Meir was truly a horrible person, on many levels. Other than retorting that there's no such thing as "Palestinian people" she also thought Arabs don't really love their children that much... words can impact real life.

@Hypocritopotami @oatmeal @israel @palestine you seem to be confusing PLO and hamas. Hamas are all about "Islam Uber alles", they want a caliphate, world domination for Islam, death to all non-muslims. It's right there in their charter. They use child labour in Gaza to build their bunkers and tunnels under hospitals and schools, they don't give a fig about Palestinians, the publically executed Palestinian authority civil servants when they took over Gaza.

@timnitGebru @danielhz not denying at all, I have a lot of criticism against my government and our military, and I am very vocal about the way we treat Palestinians, but the situation is a bit more complex than just throwing big words like genocide and colonialism, especially when people start marching in American and British streets with banners of ISIS calling for the eradication of my entire ethnic group.

So If you think you know enough about this mess to pick sides, trust me you don't.

Queen Rania's speech reminds me of two things. The first is that in 2015, after ISIS burned a Jordanian pilot to death, Jordan executed two prisoners in a reprisal. The second is that the French Revolution was a good thing and the entire Reign of Terror had nearly two orders of magnitude fewer deaths than Louis XIV's famines.

Some disanalogies between Israel and South Africa:

  1. Hamas is a lot more brutal than the ANC ever was.

  2. A two-state solution is viable for Israel, as nearly all Israelis live within the Green Line or swappable territory; no South African province is even plurality-white (the Western Cape is 16%).

  3. The bantustan analogy is not really right for Gaza; it holds up better in the West Bank Area A, but there too, it lacks South Africa's random assignment of black South Africans to a bantustan.

@Alon this nitpicking helps nothing. There's a separate class of people, they have less writes, the courts use a different set of rules for them, their movement is restricted and some of their human rights are hurt. Apartheid is not a 1:1 match, but it's a pretty fair approximation. It's a shitty situation to maintain over generations (3 and counting).

To add to my thread about German guilt, we have a culturally very similar place that differs from Germany mainly in its lack of Holocaust guilt: Austria. Where Germany feels guilt, Austria whines that it was the Nazis' first victim. And Austria, with its open anti-Semitism, is also a lot more racist than Germany. FPÖ is legitimate in the eyes of much of Austria; AfD hopes that Friedrich Merz will wink in its direction a little more. @DocCarms not sure if that's the right word here but yeah, it's quite horrific. Hamas slaughters and hides behind citizens and the IDF should have much better solutions by now for that known, given situation of over 20 years. As an Israeli I'm angry this is how my own government decides to solve this horrible situation.

אוקי, עדכונים ובירורים: אותו אדם הוא ראש אירגון "חוננו" הקיצוני, נראה שהוא לא הציג את עצמו כאבא לחטופה אלא כנציג 5 משפחות חטופים בארגון שהוקם כנראה במהירות באותו הבוקר כדי להראות כאילו יש שני ארגוני חטופים, אחד בעד ביבי והשני "של סמולנים". אחרי ההצגה המוזרה והמחטף בפגישה עם נציגי ההורים, 4 משפחות לפחות מתוך ה־5 עברו מאותו "פורום משפחות החטופים" ל"מטה משפחות החטופים" הגדול והמוכר יותר. ..\3

אז לא היה כאן הצהרה מאב מזויף, רק הייצוג שלו את המשפחות היה מזויף. ממשרד הביב יצאה הודעה שאין לו מושג מי זה היה ואין לו קשר אליו (כנראה שקר אבל מה זה כבר משנה).

אז מצג שווא היה, דחיפת מילים לפי משפחות הנעדרים\חטופים היתה, ונטישה שלהם מיידית את הארגון קקמייקא שכנראה לא ממש הסכימו שייצג אותם. שוב נסיון שקוף לישראבלוף ושכפו"ץ האגו של הדוצ'ה, על חשבון משפחות במצב נורא. אין סוף לציניות ולניצול.

