herzenschein,

@nepi Whenever I see Boeing I remember of Aerobiz Supersonic, that one SNES game where you play as the CEO of an international airline and that used actual airplane names and models and had mostly accurate historical events.

Quite the fun tycoon game.

At some point many years ago I did this thing in Krita. I don't recall if Krita already had functionality or if I was just not acquainted with it, but if I'm not mistaken I used grids to manually snap squares, which is why nothing is symmetrical.

This is pretty much from modified to look like a rabbit, something that I used as a profile picture for a long while.

I wish would let me have pinned tabs with full width, though. :blobfoxsad:

I like how practical pinned tabs are, but I dislike how they become really tiny click targets.

Apparently Podman can’t build the Mastodon container image.

Guess I’m… either going back to Docker or having both installed at the same time.

herzenschein,

@arch What issues did you have?

herzenschein,

@arch Hmm, it seems the right issue to track for now would be: https://github.com/containers/buildah/issues/4325

The Dockerfile/Containerfile build functionality seems to actually come from openshift/imagebuilder, so once a PR is ready it will show up there.

From what I see in the docs, it seems like it's not actually required, it's a QoL feature, but understandable that it's a dealbreaker.

Covers are just the music version of tracing. So why are they loved while the latter is reviled?

herzenschein,

@KelvinShadewing Hmm, I think what happens here is that we simply don't differentiate covers the same way we differentiate referencing and tracing.

Tracing is usually low effort and close enough to the original that it can't be said it is truly yours, while referencing is usually high effort and different enough from the original that it can be considered yours.

[TOOT MOVED TO https://furry.engineer/@herzenschein/111304510884182441]

Awesome academic paper I just found whose name is "Security in Rootless Containers – Measuring the Attack Surface of Containers", talking about rootless , and others.

https://liu.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1711128/FULLTEXT01.pdf

You can skip to the conclusion here: https://liu.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:1711128/FULLTEXT01.pdf#chapter.6

The most interesting bits being:

The results from the tests have shown that the design choice of the container engine influences the attack surface more than whether the container is rootless or rootful.

Contrary to intuition, rootless containers do not necessarily have smaller attack surface than rootful containers, according to this study.

Furthermore, using a local container image instead of downloading one significantly reduces the attack surface.

But in general the rootless Podman fork-exec model had smaller atackability than the rootless Docker client/server model, except when it came to private memory mappings.

is a 90s-inspired game I really enjoy. It's about a fox girl visiting her grandma's house and going on a journey to find the medicine needed to heal her grandma.

The game is exceptionally well animated and I especially love the soundtrack. It's at the very least on the same level of chill and pleasantness as .

I just saw this news on Steam where the soundtrack composer talks about the creative process involved into making the OST for the game.

Whoa

In , if you go to App Settings -> General and choose to use Auto or Mobile Layout, by pressing Ctrl and + twice (to get 120% zoom) on a 1366x768 px screen, it changes to only two columns: a left one showing content and a right one with the sidebar.

What was the left sidebar used for toots now becomes a button called New Post that takes all of the space on the left now! It's so much nicer to write long toots in it.

The Fediverse has its own Twitch-style livestreaming platform called OwnCast:

➡️ @owncast

You can find out more from its official website at https://owncast.online

Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc, and when they go live you will see a post in your timeline to let you know.

For example, the RetroStrangeTV livestream can be viewed at:

I really hope we'll be seeing the "show only posts without boosts in user profile" feature implemented in Mastodon in the coming years.

Some people really love boosting—which is fine and even ideal—but it's also really difficult to see their actual posts in the middle of all that boosting.

It would be even better if we can also share links to our own profiles containing only posts and no boosts. This would be especially handy for content creators.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/22885

(do NOT add a comment if you just want to +1 or don't have anything to add, instead just subscribe to the issue to show how desirable the feature is)

If you have , do alternative fonts in apps help with the reading experience?

If yes, are Atkinson Hyperlegible or OpenDyslexic useful fonts to use with ? Are there others (that are freely redistributable).

The attached screenshots show what this would look like.

Please boost for reach.

Using Atkinson Hyperlegible font
Using OpenDyslexic font

herzenschein,

@Tusky Personally I find OpenDyslexic much more readable than traditional fonts, but I've not been diagnosed with dyslexia yet.

What I've seen so far is that dyslexia fonts can be hit or miss because there are several types of dyslexia in different degrees (it's not limited to those famous reading issues that everyone hears about).

I'd push for having OpenDyslexic available in every app if I could.

From experience I can tell that the Alta variant works better in user interfaces, IIRC it uses less vertical space. But that's something worth testing in the app itself.

I've heard of Atkinson Hyperlegible elsewhere, I didn't really feel any difference but it might be quite approachable since it's much closer to traditional fonts.

I feel like one of the big reasons I'm more into ROMs of new retro console games than carts is because I think it's actually a really big improvement that modern games can continue to get better after release now without having to buy the game again, and in that medium they actually can.

