Fuck no. There should be well-paid career trajectories for this type of work and it should be incorporated into a Climate Corp structure . Itā€™s highly skilled work, dangerous and thereā€™s huge value in expertise retention. Itā€™s great that university students feel drawn to this but 12 hr days for up to 14 days in a row is brutal, regardless of what Alpha Male chumps whine about

Iā€™m definitely of the belief that having a public broadcaster is important, but then there are moments whenā€¦ when that public broadcaster isnā€™t funded to do real journalism but must chase click bait bullshit like everywhere else and I internally debate the benefit. I think a lot about how in 2024 if ā€œdemocracyā€ is supposed to continue/succeed in its current shitty structure, majority governments are going to have to be a thing of the past. ā€œCompromiseā€ mostly doesnā€™t exist anymore. Nothing ā€œreallyā€ has been done for good on aggregate with majority governments in a while. All that exists as a bulwark is the court system unless the general public grows a spine but that isnā€™t a reliable counter measure

The kid ate shit twice on a bike ride of less than 2 km because this city gives zero shits about wildly large curb cuts (and everything else). The fact that Britannia intersection by Beachconers is as horrid as it is being, Iā€™d argue one of the most busy intersection for folks not in a car is proof enough. And the entrance to the kids school is soooooo bad and busted up that its almost impossible to enter on a bike and the kid ate it right in front of his own school

I donā€™t know if weā€™re prepared for how many people do not and will not give a fuck about serious transmissible infectious disease outbreaks and future pandemics. I don't want to undermine the importance of having public transit be safe, but media needs to stop covering "violence on the Metro" as if pubtrans is more deadly than car travel.

Sure, you're not the one driving the Metro so you don't feel as in control. But I suspect the numbers would show a lot more violence per day in car travel than pubtrans.

Let's work for violence prevention on pubtrans, but also stop stoking middle class fears of pubtrans.

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL 100% this absolutely makes me crazy. Yes for sure there are incidents on transit that make the news cycle but no one bates an eye by all the folks killed when driving cars is involved.

I wonder if there has been a time other than now when more of the NCC pathways along the Ottawa River (both sides) have had so many closures, other than during flooding and rehabilitation. It's kind of astounding how much of it is closed and detoured.

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull itā€™s not like the single lanes because of construction work just fine around westboro beach for people driving and the NCC could just use 2 of the 4 lanes close to downtown where that long-ass detour is but thatā€™s not a precedent that can be set šŸ™ƒ

Step-daughter of a friend of ours saw the 11-yr old kid get killed in Rockland, by someone driving a school bus, while they were riding their bike. What the fuckā€¦

Iā€™ve said it a bunch of times but I completely changed the route we take to the kids school which is only 1.2 kms away. We take a ~ 2 km route to avoid the utter mayhem that takes over people during drop offs and pick ups, esp school bus and transport vans

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL I never expected this would be the case for some reason but itā€™s wildly infuriating to me. We are lucky that there are options esp when the kid wants to wheel himself to school but this route is also seasonal and temporary. On the one hand it doesnā€™t make sense but on the other it does considering we donā€™t ā€œreallyā€ care about kids at all

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull I do love my heart beating from movement and not getting my heart rate up because someone nearly fucking killing us becayse they canā€™t wait or be slow for 30 secsā€¦ the e-bikes make it easy so jokes on them?!!! The kid is strong enough to bike the long way thankfully which involves the MUP south of Mud Lake which we canā€™t use when covered in ice but will have to figure out a different route come next December.

This is not cheering for the pay workers get at Chinese EV manufacturing companies or the supply chains etc but the fact that North American car companies have made zero moves to make simple, low cost EVs is pathetic. ā€œFlood the marketā€ blah blah blah. Thereā€™s no free market anyway just protectionism, government subsidies and the gatekeeping to keep EVs at $50,000 a piece. Say nothing of the #climatechange song and dance about getting folks into EVs #canada #cdnpoli #ev

grivettcarnac,
