FYI: "Toe the line"

The idiom is toe the line, not tow the line.

The phrase derives from track-and-field events in which athletes are required to place a foot on a starting line and wait for the signal to go. Race officials used to shout “Toe the line!” where now they shout “On your marks!”

Since entering the language, the idiom has developed to mean do what is expected or act according to someone else’s rules or expectations.

Why do pharmacies sell so many jellybeans? Prominently displayed?

While getting a blood test today in a nearby medical centre, I passed by the pharmacy and saw they had a dedicated table out the front of Glucojel jelly beans and bears. Inside there was another whole stand.

Do they serve some medical purpose?

ibk,
@ibk@aus.social avatar

@luciedigitalni @mativity The local pharmacy was a regular haunt when i was younger, because they could supply a whole bag of just black jellybeans (the only ones worth eating).
It was years before I realised there was a good medical reason for this.

Yaas, I found the drive belt for my lathe that I lost about a year ago, and had to order a new one from the UK. It was in the box of safety equipment (gloves and visors etc) in which I clearly never look. :sus:

A bit delayed today because of so many new donators.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate call for donors as their reserves of most blood types drop to critical levels.

@chestas @Fury There are lots of very valid reasons why some people can’t or don’t want to donate (for example my partner gets a bit woozy when we just talk about the procedure).
Luckily, I have no valid reasons!
It still hurts a bit every time, including the autolancet haemoglobin test. But against that: free snacks, and a good chance to properly listen to a fiction podcast.

Rockcliff is so fucked. He can't deal with the Greens and Lambie hates his guts. He's toast. Probably Abetz will take over and swing the party harder to the right, thus dooming any future electoral success.

ibk,
@ibk@aus.social avatar

@Ooze @TasDave It looks to me – but I do not have the patience to confirm – that preferences from excluded Liberals flowed less strongly to Abetz than others on that ticket. Certainly Petrusma overtook him fairly early. And similarly with Behrakis (who was being pursued by Ogilvie).
So, maybe, perhaps, possibly most Liberal voters aren’t really that keen on that wing, despite quite a few being very keen.
