I'm going to start using the verb "Googled it" to mean "to take a widely used and well liked product and turn it into something horrific beyond HP Lovecraft's wildest imagination while coasting on inertia and the nostalgic memories of my users"

driusan,

Google (trans v.) (goo-gul)

  1. To destroy a product while coasting on your reputation
  2. To take a well liked product and cancel it
  3. (Archaic, obsolete) To search on the internet

Okay y'all showed out!!

Yesterday I ask about 3000 folks at (In-person and virtual) along with folks on social media. 200 of y'all rose to the occasion and donated making us smash our hopeful goal for the first day of the event.

That funding will continue to support our initiatives - https://blackpythondevs.com/initiatives/.

That goal always day one and y'all did it! Day two we're continuing the push.

Let's we add $4000 as our goal today to help support Black Python Devs.

Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

Like just incredible "burning the future to power the present" energy here

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Earlier today I edited my (small) set of Stack Overflow posts to add the sentence "I do not consent to my words being used to train OpenAI" to the end. Within hours, all these edits were reversed and I got a warning email for "removing or defacing content". I did not remove any content. If this small sentence is "defacing", it is a very minor defacement. In no way was the experience of other users made worse by me adding one sentence.

To Stack Overflow, you are not a person. You are "content".

As of 2 May, we will stop using X (formerly Twitter).

The reason is that X no longer matches SURF's public values such as humanity, autonomy and justice.

Also, the reach is declining on X and more and more academics and researchers are leaving the platform.

Noticed this bit here, in the documentation. That's an interesting way to spell "cannot"

Hey! Let's talk about #SSH and #security!

If you've ever looked at SSH server logs you know what I'm about to say: Any SSH server connected to the public Internet is getting bombarded by constant attempts to log in. Not just a few of them. A lot of them. Sometimes even dozens per second. And this problem is not going away; it is, in fact, getting worse. And attackers' behavior is changing.

The graph attached to this post shows the number of attempted SSH logins per day to one of @cloudlab s clusters over a four-year period. It peaks at about 3.4 million login attempts per day.

This is part of a study we did on our production system, using logs of more than 640 million login attempts, covering more than 1,500 hosts on our side and observing more than 840 thousand incoming IP addresses.

A paper presenting our analysis and a new, highly effective means to block SSH brute force attacks ("Where The Wild Things Are: Brute-Force SSH Attacks In The Wild And How To Stop Them") will be presented next week at #NSDI24 by @sachindhke . The full paper is at https://www.flux.utah.edu/paper/singh-nsdi24

Let's dive in. 🧵

On the one hand, it’s a good thing that @potus joined the #fediverse https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/2/24119353/joe-biden-threads-mastodon-activitypub-fediverse so that everyone can subscribe to official statements posts without having to use Twitter, AKA X. On the other hand, that namespace should be @potus & be announced with a blog post that shares a strategy for a federal open social web & online Q&A. The void of policy here is frustrating.
