If you live in a big city with small apartments and busy professionals there is a service you could offer that would get a lot of takers:

Person who comes and picks up items that could be donated, sold, gifted to the right person and who dispatches at least 2/3rd of what they pick up to anything that isn't a landfill.

You could charge for this service, even though you'd recover some value from the items.

Institutions would hire too.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@futurebird
This service would be completely overrun by people trying to just take and sell the items.

We use ebay classifieds for this in Germany. You almost never get a person to pick it up without them being kind of obviously in it for a profit.

I don't mind this. :) This is literally recirculation into the market.

What I do mind is if the person dumps the unsellable (but still good) stuff at the bus stop outside your apartment, often damaging it, and makes off with the more valuables.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@IngaLovinde @futurebird Oh if you sell then you get mostly private buyers. There's usually not enough of a margin for a commercial reseller to operate.

I mean when you put stuff up for FREE.

Then the majority for certain items, e.g. old computer parts or appliances, is people who specialize in collection and resale. They will also often ask if you have anything else. They don't care what, just to make their trips worth it.

Again, the practice is fine.

Just don't throw my good stuff away :(

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@IngaLovinde @futurebird I use Kleinanzeigen in lieu of donating to goodwill, because there are very few places that can accept random donations of "stuff", regardless of what it is. (let's assume all on good condition - it's as much about helping someone else out as it is about reducing waste)

(specific stuff such as books, board games or entire computers I donate to specific recipients whom I seek out myself)

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@IngaLovinde @futurebird that said, anyone want two 27" monitors (AdobeRGB capable, just a bit old), and can pick them up in northern Berlin for free... hmu :)

Spending Saturday night with Akshat Rathi’s Climate Capitalism.

It’s well written and researched. I’m starting to think maybe it’s possible for capitalism to solve climate change.

Fun fact: China used as much concrete between 2011 and 2013 as the US did in the 20th century.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@davidho
I think the statement is inflammatory and reductionist. It needs context.

How much of its concrete did the US use in the last decade? I think it's also compressed towards the end of that period.

Then, compress by a factor of 3.

Then, correct by types of concrete, some use more, some use less cement.

jupiter,

@futurebird @DanielSolis

You cannot, because each input is independent from the preceding input, even though often they are semantically connected.

Assuming the final word is FIRES, then WWGGG might be MORES, but WYWGW could be anything with an E at index 3.

Steps 1 2 and 3 are often arbitrary stabs. It's a good strategy for a really poor first or second matches to try a word with 5 completely different letters.

If I type BADLY and get WWWWW, I would not type "SADLY" or even "BADGE".

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@futurebird @DanielSolis

You can come up with a legal game, but it will usually be one of many, and you have no good way (other than, perhaps, probabilistics) to determine how confident you are that this reconstruction is actually the exact game, as played.

If you don't know the final word, there's basically any possible permutations of 5 (loosely coupled) letter patterns available for each row/step, and they would still be legal.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@futurebird @DanielSolis
It would be interesting to see how many reconstructions certain degenerate games could have, given you have access to the full word list:

WGGGG
WGGGG
WGGGG
WGGGG
GGGGG

At first glance it only has a few (if any, or one) legal games total, but it is not obvious at all!

WIRES
SIRES
TIRES
MIRES
FIRES

However, each step other than #5 would still be interchangeable with any other step, plus any words that also match, like HIRES, VIRES, CIRES, LIRES, ...(so many)

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar
jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@futurebird @DanielSolis

If there are no possible games without repeats, e.g. when solving for "black" with the steps "WGGGG", "WGGGG", "WGGGG", "WGGGG", "GGGGG", the program will count 0 smart games but still list the # of legal games.

Again, the example from @futurebird 's challenge will give astronomical possible game counts. Again with no possible word even seen pickable twice.

There's a strategy optimization avoiding picking LETTERS twice, but this is quite superhuman & speculative.

[loaded 14855 Words playing game with winning word 'black' and steps ['WWWWW', 'WWWYY', 'WWYYW', 'WYWGW', 'WWGGG', 'GGGGG'] 1 https://cdn.masto.host/mastodongamedevplace/media_attachments/files/110/996/267/367/267/021/original/4b8b247bdfde7b94.pngere', 'deers', 'de 2 https://cdn.masto.host/mastodongamedevplace/media_attachments/files/110/996/267/367/267/021/original/4b8b247bdfde7b94.png, 'dotal', 'doula' 3 WWYYW 366 sensible candidates out of 366 with 366 unique out of 366 ['debag', 'debar', 'debby', 'decad', 'decaf', 'decan', 'decay', 'decko' 4 WYWGW 45 sensible candidates out of 45 with 45 unique out of 45 ['dance', 'dancy', 'darcy', 'daych', 'fancy', 'farce', 'farci', 'farcy', 'f 5 WWGGG 13 sensible candidates out of 13 with 13 unique out of 13 'drack', 'frack', 'quack', 'shack', 'smack', 'snack', 'spack', 'stack', 's 6 GGGGG black legal games: 160,719,530,400 non-stupid games: 160,719,530,400

New image of Supernova 1987A remnant from the JWST.

SN 1987A, whose explosion was observed in 1987 (it exploded 160K years ago), is one of the most studied objects.

Besides the dust-filled central structure, the bright beaded ring and 2 faint outer rings, the new image shows 2 faint crescents near the center.

The beaded ring is formed from the SN shockwave hitting material ejected ~20,000 years ago by the progenitor star.

Let's explore SN 1987A.
