#writersCoffeeClub 4/24: When older novels use outdated or racist language, should they be edited for the modern world or left alone and viewed in context?
They shouldn't be edited, BUT I'm all in favour of adding a content warning up front and then footnotes/an afterword explaining how attitudes and/or usage have changed since the text was written, and explaining it in context. Especially if the book is being directed at younger readers or the education sector.
I was visiting my father yesterday and he was watching #foxnews Since I detest that station I turned on Pandora on my phone, put the speaker next to my ear and listened to music. Suddenly my Dad changed the channel to the History Channel and my Dad started talking about Swamp People. I stoped listening to my music and I had a nice visit with my father. Now I know how to get him to switch off Fox News when I’m around
@cdarwin my mother’s oldest brother died of polio as a toddler in the 1920’s. His parents held him in their arms while he gasped for breath then died. Apparently, the #republicans have decided to bring that back. They’re mentally ill and they’re going to condemn a lot of people to a horrifying death. It’s time to vote out all #gop representatives
So I think the reason crime is not eradicated in NYC is because wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few people, and those who have that money enjoy their leisure time.
So when people who don't have jobs are wandering around, it becomes unsafe.
@GreenFire@kotaro a rule of mine is, if @FoxNews claims something as fact I automatically assume it’s a lie. I’ve caught them in so many lies that I now assume they’re just a propaganda station and nothing more
@kotaro@GreenFire@FoxNews they’re the tool of the mega wealthy. The greed of the wealthy has gotten out of hand and they’re still not satisfied. They want to use infrastructure in this country but don’t want to help pay for it. They want to eliminate public schools to dumb down the population and make them malleable. They want a dictatorship they can control
