Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc, and when they go live you will see a post in your timeline to let you know.

PeerTube's live streaming was originally launched without chat and introduced later as an optional plugin later. PeerTube is mainly meant as a YouTube alternative, livestreaming is a side thing.
OwnCast was built as a Twitch alternative and the built-in chat is much better, with options for verifying your identity.

PeerTube allows other people to join a server, OwnCast is currently just for self-hosting by individuals.
Let me start by saying that you don't need to mess with your NAT or ISP to get aired on thirdparty #PeerTube instance. #Owncast, on the other hand, would require you to set up some reverse proxy in order to let others see you.
At the moment, though, PeerTube's live chat highly suffers from bot abuse and the lack of interoperability with #Fediverse. On Owncast, you can identify yourself in chat by logging in via Mastodon, for example, and you can have some guards to prevent spam.

My one biggest hang-up about Owncast is that it is a strictly single-tenant application. It does not support multi-streaming. So I can't, like... Have an owncast instance that I can use to host myself and multiple friends all streaming together.
Multi-streaming is a feature supported by both Picarto and Twitch, and it's something I would love to be able to do together with friends, each of us streaming our own thing and we can vibe together a la parallel play.
@feditips@owncast Or if we're playing a multiplayer game together, the audience can get multiple players' perspectives of the game simultaneously, like if we each go off in different directions to do our own things for a bit.
@feditips@owncast@rstv I find the name "owncast" rather a turn off, it seems dumb and lame. I want a more creative name, one that strikes me as someone having put in the effort to name it in a cool futuristic and open manner.
@feditips@owncast Yeah I have no doubt it's a fine service/product, but the name reminds me of MukulCast, IceCast, and all those failures before the podcast revolution.

And they did have enough corporate baking at the start to pick a name, you believe? This is hardly a correlation. But what usually tends to happen is that a good name acts as a beacon for sponsors.
@feditips@austincnunn@owncast it's not offensive, it's just "blah". It has no pizzaz! It has no joyous spark. It's not like the distribution name Ubuntu, which shows mystery and intrigue. :)
