Extractivism and Resistance at Europe's Frontlines

...

how,

@edri

Why is a myth?

Nina Djukanovic and . Rio Tinto discovered a large réservé of lithium in Serbia. Mining was supposed to start in January last year. But Resistance blocked the project from happening. After months of massive protests, the government cancelled the mining permit in January 2022.

Last week the Serbian government announced they would like to reopen negotiations with Rio Tinto.

Mariana In northern Portugal, an open pit mine would destroy 600 Ha of land in the middle of an agricultural region. The population has been challenging this mining project. The mine should have opened in 2019 but it's not operating yet. Repression is intensifying and violence is growing.

Diego: Europe makes about 6% of works population but consumes more than 20% of the world's mined lithium.

Mining pollution is really bad. It's slow pollution, makes years to show up, for example, in statistics of high cancer rates.

European law in terms of mining pollution is worse than Peru, Argentina or China.

Mining waste management is going to be dealt with by future generations. Very impactful.

@mozilla when I read on thunderbird.net

"Did you know that less than 1% of Thunderbird users fund all the work we do?"

I immediately think about your CEO yearly salary and close the window.

I am shocked to see "expert" people on stage about telling about markets and government regulation. Go back to Commons 101, Mr Linux foundation.

That said, 99% of funding is geared towards tech... but if we want to build internet for humans and the digital commons, how do we fund the required human centric community work to sustain the stewardship of the commons?

No, , it's not OK to send unsolicited email via /etc/cron.daily to advertise your racketeering activity of pay-for-security-patches-while-you-can.

And above that, it comes with unwanted broken software? Let me tell you: there is a funny 'ubuntu-deluxe' script that will help people move away from your creep and upgrade to Deluxe AKA Debian stable.

Buh bye Ubuntu. I should have done this earlier, but you gave me a kick to finally do it.

Oh, so that's why people are mentioning BirdSite these days. As corporations move away from the public and open Internet, we can see the evergreen pattern of embrace-extend-extinguish that capitalism likes to stand for.

  1. The Internet is publicly funded;
  2. the Open Science Foundation privatizes it so that Ze Market can operate its "self-regulation"
  3. Military-funded corporations boom and skyrocket into worldwide "leaders"
  4. They buy and kill any competition
  5. Finally you change protocols.

@how@s10y.eu avatar

Fortunately @EC_DIGIT you saw that coming, and you embraced the before the batteries went dead on the global megaphone, right?

Maybe this time the @EU_Commission will consider the necessity of as a digital infrastructure?

Let's hope our work at @NGIZero is not vain and limited to polishing the mirrors of institutions.

Your is as convincing as Von Der Leyen playing elected queen of the EU.

Is this a bad Disney movie or am I having a nightmare?
