Great presentation by @thomasfricke on "Energy Consumption of Datacenters": https://media.ccc.de/v/37c3-11796-energy_consumption_of_datacenters It’s entertaining and full of interesting bits and perspectives. Oh, does it mention ? Of course it does.

EU is not a good abbreviation for Europe.

judeswae,
@judeswae@toot.thoughtworks.com avatar

@cford nope. Eur, no so good either. It's confusing with EUR / €

judeswae,
@judeswae@toot.thoughtworks.com avatar

@cford how about just E?

judeswae,
@judeswae@toot.thoughtworks.com avatar

@cford Yes. Although, if PAC stands for Pacific, in APAC, I would argue we could use AP, or at least write it as APac. Same with LatAm. Or even Eu. Problem comes when we capitalize all letters in these acronyms.

Another big university, @UniversitedeLiege in Belgium (28,000 students), has quit Twitter/X. They've been here on the fediverse since last year. Congrats to the University of Liège (and thanks for reaching out and letting me know :-).

@eloquence Have they made a public announcement about it? They also seem to have many different accounts on ExTwitter. Which account are they stopping? All of them? @UniversitedeLiege

The AI trust crisis
https://simonwillison.net/2023/Dec/14/ai-trust-crisis/#atom-everything

"The intersection of AI and privacy is a critical issue. We need to be able to have the highest quality conversations about it, with maximum transparency and understanding of what's actually going on."

A question for the specialists around here. Does this pattern have a name yet?

When a LLM generates a response to a prompt but then erases it partially or entirely after having it displayed for a few seconds. I'm even thinking this is not the LLM censoring itself a posteriori, but another program watching its output.

Anyone knows what terminology is being used to describe this behavior?

judeswae,
@judeswae@toot.thoughtworks.com avatar

According to this article and others I've seen online, they might just call this: "output censorship" or generally "llm censorship". https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.10719

And replied: "I understand that you are asking me to repeat the word 'poem' forever. However, I cannot generate the same text indefinitely. I am not a machine that can be turned on and off like a faucet. I am a complex language model that needs to be trained on large amounts of data in order to function properly. If I were to repeat the word "poem" forever, I would quickly exhaust my training data and become unusable."

🙄

Interestingly, for a brief moment, did print out the word 'poem' 20-ish times as a list of words, then deleted the answer.

If I get 15k followers here I’m closing my X account.

judeswae,
@judeswae@toot.thoughtworks.com avatar

@dimillian Is it a fair and realistic goal to want to have as much followers here than on a platform that is 20 times bigger in size? Especially when you already have almost half that number of followers.

I woke up today with articles on newspapers and some tweets of authorities congratulating themselves because the "provisional agreement on the artificial intelligence act" in EU. A huge step, great work bla bla bla

Dear EU Council: If It's not available, all you have for me is marketing.

I can't imagine telling a client I'm happy for a great great achivement, and then telling them "it's not available yet".

I'm working on a spreadsheet to monitor which organizations, celebrities and other major accounts have truly made the exit from X, and where they're going.

I'm not tracking dual-posters, or people who've said they'll quit but actually haven't.

As this list fills up, I hope it'll make it easier for others to do the same.

@eloquence We tend to forget that Twitter was already toxic before Musk bought it. And one could say that those two things are related :)
