@evan I hope the next poll is "Which CC license do you typically use?" because that's something I spend a lot of time thinking about.

"ActivityPub servers should use IPFS as storage for public binary files like images, video, and audio."

jszym,
@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

@evan It would be interested if, for example, every Mastodon server was an IPFS end-point, but that raises the question of who would be responsible for pinning the content, moderation, etc...

As interesting as it is, I'm generally skeptical on the utility/practicality of IPFS.

My current workflow includes using a Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running Office and , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.

The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.

jszym,
@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

@mpjgregoire LibreOffice is 99.99% of the way there on compatibility for my purposes. The track changes, citations, and layout are totally cross-compatible, but equations have been getting mangled between the two.

I thought I heard that OneDrive for linux was mothballed a while ago, but I'll give it a second look! I'd have to keep the VM for other things, but it'd still help.

As closing arguments of the Google Search trial proceed, there are two things I would like to flag.

First, the way in which search works on the web is stuck in the 90s. We need not stay there and can imagine alternatives (that aren't crappy AI): https://berjon.com/fixing-search/.

jszym,
@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

@robin Again, thanks for the super insightful article, it's made me think about this problem in a new light!

jszym,
@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

@robin Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the article, and think your outlining of how the dynamic has shifted between content production and search providers was succinct and super insightful!

I'm not entirely sure if I agree that engines providing APIs are big part of the solution. Brave, Bing, Mojeek, etc.. all have search APIs and I don't think integrating them in the browser would greatly change the dynamic you describe (and if it did, I suspect APIs would suddenly be turned off).

It's easy to dismiss an article in the critical of a budget. But it's worth paying attention to what has to say...

@mpjgregoire It's all a matter of perspective, and no one entity is always consistent in their view point, but the C.D. Howe institute has certainly been described as conservative[0], if not sometimes right-wing[1] depending on the source.

The Fraser institute itself has been described as a right-wing[0] or libertarian[2] think tank. It also has a streak of climate-denialism[3].

@mpjgregoire There is an alternative to lower spending, and that is raising taxes as you mentioned. One of the ten points in the scheme rebuffs "populist" taxation, which seems to make their stance pretty clear: the reasonable way to raise funds to is shrink government and lower taxes. I'm not making a value judgement, just stating that it sounds pretty conservative.

What the Victoria Bridge in looked like in 1859 vs. 2009. Turns out the bridge was once a tubular bridge made of prefabbed iron sections built in the UK.

Elections Quebec is scrapping it's pilot programme for online municipal elections.

I haven't a clue the number of times experts like @mattblaze need to outline the dangers and risks of internet-based elections before policy makers get the message.

I'm happy they came to the right conclusion, but it beggars belief how they ever thought it was viable.

Planning a study that would involve collecting and transferring large amounts of data (100-500 GB). I know, for some this is peanuts! (:

Does anyone have any suggestions better/cheaper than WeTransfer to transfer data?

Everything on the wiki looks insanely cool, and there is a lot of documentation, but am I the only one who hasn't a clue how to adopt 99% of what is on there?

and might be hard for folks to grok at first, but the on-ramp for for me looks like the Cliff's of Dover.

That said, I am acknowledging that plenty of folks are using IndieWeb to make truly insane things. I just want in! :P

The new @notjustbikes video on is very fair and pretty comprehensive, but despite that I have to say as a Montrealer I don't really come away with all the same conclusions.

All the facts are right, but then dubbing it "most disappointing city" and "not a great" city are pretty heartbreaking, and IMHO pretty unfair characterisations of the city.

What I see when I look at the video is the incredible speed with which Montreal is changing for the better.

I think the most unexpected thing I've learned from studying networks of protein-interactions is something called the Friendship Paradox

The major implication is that, on average, your friends are more popular than you. They also, on avg, have had more sexual partners.

If you're starting to feel personally attacked, don't worry, it's just a case of sampling bias and high-degree networks. There's a bunch of math that can explain this but it's also intuitive imho [1/2]
