https://jacky.wtf/2024/2/G7It feels relevant again.

"Despite what the media industry has repeated on behalf of the government, national security does not mean the security of life and stability for those outside of the realm of the political industry, but more on the ability of a nation to maintain its ability to continue its behavior with no restraint."

Yes, I'm quoting myself (I'm tired of repeating it!)

Using Discord on a Debian machine outside of Flatpak makes me want to pull one of their release engineers to the side and tell them to stop.

jalcine,
@jalcine@todon.eu avatar

I'm half tempted to write a package that does the work similar to the Steam installer for Discord (has someone done this already?)

inb4 stop using Discord: I use it because there's activists groups who find these platforms usable and I don't have the spoons to suggest a mass migration to something like Mattermost.

Waking up to read the White House is deciding to ignore the statement of the young students protesting the government's need to feed genocide and for media outlets to call them "hate-filled foreign students" is the first loud bell of the covert fascist alignment domestically of the American project.

Biden's already opened claimed to be a Zionist so it shouldn't be too shocking but this is now a soft declaration of anti-dissent sentiment.

jalcine,
@jalcine@todon.eu avatar

In my opinion (and this is mainly tied to looking at past events from the 90s up to 2019), liberals are incapable of seeing any sort of covert or overt violence that their party leader executed as a bad thing. In fact, it's almost deemed as necessary.

NAFTA was good (and has been a huge contributing factor to the weakening of economic independence of the global South, like sending industrial jobs to Mexico, Brazil, and other places with incredibly weak labor laws and governments that will be violent to workers that stand up - while making our cars at a tenth of the pay of what an American worker would make).

Obama was an excellent president (and bombed parts of Africa and installed a paramilitary unit via AFRICOM to defend companies like General Electric and Microsoft from their unregulated and below the radar acts of resource extraction to feed and maintain the luxury lifestyles of the West - in relation to the rest of the world).

The violence that this country does over indexes towards non-white people. It even found a way to profit from it similar to the violence of its past with other forms of labor. And it's managed to indoctrinate so many people in defense with no space for critical thinking nor a venue for accountability.

@jalcine@todon.eu avatar

With all of this said, the neoliberalist ventures of America and its accompanying forces will be turned more aggressively inwards. All of the paperclip allies will move away from the violence or do their best to contort their ideologies to match what the State informs them to parrot.

@nicol @mekkaokereke

Agreed. I'm not going to assume the capacity of those there but in my experience organizing protests, this is where the Safety committee would come in to help redirect and have people exercise them.

I will also say by giving them air, enough air to become nearly synonymous with the actual protesters of the space, does work in the favor of counter-protests (and like you've mentioned with Zuccoti Park). It's not easy work.

I understand (been did) how people see it as a form of emancipatory journalism.

Hearing Shawn Fein mention the importance of literature that shaped his ability to organize and the role that faith in members and their capabilities touches home for me. Organizing people is about making their collective voices louder than their opposition. Organizing workers turns into making corporate (mis)management incapable of abusing their private governance and forces them to treat them as people.

If you haven't checked out yet, it's a scarily direct library one could integrate alongside your application to provide it with the ability to peer information across any stream you provide it (from my understanding!)

What interests me so much about it is that, if combined with something like https://yjs.dev , one could replicate things like Obsidian, calendaring and even make a transport layer for sending emails without having to solely rely on the conventional Internet.

You could bring your own CRDT implementation, like https://automerge.org/

Sydette Henry (AKA The Black Amazon).

I'm not going to be able to do her justice here. An unwavering beacon in how online civil spaces can look like for ALL people (because of her focus on keeping online spaces safe for BIPOC trickles up), she needs help raising money. I've thrown in and I'm willing to match up another $200 for any other contributions folks can make.

Day one of was wild.

In front of the hotel, workers gathered to block traffic to protest for a permanent ceasefire and a free Palestine.

Officers were already surrounding us and guided traffic away, attempting to neuter the effect of the protest.

In the video here, police executed their remarkable ability to communicate with fellow human beings by flinging their bodies in a manner that increased the chances of harming them and went as far as to take another party into a separate facility nearby (not shown here).

A video of two police officers of Rosemont, Chicago using excessive force to forcibly detain two attendees of Labor Notes who were protesting. Most notably, an officer flings a person over to the ground with the crowd demanding de-escalating.

@jalcine@todon.eu avatar

Learned so much from flight attendants, railroad workers, plumbers, auto workers, writers, engineers of all kinds, teachers, nurses, lawyers and a plethora of other fields that were all involved and represented in this protest.

I'm understanding that more that labor will be a critical level in revolution but it's nothing more than that and can only assist in the general transition.

You can donate at https://venmo.com/u/CfaWorkersSolidarity. The goal is to raise around $10,000 to help laid off workers who are STILL looking for work to stay afloat.

Talking to my elders young and old reminds me of how successful social repression is.

It explains the possibility of why so many Black people voted for Adams (OUTSIDE of identity politics, we are constantly told that police are necessary for safety - all the while fearing their presence).

This fear is taught early and experienced that way too. It turns into them passing that onto the youth - reminding us that we have to treat the police like family that can kill you. Be nice to them - super nice - and always obey.

This culture of fear is extremely useful for white supremacy. Keeping their internal colony depressed like this, removing media to highlight their strength, reducing venues for conversations like around understanding why cops can do what they do and so much more.

The number of children displaced in Sudan exceeds the number of people living in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn has about 3 million people.
