So this is the audience that might know. Louis Rossman (who hates me, but who I enjoy) made a video a few days ago about the scammers at and their bullshit consumer policies. I’ve been following these guys for years on the downlow but haven’t been able to get anything substantive. Now their forum is down. Anyone know what the situation is? I assume this is how they are respond to criticism but I don’t know.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I preordered a librem 5 in January if 2019 specifically because they were supporting chatty which is (partially) built on libpurple which I maintain. I've been trying to get a refund for what feels like forever with no success like everyone else.

But one of the interesting stories in all of this is that even chatty is trying to get away from purism https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Releng/AppOrganization/-/issues/12. They don't suggest why, but it's probably safe to make some assumptions.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl yeah I haven't checked any of the other software they were supporting but at this point nothing would surprise me when it comes to purism. Unless of course they actually start fulfilling orders/refunds.

Finally a YouTube/Pod Caster has broken the silence on Purism. I know many have avoided them for many reasons which I'm not here to criticize, but as someone who backed Purism 4 and a half years ago, this will hopefully get them to start refunding people.

I backed them at the time as they were supporting chatty (which is "using" libpurple (more on that later), little did I know I was giving them $600 USD for literally nothing.

I just bought a ticket for http://www.devconmidwest.com/, next month in . I can't afford to go to every year and these local 1-day conferences are usually pretty nice.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@joe the schedule didn't look to interesting to me. But I'm glad they're doing this as we need more conferences in the area in general :)

Thinking about my time here on Mastodon since Oct 2022, I managed to get a few people to join, but they never seem to post... or maybe they just moved on.

As strange as it sounds... social media is work! I mean, without an algorithm and advertising shoving things at you, you really do need to do some work of following people to get cool shit in your timeline.

And I guess maybe that's just too much work for some people.

Lazy people love Twitter and Facebook I guess.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb on the web version you can select to notifications for all posts from someone's profiles. I use that to not miss stuff.

Remember the world around 2007, where you used @pidgin so that you could be logged into AIM to talk to your US friends, ICQ for your European friends, and YIM and MSN to talk to those 3 weirdos all at the same time? Eventually, folks like AOL and GTalk added XMPP support. let you "" between services but the promise of XMPP never really became a reality (example: https://superuser.com/questions/717272/is-it-possible-to-talk-to-aim-users-with-any-jabber-client-via-any-jabber-accoun).

I have hope that does what it couldn't. You can already follow , etc.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@joe @pidgin just to be clear, xmpp is still here and widely used. While activitypub has a lot of similarity, it is more geared towards social media posts instead of messaging which xmpp does a very good job at. That's not to say that activitypub can do direct messaging and group chats, it's just not designed for that.

@jabberati @joe @pidgin you may want to look at my profile.. but my comment was for your "doesn't support big proprietary networks".. 😄

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@joe @andrew @pidgin I didn't take it as a dig. As I stated the intended purposes of xmpp and activitypub are different.

Yes google finally turned off Google talk and Google hangouts recently. Google chat is still around and pidign can connect to it but we need to do some work to fix authentication again.

Find out all about APIs and why they’re so important to ecosystems on the with @joshbressers and @kurtseifried https://opensourcesecurity.io/2023/06/25/episode-381-wtf-reddit-apis-and-risk/ tldr no api, no power users, no ecosystem. Also what Reddit did is literally beyond stupid but probably ok for making their quarterly bonus.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtseifried @joshbressers Maybe eventually, but they'd didn't for MANY years.

We (gaim/pidgin), Trillian, and others in the community reverse engineered everything. Eventually they added support for 3rd party clients but they would routinely try to block us and other 3rd party clients.

See also https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-19/essays/chat-wars/. Pidgin solved this by using a php3 script that would look at the values of the binary file and return them for us to log in.
