Hey viewer of my bio. I simply cannot be bothered to set up multiple masto accounts. No guarantees this will stick to any topic in particular. My Bookwyrm (fedi g00dreads) is farmertre@bookrastinating.com

A #ham ... since 1990. Military space stuff by day, being a #dad, #sota, and #hamradio in the spare time. #arrl life member.

Just worked a guy on 30m whose QRZ page says:

"The picture at the top right of my QRZ page is of an ancient Greek vase. It depicts Zeus throwing a thunderbolt. Depictions of Zeus often show him throwing thunderbolts. Certainly our understanding of radio waves and radio propagation has changed remarkably from ancient times. However, I like to think that in some way we hams are like "thunderbolt throwers" sending signals into the air."

So, should we make Zeus the god of ?

MARS SIMULATION APPLICATIONS OPEN

"NASA is seeking applicants to participate in its next simulated one-year Mars surface mission to help inform the agency’s plans for human exploration of the Red Planet. The second of three planned ground-based missions called CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) is scheduled to kick off in spring 2025.

Each CHAPEA mission involves a four-person volunteer crew living and working inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The habitat, called the Mars Dune Alpha, simulates the challenges of a mission on Mars..."

@Whiskeyomega 14.230 Mhz is the normal 20M watering hole for SSTV. I'm kinda stunned that DALL-E actually put the text I asked for in the right place.

@Whiskeyomega yep I'm monitoring there just now. Lots of sigs bouncing in just now.

Fair... I took something like 20 years off. Only picked it back up a handful of years ago.

My 7th year anniversary doing the amateur radio activity called Summits On The Air. Celebrated by activating my 123rd summit today. Then it was San Gabriel Peak with a giant Buddipole and tripod and I only managed a few contacts with a borrowed radio. Today had a much lighter set of gear. Since that day 7 years ago I've made 1,906 contacts of which 1,563 were done using morse! Which was a thing I didn't even know how to do 7 years ago. 73!

Most historians agree that it's important to ensure your books are well covered.

There is, however, a lot of debate about the best way to do this.

Personally, I recommend a strong skirmish line.

7 DEAD IN LA SUPERFOG!

At least seven people were killed after a “superfog” of smoke from south Louisiana marsh fires and dense fog caused multiple massive car crashes Monday morning involving a total of 158 vehicles, authorities said.

I really need to learn how to weld. However, if I did weld, I'd be that strange guy with all kinds of random metal object sculptures in the front yard. 🤪 Really, just need to find some second hand equipment (based entirely on YouTube videos, not much different than soldering... except on a much larger scale)

kb9ens,
@kb9ens@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr A big difference with solder is the fact the welding arc throws out a heap of UV radiation. Wear yo PPE Ben.

I’m not a Californian so I just learned that in 2010 California adopted a top-two primary format. Candidates from all parties are on the same primary ballot. The top two vote getters advance to the general election, regardless of partisan affiliation. Given who is already running and the prospect that Butler might enter the race, I wonder how likely it is that the general election for the U.S. Senate seat from California will pit two Democrats against each other.

Well, we’ve gone from light, to moderate, to “heavy rain” here in Ventura County, CA. So far, it’s just like any rain here, but it’s only 2 pm.

We’re still in a relatively safe area, so I’m not too concerned. And yes, thanks for your advice, but we’re prepared and understand how to deal with flooding, wind. https://zoom.earth/maps/radar/#view=33.928439,-118.926575,9.6z

kb9ens,
@kb9ens@mastodon.radio avatar

@GottaLaff here in the LA Beach city area the rain is probably still moderate with occasional upticks. The 10 year old and I took a walk earlier and the rain is very warm compared to a “normal“ Los Angeles rain. Usually when it rains here it’s miserably cold. This one feels much more like a Florida rain or a mid western summer rain. The channels near us are flowing swiftly but aren’t filling up too much.
