@RickiTarr I know little about the second image, but it depicts the same picture as here https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Print-Commander-in-Chief-Aide-de-Camp-Line-Officers-1779-1783-by-Ogden-/321632469008?_ul=DO (and I think it is George Washington on the horse).

@RickiTarr you're welcome, glad to help.
I had previously seen this one as part of a "George Washington does things" meme thread that was doing rounds in Tumblr some time ago, the commander-in-chief was always saying something to/about his wife Martha in comic sans, mostly acting like an absent father and/or a not-really-there husban.

The laughable assertion from the Tories that "Britain is the Second Most Powerful Country in the World," (backed up by an article in the Daily Express, FFS) reminds me of this from Professor Nicholas Boyle, University of Cambridge. https://archive.is/6NC4N

@alanferrier 1 of 2
The English have been unable to recognise how much of their society and its norms was constructed during the imperial period and in order to sustain empire, and have therefore been unable to mourn the empire's passing or to escape from the compulsion to recreate it. Over three centuries the needs of empire shaped England's systems of government, national and local, its Church, its schools and universities, the traditions of its armed and police forces, its youth movements, its sports, its BBC, its literature, and its cuisine.
The end of empire meant the end of all this. And because England has been unable to acknowledge that loss, it has also been unable to acknowledge the end of English exceptionalism, the end of the characterlessness the English had enjoyed as rulers of the world - with no need of distinct features to mark them off from their equals since they had no equals, embodying, as they did, the decency, reasonableness and good sense by which they assumed the rest of the world privately measured its lesser achievements and to which they assumed it aspired. The trauma of lost exceptionalism, the psychic legacy of empire, haunts the English to the present day, in the illusion that their country needs to find itself a global role.

jt_rebelo,
@jt_rebelo@ciberlandia.pt avatar

@alanferrier 2 of 2
Of course it IS an illusion: do roughly comparable countries such as Germany or Italy or Japan have such a need? The psychosis, the willed triumph of illusion over reality revealed by the [Brexit] referendum result, is most damagingly still at work in the determination of the English to cling on to their old exceptional status as anonymous masters of the United Kingdom and of the other nations with which they have to share the Atlantic Archipelago.
For the English, the United Kingdom occupies the psychic space once filled by the empire: it is the last guarantor of their characterlessness, it is the phantom which in the English mind substitutes for the England which the English will not acknowledge is their only home. They will not acknowledge it lest they become just another nation like everybody else, with a specific, limited identity, a specific history, neither specially honourable nor specially dishonourable, with limited weight, limited resources, and limited importance in the world now that their empire is no more.

What kind of entertainment are "Let's Play" series?

It's a bit like a reality show, a bit like a how to program, a bit like a role playing game.

Role Playing games are under-appreciated as art forms because they can't be easily mass distributed. I call them "collaborative story telling"

The "Let's Play" is even more alien to the people who study great literature and movies.

But they still should be engaged with as art, analyzed like art, valued like art. (preserved for history like art)

jt_rebelo,
@jt_rebelo@ciberlandia.pt avatar

@futurebird they also democratise access to a costly medium of entertainment. I don't have a PlayStation and I've seen many Sony's console exclusives being played, or games of consoles I own but that I don't have the money to pay for/wouldn't experience for the price they're sold at.

Reddit's business plan involves selling the very words -- the conversations -- that unpaid subreddit managers and users pour into the site. Who's buying? The big "AI" companies.

The ugliest part of this exploitive plan is that it might work, at least until the current AI bubble implodes.

@dangillmor I overwrote all my posts with impossible to understand gibberish, but seemingly normal wording, before deleting my account. I know they can restore/use the previous version of the posts, but if everyone did that, how could they keep it profitable?

    Still thinking about the concept of studying ant communication by getting down to ant level. Make a tiny robot (we don't know how to make walking robots that small, so wheels it is) the robot would have a camera, little pads to collect pheromones (which could be dropped off to be analyzed) antennae IR sensors and maybe a way to stridulate?

    Then one could really find out what's going on in there.

    Worst case you have made an immersive ant VR experience!

    "For its part, ICBC has told users that its US division is back online and operational, the people said. One person familiar with the hack and investigation said a reason the bank could get back online quickly was that a key part of its
    trading system was unaffected by the attack - a server that was more than 20 years old, made by now-defunct IT equipment maker Novell Inc.
    That server contained much of the bank's trading data and capabilities and is so old that LockBit's ransomware didn't work on it, the person said."
