@DanielMenjivar @anne_twain @kamikat @sewing This Juki is the serger I have now, but I’d like to move to an air threader someday - did you move up to a different machine you like better? I haven’t done a lot of research (except to gawk at the air threading videos) but if they’re all plastic inside that doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

@heartcookie @DanielMenjivar @anne_twain @kamikat @sewing Whitney how do you like your Babylock? That's the one in the videos I watch. It looks pretty great.

So frustrated at the NYT article about Dooce. No mention of the brutal trolling she dealt with for years. Yes she lived with depression but it’s sorely incomplete to discuss her online life and focus on the money while completely omitting the years of constant abuse, the doxing. I hadn’t read her blog since 2017 or so and I hear she said some problematic things the last few years. I don’t know anything about that but I know how much she loved her girls. I’m so sorry for them.

@fahrni I felt the same. I had thought her depression was successfully treated. I was really surprised.

When my kids were little there would be nights when they were just so tired and ready for sleep that the sight of their beds clearly blissed them out. No arguing, no fussing on those nights. They welcomed the whole routine. They were ready. They’d climb in with little smiles and tuck in and just have this look like, “Aaahhhhh, yesss, my little nest, we meet again.”

That is totally me tonight coming back to our comfy and familiar bed after three nights away.

Got to Portland just in time for rush hour traffic! Luckily we can use the HOV lane, which I told Greg stood for “Hollie and One Very handsome person”.

For the last couple of years orcas have been ramming and breaking the rudders of small boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal. They've actually figured out that without a rudder a boat stops moving, that's pretty forking impressive. They sunk at least one (but didn't attack the lifeboat). Hundreds of these events have happened, it's now a known hazard in the area and boats are advised to avoid the area if they can.

hollie,

Before the Well Actually guys chime in, yes a boat can still move without a rudder, but not safely (i.e. steering is gone, most boats don't like to collide with things or begin veering off course) so when you lose a rudder on a sailboat you usually stop, heave to, and stay in one place while you figure out what to do.

That the orcas are watching this unfold and connecting the dots and then collectively deciding that rudders are their new target is kind of amazing.

@robryk I'm picturing a movie now with a plot line about TRULY DIABOLICAL orcas. :)

Someone is complaining about how un-fun Mastodon is as evidenced by there being no big energy here about the Met Gala (which I guess happened recently?) and holy cats does that illustrate for me the vast human differences in perceptions of “fun”.

Jupes just texted me the latest work of art they finished at school. I asked if I could share it, they said sure. Their portrayal of movement is just getting so good, I’m so impressed! There was another one they did recently of a fairy woman standing in a field and bending slightly over, and you could see the wind billowing in her skirts and bending the grass.

Hey Apple/Mac nerds! :) I don't use Mail app at all, but my dad does, and it's doing a thing where it comes up from nowhere by itself, and will put whatever he's currently doing into a split screen. It's acting possessed (i.e. corrupted but he can't download a new copy). He can't exit the app or change the screen "without going to the spinning beach ball of death". He's pretty tech savvy and rebooting his machine doesn't work. He's got an iMac running Catalina 10.15.7. Any ideas?

I tried to introduce someone in work to Mastodon. They asked if there were any plant based instances. Focused on gardening and horticulture. I honestly don't know where to go to find out if there are such instances. Any help people could give to find such an instance would be greatly appriciated.

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@caffination I haven't run into any botany or horticulture-focused instances that I'm aware of, but a great way to find them might be to add some tags like:

I have spent the last two weeks in conferences with other science communicators and the general consensus in discussions was that (1) Twitter is dying and (2) it’s not clear what will replace it. (And not much enthusiasm about Mastodon, it seems.)

hollie,
@hollie@social.coop avatar

@AstroKatie Were there any reasons given for not feeling positively about Mastodon?

Coders - sorry, but especially men - please try to be more conscious of how you're phrasing things when in conversations about how easy or difficult concepts are, to people who either don't code or are brand new.

Phrases like, "I don't see why that's difficult to understand," or "that's just obvious," immediately (and often completely) knock down the courage of the person asking for help (or even someone just listening to your conversation).

A number of people seem to be having stressful days after unrestful nights, so I thought I’d share this photo of Vice Admiral Finnegan Nimoy Reginald Kirkpatrick, Earl of Barkington, at the start of his naval career. May you find sustenance in this early capturing of he who started from such humble, floppy-eared log-walking-by-the-shore beginnings, but would later become a decorated officer and hero of the sea, respected and beloved by all who know him.

If your instance is blocking an instance with folks you'd like to still read, you can add any Mastodon account to your feed reader (I like NetNewsWire myself) by using the following formula:
