Is 8GB enough for basic Mac usage?

I would love to see a test configuration that proves 8GB is not enough. Some setup that brings a specific 8GB Mac to its knees (using built-in apps).

Like, open a browser, open 40 tabs, open 20 Pages documents, etc.

I hear a lot of complaining about an 8GB base config, but I am still unsure.

@bynkii @davemark My last two work MacBook Airs have had 8GB and I regularly have a dozen apps open at the same time, with multiple browser tabs too

My property adjoins a golf course. And when it closes for the season it becomes Ours.

A fluffy dog butt and tail are about all you can see, disappearing over the rolling hills of the golf course. As far as the eye can reach it’s unnaturally groomed grass and perfectly placed trees. And my tornado of a dog.

Fall color reflections on a lake in northern Minnesota. I actually camped on this lake during a bikepacking trip, but for the life of me I can't remember the lake's name. It was beautiful and its water was crystal clear.

Pencil sketch of my parents, reunited in the nursing home. Dad is holding mom’s hand in his. Mom had Alzheimer’s, Dad had had a stroke. 2018.

Dad died this morning.

@bynkii TIL that Adobe FrameMaker and QuarkXPress are still being sold. Damn I hated supporting those products. Probably not at all what you want or need, though. I could ask my tech writer friend what they use on long documents - I think @krypted told me he actually uses Google Docs for his books…

Shrinkflation has reduced Wavy Lays potato chips bags down to 7 ounces. I vowed that I would give up potato chips when that happened.

In my life, I've seen them go from a pound a bag to 7 ounces a bag.

It's probably for the best to give them up, but it would be nice to be able to make them at home.

I love Apple's hardware, but what the heck is going on with the Apple TV? I've had to reboot multiple Apple TVs (latest model) multiple times just to get basic video playback going across several apps like Hulu and Netflix and HBO Max. You'll press play and it crashes back out to the main menu. Repeat. Repeat. Until you reboot..

@jerry @codinghorror We have four on our account, but now that I think about it, only one is probably the 4K model. Either way, no issues for us on any of them (with fiber to the house)

@codinghorror @jerry My 4K unit is zip-tied to the back of a wall-mounted TV, so it doesn't get a ton of air flow. I did install an Ethernet port there, so it's not using WiFi for the data
