@justinling Quick question... Roughly when were you at Vice? Wasn't sure if it was before or after your time doing OPPO at Canadaland (which you were great at). Only asking idly for context after listening to Shortcuts today (also well done).

I'm not convinced it was ever intended to be a serious company - just too far fetched. But I expect there may have been some grift involving tax incentives and environmental goodwill marketing.

I really don't know though.

RSS is underrated. Not sure why it fell out of favour. So many people complain about aggregator sites foisting their algorithmic content, but with RSS, you get the control back...

indigomirage,

I'm finding cases where it's not kept current. The Toronto Star, for example, has been complaining vociferously about the way Twitter and other sites are pilfering its content. Yet it won't post current RSS feeds that direct to its site!

    I just got the latest newsletter from Metrolinx wrt updates. Unfortunately, the content for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension was missing (only the title was there).
    Transparency.....?

    Metrolinx social media post, November 30:

    Today, at the public session of the Metrolinx Board of Directors meeting, CEO Phil Verster shared details around the status and progress of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project:

    “We will announce an opening date for the Eglinton Crosstown three months before opening day. We are not there yet. We are making sure everything is built right and operates correctly and safely.”

    A flight attendant told gospel singer Bobbi Storm she’d be removed if she wouldn’t stop singing/be quiet

    I’m gonna be a hater here and say tbh, good. She should not be allowed to sing. Flights/public transport should be quiet. Singing also expels more airborne disease into notoriously poorly ventilated planes.

    This woman is undeniably brilliant & talented, but the plane is not a place for a concert!

    - – Rubber Soul (1965). Moving toward their mature second phase, the Beatles shift gears between McCartneyesque love songs (the exuberant “Drive My Car” and Parisian “Michelle”) and Lennon’s weird tales (the surreal “Norwegian Wood,” the ominous “Girl,” and the disturbing “Run for Your Life”). George’s sitar and various keyboards broaden the Beatles soundscape as the album (rather than singles) becomes their primary medium of expression.

    - – Please Please Me (1963). Signed to Parlophone after years in the musical sticks, the Beatles stormed through 14 songs under the production oversight of George Martin on their first UK album. The frenetic energy of “I Saw Her Standing There,” “There’s a Place,” “Boys” and “Twist and Shout” didn’t so much revive rock and roll as reinvent it for the 1960s. And with ballads like “Anna” and “P.S. I Love You” the grownups liked it as well as the kids

    I could listen to I Saw Her Standing There and Twist and Shout on repeat for days.

    Listen to the way Ringo controls the intensity of the drums in ISHST. Most underrated drummer ever.

    And John's voice on Twist and Shout. He had the flu and knew he had only one take in him, so he went all out. It's glorious.

    - - Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967). Long reviled as a "failed" Sgt. Pepper (which it isn't, being much much weirder), this LP catches the Stones in a state of playful confusion. The blurry "Citadel" sounds like a template for 90s Britpop. Bill Wyman "sings" on the acid trippy "In Another Land." "She's a Rainbow" is the band's best baroque ballad, and "2000 Light Years From Home" rivals early Pink Floyd in the mindfuck space race of '67.

    indigomirage,
    @indigomirage@mstdn.social avatar

    @Great_Albums
    To be fair, Pink Floyd upped their game considerably as time marched on (even as lunacy was sidelined and replaced by festering egotism). And She's a Rainbow sold a lot of iMacs.

    (Also, see if you can find the hidden Beatles in the album art...!)

    One thing I’ll never understand is why the GOP rails against Biden for stopping loads of fentanyl from entering the country. Every time there’s a major bust, they treat it like it means things are going badly for the country—when in fact it means the precise opposite. They are stopping more of the bad guys. You just can’t win with the GOP spin.
