I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

I love book recommendation lists but they often tend to upset me. My favorite kinds of lists are either international lit (where I am usually upset that there are not enough women represented) or books by non-male folks (where I am upset that it's often mostly English-writing folks).

So - here is a list of my personal recommendations of books by women in (English) translation. One book for every day of June. Feel free to join - does not have to be every day!

I think I will, going by the write-up 👍

It's perhaps the ugliest haircut ever, but I managed to shear my llama over the weekend!

At first I tried to get him into a small pen, but he knew it was a trap. So I just started cutting (with hand shears). He tolerated it for about a minute at a time, then he'd walk away, and I'd give him a little break, then start cutting again.

I got close to 10 pounds of (really dirty) wool, and now he looks like he's carved out of mattress foam. So weird. Hopefully he'll be cooler for the summer now!

A bunch of dirty brownish wool in a clear plastic bag, with my foot for scale. The bag is maybe 4 feet tall by 1 foot across. It's sitting on straw.
The llama standing out in a grassy pasture, surrounded by eating goats. He's still got a lot of long, fluffy fur on his neck, but his sides are MUCH less poofy than they used to be, with very roughly cut wool all along his sides.

@sundogplanets

That's a good cut! Especially considering he kept walking off every now and again!

“Tories pledge new GP surgeries in community care boost”

…The tories think this and others are great ideas.

So come they haven’t done this over the last 14 years ?

@JorisBohnsonPM

Yep.

Believe this when you see it.

And it's not just GP surgeries that are sorely needed, it's fully trained medical staff and also local infrastructure.

1/4 "All those protoplanetary discs will be lost, like tears in a rain of ultraviolet photons."

Ok, it doesn't sound as cool as the actual quote, but still 😉

This tear-shaped object is a protoplanetary disc –the birthplace of planets around another star– observed with ESO's Very Large Telescope. Material from the disc is being stripped away by a bright star beyond the upper-right corner, outside of the field of view, hence this cometary shape.

I’m listening to “Wideacre”; historical fiction by Philippa Gregory.

The protagonist is evil. An utter psychopath. Admittedly, life for a woman in the 18th century is rough, and the opportunities Beatrice’s skills warrant are passed to incompetent men. But the body count is unpleasant!

It’s a very long book and a stressful read. Frankly, I want to stop but I also want to know the outcome and I’m not sure a synopsis will be satisfactory.

In short, I’m in a hostage situation with an audiobook.

@elizabethtasker

Totally understand that.

I have to say well done for getting through it! It's more than I could have done 😄

As I've got older, I'm more inclined to think "nope, not enjoying or learning from this" and I'll pick up the next book in my queue.

@grb090423@mastodon.social avatar

@elizabethtasker

Lol, it happens rarely (thankfully) but I detest it when I pick up something like that and I just have to know what happens at the end, even though I AM TOTALLY NOT enjoying the book! 😆

What are you reading/listening to next? 🙂

Oh holy fuck THIS IS ME 👀

It’s exhausting: the process of realisation that you’re #actuallyAutistic and unpicking 40yrs of fudges and workarounds so entrenched that you forget you’re going against your own nature, but it’s been costing you in energy, identity and self-esteem the whole time.

And I know the office tea-round seems like a fucking PATHETIC thing to lose sleep over, but imagine what it does to your confidence to feel incompetent about something so trivial. 😳

A really worthwhile read.

What the MP said just screams even more to me that we need UBI so much. It would help so many; literally change our lives for the better.
