Heading to town to get an evil corporate Dragonfruit/Lemonade Fresher (blended) with the last of a gift card, then to Food Lion for coffee and $1.98/lb boneless-skinless chicken breasts. California peaches are 98¢/lb. I'll sniff a couple peach bottoms (the pointed end), and if they smell like peaches, and aren't rock hard, I'll buy some.

Maybe there will be some pictures that need taking. I have chicken breasts already thawed that must be grilled when I get back.

Later...

Saw this wild scene go down today and I wanted to share it with y’all. I was hanging out on 29th street when this self-driving car came to a stop in a nearby lane. I’m not sure if it was stuck or waiting for a pickup, but it sure was absolutely blocking traffic. After five minutes, a cyclist came by and yelled at the car to move. When it didn’t, he pulled out this “No Techno Fascists” sticker and slapped it on the window.

A self driving car blocking westbound traffic on 29th St. It’s a two lane road, so the cars behind the Waymo have to wait for the oncoming traffic to go away before they can pass it safely.

jennyzilliac,

@docpop

I see you all begging me for my opinion, so here it is!

There are so many social problems woven into this scene:

  1. A large segment of our society has become programmed to get bent out of shape by traffic inconveniences. Really, is a bit of traffic inconvenience worth emotional disregulation?

  2. A large segment of our society has little patience for the process of developing new ideas and harshly criticizes the early messes that are part of innovation.

  3. A large segment of the population tends to default to uncharitable assumptions about the people with whom we find ourselves in disagreement. For example, yelling "Why do you hate innovation?" (or whatever he said).

  4. Too many of us are ready to hate the many people we think we disagree with.

Solutions:

  1. Practice mindfulness as a way to keep life in perspective.

  2. Get to know more people, accepting that you will have some different values which will lead to different opinions, and be okay with that.

jennyzilliac,

@robhon @docpop

I agree that cars with human drivers do this all the time. And some people lose their cool over that, too. And it can be seen as inconsiderate to block traffic while dropping off a loved one, for example. But it can also be seen as inconsiderate to not be gracious about the fact that someone has to drop off a loved one and doesn't have any great options. Just chill, right? Even if you're in a hurry.

This is where mindfulness comes in.

This is interesting. My brother, now 63, was never diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I don't remember people talking about autism when we were kids, and getting our psychological needs met wasn't really a thing in our family when we were growing up, although we all really needed that kind of help. "Depression" was our go-to diagnosis, for all of us.

After watching Love on the Spectrum, seeing the wide variety of characteristics of young adults on the spectrum, I felt I had an epiphany about my brother.

We were recently cleaning out a family vacation home to put it on the market, and I was in awe of the survival resources my brother had stashed there. Huge bags of rice. Also beans. Also dried chilies. An expensive generator. Diabetes syringes were stashed in every nook and cranny. All manner of battery chargers. A case of isopropyl alcohol. I could go on and on.

So my theory still may be sound, I'm guessing.

Love that guy. My brudder.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the shouted question, "Why are so many people living paycheck to paycheck?" It appears to place blame on a single individual for a complex, age-old problem.

It might be a fun to construct a pithy answer that informs the populace.

How about a one-word answer:

Hi, Jenny. You responded to a post today with kind words, and I didn't reply. I don't like writing more than a sentence or two on the phone app and my response would have been. In any case, thank you. I saw your comment and appreciate it. x

I support you in doing what works for you!! I'm wishing you well.

But I'm still curious about the tomato sandwich. Mayonnaise? Yes or no.

jennyzilliac,

@DemocracySpot

I wouldn't go for the white bread either, but the tomato, mayonnaise, salt & pepper sound delicious.

Please excuse what must have seemed like an obvious question. I'm a Cali-for-nian. We would be more likely to have a veggie sandwich, with tomato, avocado, cucumber, lettuce and maybe some onion sprouts on whole grain bread. Oh. And mayonnaise. And maybe a nice slice of jack cheese. Okay, and some salt & pepper. Sounds delicious. Wow.

    Very much appreciate your thinking here. It'll help me stay chill about outcomes.

    | If you read my posts Wednesday about my "incident" with Nephew who's Q...

    I sent him a text with this picture of his GUS saying I thought our relationship was more important than whatever we might believe, politics and that, and could we please just find a way around those conversations.

    Him: "I was thinking the same thing. Love you! GUS!"

    This was a major contributor to my funk. I have only a few people IRL and he's one, an important one. It felt like a death when doors slammed.

    jennyzilliac,

    Oh, wow. I know what you mean. Yesterday evening, a friend was in a funk about a strained family relationship. I told her that I call it being "out of relationship" when I have a disagreement with one of my daughters, and it literally (and I do mean literally) feels like the end of my world. Devastating. It's hard to think about anything else.

    """"
    Cobb County, with 106,000 students, said Tuesday that 20 libraries had contained “Flamer” by Mike Curato or “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” by Jesse Andrews, or both. “Flamer” is a graphic novel about a boy who is discovering he is gay and how he is treated at summer camp. “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” contains some discussion of sex and a lot of profanity, but is mainly about two high school boys who befriend a girl dying of cancer. Both were among the most challenged books of 2022, according to a list published by the American Library Association.

    One of the most important jobs of public schools is to teach children how to protect our democracy from religious zealots and fascists and others who use well known strategies to threaten all that is truly good in life, like love and compassion. And that's why these authoritarian types work overtime to dismantle public education.

    It occurred to me today that the social value of the open-source work I do in my free time has probably been an order of magnitude more useful to the world than everything I've ever done as a paid employee. Needing to seek a wage almost certainly makes me a less productive member of society than I would otherwise be.

    jennyzilliac,

    @jsbarretto @alcinnz

    As a retired technical writer, I think of how short-lived the usefulness of my work was. It no longer has any value at all.

    The community building work I am doing now without a paycheck, though, can potentially stay useful well beyond my lifetime because of the ripple effect of building supportive relationships.

    Reminder if Trump is convicted of the RICO act it carries a min 5 year sentence and Fani Willis made it clear that not all 5 years will be probation. This is the case that will break the spell over the MAGA movement since this indictment tells the story of what Trump and his allies did why and who they are.

    jennyzilliac,

    @cynblogger @alfredo_liberal

    I agree. The lesson we MUST take away from the Trump era is that we need to educate ourselves about every race and vote in every election. Because any assumptions we make about "two sides" and "essential goodness" are flawed. One third of people are highly susceptible to "win at all costs" thinking, and we need to outvote these people every time.