@scunneen @Alon @jackharman not to mention a "traditional" aversion to hospitals for some very justified reasons. Are there statistics how many of those are maybe home births that should not have been and such? Also are those gaps happening on the coasts at the same ratios as in the bible belt? Still, yeah, it's sad indeed.

@Alon @scunneen @jackharman I don't know about the sociological circumstances, but there are affluent people having a home birth with a doula and there are poor people growing up told to avoid doctors and hospitals. the numbers alone don't tell the full story.

מזיז את הקו האדום שלי. עד עכשיו התווכחתי פה ושם עם אנשים שקראו לפעולות ישראל רצח עם. לשבת להתווכח עם מישהו שיש הבדל בין טיהור אתני ורצח עם זה חסר פואנטה, כי אני עצמי רק הפנמתי את הדקויות לא מזמן, ובכל מקרה שתי הגישות בזויות וחסרות מוסר ואנושיות, רק שאחת מהן עוד יותר גרועה מהשניה. אני לא מתווכח שאנחנו מדינה גזענית ולאומנית, זה נתון.

עדיין אתווכח עם מצדדי הטבח, למרות שישראל לא חפה מפשע בשום צורה מהתעללות בפלסטינים.

לא אטרח עם מכחישי הטבח והטוענים לזיוף סרטוני הרצח של חמאס עצמם כי הם מקרה אבוד.

מבין את הגישה, אבל יש גם את המחיר הבינלאומי שנשלם אחר כך, כבר רמזו לנו ש־6000 הפצצות של השבוע האחרון כבר נכנסו באופן ברור לתחום של פשעי מלחמה, וזה לפני שנדבר על סיפורים בשוליים על זרחן לבן, שאם זה אמיתי זה מחמיר בהרבה את הסיפור.

@EyalL אי אפשר לא להגיב ואי אפשר לשטח, אין לי מושג איך לעשות את זה כירורגי יותר ממה שאנחנו יכולים, אולי עם פצצות חכמות וחודרי בונקר מהאמריקנים. אני לא טקטיקן גדול אבל הייתי מבקש מהם אולי לשבת כיועצים בפגישות התכנון ולו בגלל שהקונצפציות שלנו שוות לתחת, אז במקרה הטוב יהיה לנו עוד רעיונות של מסתכלים מבחוץ, ובמקרה הרע שהואשם שבחרנו בשיטות פסולות, נוכל להגיד שהאמריקנים היו בלופ והם יעידו שלא היתה ברירה.

Dear literally everyone who just discovered Mizrahi Jews exist: former MK Ran Cohen (Meretz) clarified years ago, "We came to Israel because we were Zionist." There was a lot of ethnic cleansing involved in their aliyah, but it wasn't a one-time event in 1948-9, just rising levels of anti-Semitism in MENA from the 1930s to the 1960s, plus a preexisting Yemeni Jewish population from the 1910s (which the kibbutzniks treated horribly). It's not like the one-time event of the Nakba.

@Alon לא לגמרי מדויק. רוב היהודים הועלו ארצה בעל כורחם, בעיקר יהודי עיראק. המחשבה של בן גוריון היתה שאם אנחנו מושכים אלינו את היהודים, לא יהיה להם אכפת שנזרוק אליהם את הערבים, אבל אף אחד לא שאל את היהודים או את הערבים אם זה מתאים להם.
במצריים זה בכלל הסתבך עם "עסק הביש".

Hamas have its operatives clear instructions to murder as many civilians as possible. The operation's objectives were found on terrorists' bodies.

The IDF is telling the civilians to leave the area so it can dig out the bunkers under their neighborhoods to find the terrorists, weapons and hostages. The goal is clear, the warning released ahead of time, how is this a genocide?

Dear Israel: you will not restore your national honor by having more Palestinians than Israelis die. What's the war aim? If the war aim is "invade and reoccupy Gaza," then you need to be clear about it and not let the air force run the show. You need to be clear to Gazan civil society: Israel is coming to stay, so you should be on its good side and inform on the whereabouts of Hamas leadership. What you do now shows your war aim is "status quo ante, forever." That's untenable and you know it.
