This morning, talking about recipes, I said off-handedly, "there must be a bunch of open source recipe management web apps available."

Yes. Yes, there are.

And then there are some that call themselves open source but then seem not to be. Unfortunately, this includes two that look like the best choices for me to host for my family.

Tandoor publishes that it is Open Source under AGPLv3. That's fine. But then, using a license that explicitly says no further restrictions, they try to apply Heather Meeker's malformed "commons clause" to add further restrictions anyway, because they want an exclusive right to revenue. And they also won't sell their service outside Germany. 🤦

OK, then there is RecipeSage. Built by a Mozilla staff SWE, so of course he understands Open Source licensing. Hmm, "For all non-commercial usage, RecipeSage is available for use under the terms of the AGPL-3.0 license. For all commercial usage, RecipeSage is only available for licensing upon request." That's even more confusing. No explicit attempt to withhold specific rights, but what exactly does he mean by "non-commercial" there?

I'm not one of those people who believes that all software must, morally, be open source. I've written both open source and proprietary software. I'll probably end up rolling my eyes at the licensing confusion and deploying one of them.

But they both muddy the licensing waters. ☹

jeffeb3,

@mcdanlj I have been keeping my recipes in a spreadsheet (google docs). I like that I can easily multiply all the ingredients by a factor to make more or less.

I remember about 15 years ago a dev told me that the only thing limiting his productivity was that he couldn't type faster. I have never met someone who knows exactly what code they need to type at every second, and I met some amazing devs.

jeffeb3,

@afilina were they coding in assembly? It can take a while to sort a list.

Re: RHEL CentOS git changes. They now make it clear their recent changes were to stop others repackaging into other distributions.

I do get what they’re trying to say. Simply allowing others super easy access to repack doesn’t make business sense for them.

However those two paragraph’s don’t help how they look and directly contradict each other….

Literally goes from ”Don’t build from us you freeloaders” To “Building from others is what open source is all about”.

    https://www.redhat.com/en/blog/red-hats-commitment-open-source-response-gitcentosorg-changes

    jeffeb3,

@gamingonlinux We paid for RHEL simply because we needed something we could buy. The corporation I worked for couldn't agree to any terms unless they bought something. The repos were not the key feature.

It's interesting reading comments of the Hyundai brake light issue.

A lot of people seem to think "this isn't a big deal" but, once again, their reason is that "you should just be paying attention"

Why is it so damn hard to get people to realize that OTHER DRIVERS ARE NOT YOU and that YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW WELL THEY MIGHT BE PAYING ATTENTION?

    jeffeb3,

@TechConnectify I posted to a neighborhood forum about using turn signals in our new round abouts. There was a lot of support for the counter argument, "Don't trust turn signals". Which I just don't understand. Especially in the round about scenario, where turn signals are an active communication.

Why is pace displayed like 4'20" instead of 4:20? Isn't it a measure of time per distance?

    jeffeb3,

    @rasterweb playing devil's advocate:

If you see 4:20. It is not clear if that means 4mins 20sec or 4hours 20mins.

I'm not sure the ticks are much better. Would it have to be written as 4h20'00"?

Pace probably isn't going to be confused though. If you saw: 1:25, would you know which units?

Another reason is that it immediately looks different than 4:20 the time of day. When you are running and clicking through screens, it is obvious which display you are using.

A pre-order of the K1 Max 3D was looking like an interesting idea, but then I read this and came away sad... ☹

    jeffeb3,

@mcdanlj creality has done that several times. It is surprising they haven't learned their lesson. AFAIK, they eventually released all the source code. But it is wrong to even do it late.

    jeffeb3,

@linux_mclinuxface @mcdanlj I'll be very interested in reading your words when you want to release them. I was pretty unhappy while watching Tom.

    jeffeb3,

    @linux_mclinuxface @mcdanlj
There is also so much to learn when you are starting with 3D printing. If you are trying to get your daughter more into STEAM, and you are already worried about your success rate, then FOSS becomes a low priority.

FOSS needs to have a numerical benefit for the end user, at the end of the day. I think it does. But not immediately. So that makes it a difficult thing to gamble on.

    jeffeb3,

    @linux_mclinuxface @mcdanlj

I have a kid headed off to college who wants a @frameworkcomputer DIY 13" system to run @fedora on while studying CS. ❤️

What are the tradeoffs between the Intel and AMD variants, specifically for running Linux, specifically the next-generation systems (13th Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) currently available for pre-order?

    • Webcam? (I don't know whether Frame.work are using Intel's proprietary, closed-source, non-upstreamed webcam implementation on their Alder/Raptor Lake systems.)
    • Battery life?
    • Performance?
    • Other technical considerations?

JTBC I'm not looking for anti-Intel or anti-AMD comments, just technical information, with a focus on good support from a fully open source install.

    #framework #fedora

    jeffeb3,

@mcdanlj @frameworkcomputer @fedora IDK all the details, but I know there was some trouble with the 13th gen intel getting full benefits until we used kennel 5.19+. This was ubuntu and 5.19 isn't that be anymore (22.04). So it is probably fine.

Here we go again 😅 England and US say it differently. Plz learn there’s differences between US English and British English. Thanks 😘

    jeffeb3,

@gamingonlinux @edraac FWIW, I had trouble parsing it. I thought you might have been going all, "It's the King's English" on us.

But it matters less than the original complaint. We are now on an "actually" on an "actually" on an "actually". Way too deep.

I'd love to find a simple/cheap way to have one Arduino send data to multiple computers. (USB/USB MIDI though, not serial data.) I'm not even sure it's possible...

    jeffeb3,

@rasterweb @k1m I hope you post about it. I have questions. Like what kind of data and what latency you can tolerate. My first idea was an esp32 sending the data wirelessly. Esp32 can handle several uarts and publish data to mqtt or just stream it on a port.

Spi or i2c seems reasonable too, but I don't know those tools as well.

    jeffeb3,

@rasterweb @k1m Oh, I see. And the computers have to think both devices are usb midi or something.
