Turning out some pretty good thinking points.
If my walk was longer, I could have finished it already. .just a little more. I don't know how you feel about Audiobooks, but it's the way to go, for me.

@Rasta I stopped reading for pleasure in 2016, when all I could do was doomscrolling. Eventually, I started listening to audiobooks. I started with Dickens' classics, and found that it was a wonderful way to go to sleep. I started supplementing my listening with reading, and before I knew it I was reading again. I fell in love with the medium when I started listening to books on cassette tapes to ease the tedium of my 45 min commute to work.

Since, my last post ended up in a long thread about the pros and cons of sports, I'm curious, what is your family and personal history with sports?

I'll go first! My Dad grew up in a Sport's household. His Dad, my grandfather, was obsessed, and he wanted his sons to be too. My grandfather was tall with an athletic build like a swimmer, but he married a very petite 4'8" woman, who never weighed over a hundred pounds. Both my Dad and his Brother were average height with a slight build, neither played sports or were good at it when they tried. Not liking sports became my Dad's rebellion. He became a preacher instead, his Dad grew up in a Preacher's family, and hated it. When I was growing up, my Dad always pushed intelligence and spirituality over physicality, we only had a game on if my Grandfather was there. I got a little of both my parents, I've always been small and plump, what science calls a dumpling (please don't fact check this). I enjoyed group activities and non competitive sports. For instance I played volleyball (very poorly), but only enjoyed it if I was on the B team, and had no pressure to succeed in it. I did go through a brief period where I pretended to be really into sports, because I thought it would impress boys. I'd watch just enough to get highlights. I was basically like Moss in I.T. Crowd. Did you see that ludicrous display last night?!

gparenti,
@gparenti@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr If a football game was on television, it didn't matter who was playing, we would pick opposing teams to root for. It was our thing. But if it was baseball season, we were always watching the Braves.

Trump attorney pressuring Trump judge says what now? 1/…

“I think it should be a slam dunk in the . I have faith in them,” told Sean Hannity on Fox. “You know, people like Kavanaugh, who the president fought for, who the President went through how to get into place, he’ll step up.”

@GottaLaff There was a time, not so long ago, when such a statement would have virtually guaranteed that the judge would do exactly the opposite to avoid giving an appearance of unfairness. There's a reason lawyers don't say such things. They know better.

Well this will be a different New Year's Eve for me. I'm setting out this morning on the second half of the drive back up to my mom's in order to be with my family following the sudden death of my nephew last week. I just want this fucking year to be DONE. A rundown: earthquake rendering our house uninhabitable; five deaths in the family in 3 months; my mom's 2 falls and fractured pelvis; and Covid for all of us who had managed to avoid it before this year. 2024 has to be better, y'all.

I'm getting packed to go back to Miami, but thought you might appreciate a glimpse into my mom's town, Marshallville, GA. What prosperity it knew came in the early 1900s after resident Samuel Rumph invented a peach shipping refrigerator making it possible to transport fresh fruit. Other than some beautiful old homes, here are the highlights: the 1st Baptist Church, downtown, the old train depot which is now the liquor store, and the only restaurant (which has amazing fried chicken). That's all!

An empty street with decrepit brick storefronts. There is a mural painted on the side of the building closest to the railroad tracks that says "Welcome to Marshallville, Settled in 1820s, God bless America." The mural features a large peach, a train car and a mule, and a Camillia blossom.
A old fashioned train depot beside the railroad tracks with a sign that reads: Marshallville Liquor Store. It is a gloomy winter day with cloudy skies.
A bright red brick storefront with large windows and two sets of black double doors. A sign reads "Audrey's on Main, Fried chicken, hamburgers, hot dog. Fresh vegetables and traditional home cooking."

It's that time of year again! I know this can be a time of year where we have a lot of complicated feelings, so let's have a little Mastodon Holiday Party, but you can talk, vent, cry, laugh, or really anything you want. So, I'm asking, How are you doing today, for real?

And just for fun:

@RickiTarr Last night at the end of our big family gathering (for which I had been primarily responsible), everyone had left my mom's house except my 40-something niece who was spending the night. I still had a kitchen full of dishes that needed cleaning and food to put away. After listening to her for awhile complaining that she didn't know what to do with her life, I finally said: "I'll tell you what you can do right now, and that's help me get this damned kitchen cleaned up!"

I had forgotten that the 14th Amendment was used last year to remove a county sheriff candidate from the ballot because of his participation in the insurrection. Notable, even though legal issues involved Trump. aren’t quite the same. https://flip.it/.2egoQ

gparenti,
@gparenti@mstdn.social avatar

@heidilifeldman I had an interesting discussion with my mom last night about the 14th Amendment. We went through a really difficult patch after the election in 2016. After we got through that, she greatly reduced her Fox News intake but we have avoided discussing politics. I was explaining the Colorado decision to her, and told her about the history of the Amendment. She actually understood it and agreed that it was an important safeguard. Baby steps.
