanted that to be fuckery) file to see exactly what is going on and install it via those steps instead?
