These were my great-grandfather’s tapes. Instead of writing letters to his brother, he would basically record an audio letter, mail it, and his brother would sometimes use the same tape to respond.

Apparently the recordings would take place across days or weeks until they were full.

Fascinating. I cannot WAIT to hear all of these. what a time capsule.

Van Halen's final album, "A Different Kind Of Truth," is no longer available on any music streaming platforms. You can't buy a digital copy of it. If you're just getting into the band now (or getting back into them) and want to check it out on a whim, you'll need to buy it on CD or vinyl, or sail the pirate waters.

THIS is exactly why I'm gravitating back towards physical media, and why I'm digitizing my existing collection to throw on things like Plex and my iPod.

My music, on my terms.

FINALLY. I've wanted this thing for years and was fortunate enough to use my remote work stipend to get one. My hands are so happy.

For the past several weeks I've been debating switching to a dumb phone / flip phone (maybe a Light Phone?), but addiction clearly isn’t the issue. What I’m sure of is this: I’m definitely done giving T-Mobile $55/month for something I barely use.

Anyone have good experiences with Mint Mobile in the US? (I do realize T-Mobile recently purchased them…)

This came up on shuffle today, so it’s the perfect opportunity to remind you that @joeressington is an awesome musician.

Go find this album on Bandcamp!

The 90s were awesome because a song about a band's unabashed love for peaches could become a Top 40 hit, and the accompanying album could go TRIPLE Platinum.

Just got the Fakespot beta in Firefox. It's a feature that checks Amazon reviews (and other retailer sites) for reliability and then adjusts the rating.

It uses AI to detect fake or unreliable reviews. This was for a smart LED light bulb set originally rated 4.6 with 13,000 ratings. . .

And I'm seeing this kind of aggressive adjustment in rating for about half the products I'm browsing.

This is my iPod's battery status after playing music on shuffle for 72 hours straight. It probably still has another 7 or 8 hours left in it!

(My first battery rundown test)

This is remarkable!

@alerich Open source to the rescue! There's a project called RockBox that acts as alternative firmware. This allows you to change up the UI, play FLAC, and simply drag and drop content onto your iPod (works on Linux, macOS, and Windows).

Or, you can absolutely use iTunes on Windows or Apple Music/Finder on macOS still.

If you don't use RockBox, you can find free software to convert FLAC to ALAC.

When I listen to Rancid’s “Let’s Go” I feel blessed that the band gifted us with 23 absolutely classic songs on the same damn album. This record has zero skips.

Also, this record has one of the best love letters to music ever recorded ("Radio").

2023 was a bittersweet year marked by milestones & heartbreak. I'm not sure yet how I feel about it being over.

In 2023 I traveled to -
*Tenerife, Spain
*Brno, Czechia
*Brussels, Belgium
*Paris, France
*Montreal, Canada
*Fresno, California
*Las Vegas, Nevada
*Morro Bay, California

I moved across the world, then moved again within California.

I released my first EP.

I got divorced...

I'm exhausted, you guys. But I'm excited about spending 2024 working on myself for a change.

I'm curious how accurate the transcriptions are.

Having worked with browsers for a very long time, I'm just going to point out that making a modern browser is exceptionally difficult. There are LOTS of hidden costs and gotchas ranging from CVE protections, to back-end service supports, to even just getting anyone to work on it at all.

That's one of the big reasons a lot of folk just glommed onto WebKit. Someone else is footing that particular bill.

It's not impossible, but it ain't easy.

Everything looks small from a distance.

@jrconlin @dannycolin This reduction in transparency has seeped into Thunderbird as well. But we're recognizing it as a problem, and taking gradual steps to change. I wrote this blog post about it: https://blog.thunderbird.net/2024/02/thunderbird-in-2023-the-milestones-and-the-lessons-we-learned/
