I seem to recall hearing about something of a rewrite (or so) of KDE's Contact but for the life of me can't remember any details. I also can't find anything about it online. Anyone out there who knows more about this or is my brain just messing with me?

Plasma 6 Beta 2 released! We are nearly there, but more testing needed.

KDE Identity is gradually being phased out in favour of your KDE Invent identity, which will be used for everything.

Plasma and apps for mobile also getting overhauled for 6.

It's not only Plasma on the desktop that is getting a new version, as Devin Lin explains in his blog post,

digiKam, KDE's powerful photo management application, releases version 8.2.0.

This version brings better support for more languages (up to 61 in the works), and an improved version on Windows.

Look forward to automatic tagging based on content analysis and deep-learning. This feature is currently in pre-production.

(Not so?) hot take: user interfaces should not show event times using vague relative times like "11 hours ago" (I am looking at you, GitHub, but you're not alone) because it's a pain to compare with times of other events from my mail, chat, whatever.

No, showing the absolute time in a tooltip is not good enough.

KMail (and the whole of Kontact) behaves just like any other app. You don't have to use it and can uninstall it (or not install it in the first place) like any other app.

There is very little in Plasma that cannot be avoided or removed if you don't want it. Plasma it is not Windows.

That is a question for your distro, I'm afraid. There will be a configuration file or command for you package manager that will allow you to disable packages that are installed by default.

KDE does not force installing anything.
