Tonight I went to see a “Lion King Jr.” musical performance produced by the middle-schoolers of my kid’s public school, and it was impressive. Original costumes, scenery, lights, music, choreography, everything was well above my expectations.

It did reinforce my belief that American education prioritizes performing arts which leads to better outcomes when it comes to theater and cinema.

How do people parent without having a partner or self who did their thesis on zeitgebers?!

hypolite,

@silverwizard Is it me or the syntax in your post is slightly lacking?

hypolite,

@silverwizard Yes, sorry, I have realized the error of my way which leads to my follow-up question: what the fuck are zeitgebers and how do they relate to parenting?

hypolite,

@silverwizard Thank you for the elaboration!

Jordan Klepper interviews Jonathan Haidt about how to give children a childhood and create anti-fragile children:

The Daily Show: "Jonathan Haidt - "The Anxious Generation""

Jonathan Haidt - "The Anxious Generation" | The Daily Show

hypolite,

@clacke I couldn’t get to the end of the interview given the amount of falsehoods uttered. What did you find interesting in it?

hypolite,

@clacke Let’s see, off the top of my head:

  • Smartphones and Internet caused a sudden increase in teen girl malaise: Just like the sudden increase in reported transgenderism at around the same time, it is more likely Internet increased the accuracy of these reports by giving individuals more freedom to speak about it. I’ve known several depressed teen girls in my day, but they wouldn’t have opened about it on the Internet because it just didn’t exist yet. I’m aware about Instagram’s negative reinforcement loop, but I don’t believe it’s the main cause for an increase in reported depression.
  • Unsupervised group play is beneficial to learn conflict resolution: Unless you're short, fat, wear glasses, a girl, non-white, etc… Haidt has never been any of these, and it shows.
  • God-shaped hole: I don’t even want to know what that was about, I dropped from the video at that point.
  • “Anti-fragile” kids: Haidt is basing his ridiculous concept on his personal childhood, a white man raised in the 70’s to draw conclusions about a whole generation. What about all his pairs who didn’t make it, either physically or mentally, because parenting was absent or cruel at the time? The survivor bias is strong.

Between a wrong read of flawed data (because the collection method changed drastically in 2010) and an obvious personal experience bias, his books is mostly useless.

I do agree with the 4 points you made, but I don’t think they were the main takeaways of this interview.

A fun climate adaptation update from the world of roofing construction:

-blue roofs, which are designed to retain water. New to me. One must design roof deck to hold greater loads, of course, but this is going to be a requirement across the board regardless of whether one builds a blue roof or not, just because of increased storm severity. Anyway, the water retained on a blue roof can be directed inside to water plants or, I suppose, flush toilets. Or it can be released into the storm drain system, but slowly, thus reducing local flooding. Stored water can insulate and it can actively cool a building during hot weather as it evaporates.

-green roofs, you've probably heard about them, it's a roof with plants on top! Also requires increased load-bearing capacity. Can be challenging to maintain, especially during dry weather. But the advantages: insulation and cooling, reduction in flooding and in air pollution impacts. When paired with solar panels, they can increase the efficiency of electricity generation, since photovoltaic panels don't love operating in high heat.

-the simplest roofing climate intervention: changing the color of the roofing membrane or shingles from dark to light. A simple increase in albedo can decrease temperatures in the vicinity 1 - 2 C.

hypolite,

@SallyStrange I live on the 9th floor in a traditionally 3-floor brownstones neighborhood and I've seen several buildings' roofing change from mate black to silver over the past years. It's probably better for these buildings' insulation, but it has drastically increased the amount of reflected sunlight we are getting in our own apartment!

It still tickles me that the TERFS and Transphobes tried to claim Terry Pratchett as their own, and everyone who actually knew him, including his daughter, and co-author Neil Gaiman, was like WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, you couldn't be further from the truth.

hypolite,

@kingu With the same strategy, huh? I tried the combination of the top scorer but I couldn’t get past the first few waves because of the small number of attack turrets. I understand the strategy but it’s a very late game-focused one that requires both luck and skill to clear the first levels when you aren’t smothering the field with fire yet.

Again the FOSS world has proven to be vigilant and proactive in finding bugs and backdoors, IMHO. The level of transparency is stellar, especially compared to proprietary software companies. What the FOSS world has accomplished in 24 hours after detection of the backdoor code in deserves a moment of humbleness. Instead we have flamewars and armchair experts shouting that we must change everything NOW. Which would introduce even more risks. Progress is made iteratively. Learn, adapt, repeat.

hypolite,

@Natanox @jwildeboer Interestingly, the biggest obstacle to this process is GitHub unilaterally closing access to the relevant repository, preventing people to inspect the offending code and breaking links that people had already published during their research.
