@cliffwade I have a USB BluRa/DVD-RW drice I connect for the very rare occasions when I need to read one. I never had to write one. Last DVD I wrote was probably 20 years ago.

I read, maybe once a year, medical data, some obscure driver, photo CDs, and/or a movie.

Does anyone know what it means if I hit the audio mute button on my keyboard and the mac does not change the audio volume but instead just shows this huge icon?

I am using HDMI (and headphones plugged into my HDMI monitor) for audio

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mcc it means the HDMI device isn't capable of doing audio.

You can change the output device in sound settings.

@emilymbender I get really annoyed at the AI hype, as someone who was in university during the deep AI winter.

It's not about AGI. Anyone claiming this is delusional. This is an evolution of search and generation, and as such, it has real application.

LLMs and Diffusion models are tremendously useful, valuable tools.

Question to people among you who can actually see colour with some kind of accuracy, and might even be getting paid for it...

Is "sRGB" even a positive thing these days? And is colour grading for sRGB pointless, and I should be using something else?

What exactly? Display P3? AdobeRGB? Some HDR thing (does that even exist in this context?)

I mean sRGB doesn't melt my eyeballs like my Monitor's "Vivid" or "Gamer" settings, but... I feel my AdobeRGB screens felt better than that.

Trying something new... maybe I can finally get my values to be writeable without a sync point. Though it doesn't even have to be burstable, maybe native is overkill.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

I need to unify all of these so they can collaborate, plus all the orbit movers and ECS following. :(

Alt text for the image has 1337 characters, that's a good omen!

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

My old systems introduce a parallax by leaning around a different pivot, I'm still very happy and proud about how that feels! How much it improves situational and spatial awareness without taking away from intuitive mouse input!

If that is supposed to connect (continuous, ideally in the 2nd derivative!) into the open space camera, then I need to review my math here. The parallax may makes the zoom behaviour in space nonlinear itself, breaking intuition.

Greybox science fiction video game prototype, flat shaded graphics. Some red and a blue space ship close to a giant asteroid. The camera moves around and focuses on the ships, there's a clear perception of their spatial relation at all times while the mouse cursor just points at things and the camera just "does" its thing. (original R&D prototype for jupiter.blue)

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

The "magic" - Depending on the cursor screen position, the camera asymptotically leans towards that direction in its own frame of pivot and reference.

As the rotation focus is inside the ship, not only do you see other ships move relative to yours, you also see a clear, input-corellated parallax of every ship against everything else.

My brain seems to process that better than the flat-looking orbit cameras of Eve Online, Nebulous, Rebel Galaxy, etc.. (I still love those games to bits, though)

So I've been writing some fictional scenarios for my game universe in jupiter.blue, and it turns out that the real situation is more dire than what I came up to "send a message in art", especially in light of biodiversity and ocean temperatures.

I don't really know what to do, and by that I mean "how to live my life now", not "how to make my game".

This was set in motion by seeing the May climate update from my alma mater & its sister college.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPs9JdthcHU (German)

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

To be more precise, it was set in motion by me visiting my old home in West Germany, in a formerly lush rural area with large amounts of old growth and mixed forests.

The millennium drought Germany has been experiencing the last years has caused widespread forest dieback of apocalyptic proportions.

I had seen this earlier this year, too, but now with foliage on the terees that remain, I often couldn't recognize my old home anymore.

Germany is among the fastest drying out regions in the world.

jupiter,
@jupiter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Even though the west looks slightly better now, in the 2022 and before, it was just as deeply red.

The forests are dead and will take 30+ years to regrow, if replaneted.

I now live in Berlin, was dry to begin with, and now we can see trees dying and fields desertifying every day, the soil and heath parched by the sun.

Since there's a high chance of El Niño effects this year and the next 2-3 years, it will only get hotter, and likely more dry.

https://www.ufz.de/index.php?de=47252

Animated gif of the 2018 onset of the drought, as a map of Germany. White is no drought. Yellow is "unusually dry", all oranges and reds are drought, deep red is "exceptional drought".
Gif of Germany's 2020 drought progression, it only got worse especially since sustained dryness creeps deeper into the ground, killing micro organisms and reducing the soil's ability to sequester carbon, store nutrients, and hold water.