Lots of old games have really serious bugs (like the initial releases of Castlevania and Animal Crossing: Wild World being able to just crash) that, due to their medium, are just going to be there forever with no resolution aside from tracking down a later version, and that sucks.

herzenschein,

@NovaSquirrel I can think of two good examples.

Simon's Quest has a romhack/patch to make it actually possible to know where to go with just the in-game content, and Metroid has one that implements QoL features like a map and a saving system.

herzenschein, to mastodon

I've tested multiple Mastodon clients for Android and mentioned my findings in the replies.

I'll eventually report the issues I find later, of course.

Feel free to boost!

herzenschein,

So far after evaluating UI and features, I have about four verdicts:

  • Feature-wise Fedilab > Mastodon, but UI-wise Mastodon > Fedilab
  • Moshidon > Megalodon > Mastodon
  • Husky ~ Yuito > Tusky > Mastodon
  • Trunks > Mastodon > Shitter
herzenschein,

Fedilab has a few UI issues, the most glaring one being the clear difference in density between the main timeline and the sidebar/settings. Titles, normal text and secondary text are too similar. Several settings pages could be better organized: Timelines, Interface, Compose, Theming.

It's a customization paradise though: it has so many settings and extra features, it even has a button just to export and import app settings.

The most notable features are:

  • Following entire instances (like Moshidon)
  • List buttons on the top
  • Automatic translation (which choice of machine translation)
  • Built-in peertube
  • Full instance information
  • Full cache management
  • Time slots for notifications
  • Automatic redirection to alternative frontends for media (from Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Medium)
herzenschein,

Megalodon is a damn sexy app based on the Mastodon app.

Icon and button density is just right, it has good use of color contrast in both light and dark theme, it collapses long toots by default and transforms CWs into centered, large headings, and your content in the notifications shows up in boxes as if to indicate context. 👌

The biggest difference to the official Mastodon app is that it has a Global/Federated feed, and the notifications default to Everything instead of Mentions.

Like Mastodon, it has no section for Direct Messages/Private Mentions. These are purely handled from the notifications tab.

A cool feature it has is the ability to change the button text for your Publish button. :P

It can also add "re:" to replies, and it automatically translates posts if your instance supports it.

My biggest annoyance with it is that it doesn't have quite good categorization in the settings. It has too many settings for a settings page, it should be split into multiple pages IMO.

herzenschein,

Moshidon is a fork of Megalodon.

There isn't much to say about it UI-wise because it's mostly the same as Megalodon. Except...

A small annoyance: it doesn't use separators by default, so it's a bit of a struggle to see where a post starts and another ends.

A major improvement: settings are separated into multiple pages, which as above is my main complaint about Megalodon.

It has one notable feature that Megalodon lacks, but that is quite significant: always reply with unlisted privacy settings.

Also: CWs show a colored blurred thumbnail instead of being collapsed like Megalodon does.

herzenschein,

Tusky looks pretty sexy too. It's what I started using first, mostly because of the adorable mascot.

It feels pretty standard Material style, color contrast is pretty good, density is appropriate.

It is more customizable than Megalodon for sure, but I wouldn't quite say it's more featureful.

It lets you add up to 5 tabs, put it on the top or bottom, you can hide the headerbar, in general it has most features from the web interface.

It makes no sense to me that it has a hamburger menu just for refreshing the page when it could simply have a refresh button.

It has a section for pending followers, which all the other non-Tusky apps lack. You can also schedule toots, like Megalodon and unlike Mastodon.

Most importantly, it has Direct Messages/Private Mentions!

My main annoyances are:

  • Only 5 tabs max
  • Some Account Preferences settings should be in Preferences
  • Notifications take a while to arrive
  • Search should default to an All section
  • No For You section or Trending Posts, only Ttrending Hashtags
herzenschein,

Husky is a fork of Tusky. UI-wise it's just a Tusky with orange theme instead of blue.

Unlike Tusky, it has a setting for Live Notifications, which adds a permanent notification but ensures you get notified ASAP.

Among its notable features are the ability to anonymize uploaded filenames, automated crash reporting, hide live notification usernames, use zero-width spaces for emojis, and the ability to follow Akkoma bubbles (it doesn't really work since Mastodon lacks this functionality).

It has no silly hamburger menu for refresh, and it simply uses swipe-to-refresh, just like Yuito.

It also has a 9 tab limit!

It has many controls for text formatting that Yuito and Tusky lack!

My main annoyances are three:

  • A bug: Chats don't load at all. The feature is broken.
  • Bubbles should be hidden for people who use Mastodon (and not Pleroma, Akkoma etc)
  • I don't care or want to see a fanservice foxgirl mascot when a page is empty, please have a toggle to remove the mascot from showing up :P
herzenschein,

@tcely Yes, I found it.

Immediately turned it on, now it's much better :P

mic, to random
@mic@chitter.xyz avatar

Is it possible to have a bigger text box field on mastodon? Is it server specific or just a default?

herzenschein,

@mic On the website, if you increase zoom enough, your text box will increase to more than half the entire screen.
