Long ago I studied chemical engineering, still interested in science and engineering (pro-nuclear and pro-renewables) and politics of EU and Eastern Europe. I mostly post in English, occasionally in Polish, which is my native language, sometimes also in Russian and Ukrainian. I've been to Russia and Ukraine a lot over the last ~20 years, actively supporting Ukraine's defense effort since 2014. I almost always follow back. The challenge here is that fixing these social and environmental problems as we see them today means fixating (pun intended) the current state of knowledge and enforcing solutions some people believe are correct today on all population.

That has been already attempted, mostly in totalitarian regimes (because they were the only ones actually able to do such enforcement) and always failed disastrously as they missed some critical social or environmental dynamics.

The thing is that in a dynamic system, if you try to control one particular variable, the system rarely complies. If you try to control against its current attractor, quite the opposite happens - continues to head towards the attractor, converging around the variable you control rather than adapting to your intentions.

I’m not saying here that “inequality is good” or something like that, quite the opposite - I’m a huge believer in progress and social change. What the above paragraphs about dynamic systems mean is that any social change must start from changing the attractor, which in the context of the society can be approximated as a general attitude of the society.

If the attitude of majority will be in favour of conserving space, energy and caring for others, the whole society will transform regardless of even extremely egoistic attitudes of some people. This objective requires an in-depth understanding of societal dynamic and the problem is that while in physics we’re well into 21st century, the social sciences are still kind of sitting in 19th century methods and concepts, which is precisely why we’re here where we are today.

Well, the Green Planet Energy eG (former Greenpeace Energy) is an eingetragene Genossenschaft but I can’t see it having “least immoral decision making” if it’s been for years selling 90% Russian fossil gas while actively fighting competition from low-carbon nuclear power even outside of Germany, thus pleasing both Russia, fossil industry and climate change 😉

we’d nationalize those companies and put them under democratic control we would’ve done far more for climate change

Look to your closest neighbour to the East: Poland coal mining is 90% state-owned and because of that it’s most susceptible to the democratic pressure of the people earning in the coal sector and willing to not only continue mining, but also continue all state subsidies etc. Democratic control doesn’t always mean “doing the wise thing”, it often means “doing the stupid thing because many people like it”.

This part isn’t going to change without, once again, changing the attractor. So far the only way this has worked was through popular education and this is how we achieved massive progress in social, economic and scientific sectors over the 20th century. Right now we’re kind of going the opposite direction with all kind of superstition, anti-rationalism and pseudo-science being presented as just as reliable ways of thinking, on par with science and rationalism.

This split between conservatives and progressives could be explained by the belief in universalism prevalent among the former, while progressives focus more on diversity. From social and biological point of view, the belief in universalism (“everyone has the same values”) is a reductionist approach, while statistical diversity reflects the real world of biology much more accurately

The funniest part is that, of course, the very presence of this split (conservatives vs progressives) is also manifestation of this diversity. Conservatives, in line with their particular perception of the society, thus tend to position themselves as “correct”, while those who disagrees as “incorrect” 🤷‍♂️

The logical consequence of the diversity is that a postulate like “given decent options, people will do the right thing” is, in statistical sense, incorrect: social diversity guarantees that there will be some people who will outright reject “the right thing”, and each of them may have different reasons for that, including completely irrational ones.

Not that it changes the practical side much: the primary question is how to determine “the good thing” for all of the behavioural clusters in society (like “progressives” and “conservatives”), but then also how to accept the fact that there will be still some cluster that will reject any idea of “the right thing”, whatever it will be, and the society needs to live with them as well.

Now this reads a bit like Bible tales, to be honest... has replaced commanding officers of the invasion forces 17 (seventeen) times by now:

Chaiko’s dismissal signaled Putin’s decision to remove the commanders who had overseen the Russian military‘s failure to capture Kyiv. Putin’s reasoning for appointing Dvornikov and Zhidko specifically is unclear, although he may have chosen them because of their likely affiliations with Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Army General Valery Gerasimov.

Wszystkiego pierwszomajowego! Pierwszy Maja to Międzynarodowy Dzień Ludzi Pracy, uchwalony w 1889 roku przez Marksistowski Międzynarodowy Kongres Socjalistyczny w ramach tzw. Drugiej Międzynarodówki. Chociaż minęło ponad sto lat, a dzięki wysiłkom lewicy ludzkość wyszła z mroków dziewiętnastego wieku i leseferystycznego kapitalizmu, nadal wiele pozostaje do zrobienia i osiągnięcia, by ludzkość nie pożarła siebie samej, ale przetrwała na tyle długo, by Star Trek stał się dla nas rzeczywistością.

Przetrwanie Pierwszego Maja jako święta narodowego w Polsce może się wydawać paradoksalne w kontekście fanatycznego antykomunizmu post-PRLowskich „elit”, w szczególności wyniszczenia związków zawodowych oraz transformacji kraju w obóz pracy dla zagranicznych korporacji (likwidowano co się dało, by nas skolonizować, podczas gdy nawet Rumunia Ceaușescu utrzymała przy życiu istniejącą od 1925 r. Industria Aeronautică Română i Dacię)… Ale takie są fakty. Najbardziej lewicowe święto roku pozostaje żywe.

Ale dlaczego jest lewicowe?

Odrobina historii

Pierwotnym celem święta 1 maja było upamiętnienie robotników zamordowanych przez Stany Zjednoczone po aferze Haymarket z 1886 r., gdy strajk generalny rozpoczęty w celu wymuszenia wprowadzenia ośmiogodzinnego dnia pracy zakończył się masakrą na placu Haymarket w Chicago: Pokojowy wiec zwołany po tym, jak policja zabiła robotnika i raniła kolejnych dzień wcześniej skończył się przemocą. Nieznany sprawca rzucił laskę dynamitu w zebranych na placu policjantów obserwujących wiec. Eksplozja wywołała pandemonium, w którym zginęło łącznie dwanaście osób i ponad 130 zostało rannych.

Ekspresowe śledztwo i aresztowanie ponad stu podejrzanych doprowadziło do równie błyskawicznego procesu pokazowego: Ośmiu anarchistów postawiono przed sądemstanęło przed sądem. Żadnemu nie udowodniono winy, a sześciu nie było nawet na placu Haymarket – więc oczywiście siedmiu skazano na śmierć, a jednego na 15 lat więzienia.

Sylwetki anarchistów są warte bliższej uwagi, jednak na potrzeby Chwasta musimy zadowolić się ich ostatecznymi losami: August Spies, Albert Parsons, George Engel i Adolph Fischer zostali zamordowani w majestacie prawa, Louis Lingg popełnił samobójstwo w celi (wysadził sobie twarz), Michael Schwab i Samuel Fielden otrzymali zamianę kary śmierci na dożywotnie pozbawienie wolności, dołączając do Oscara Neebe.

W 1893 r. nowo wybrany gubernator Illinois John Altgeld ułaskawił trzech przetrwańców amerykańskiego systemu „sprawiedliwości”, a iście Kafkowy proces stał się jedną z najbardziej niechlubnych kart w historii amerykańskiego sądownictwa – i jednocześnie symbolem walki ludzi pracy o lepsze jutro. Pomimo zbrodni w majestacie prawa, ruch pracowniczy rozwinął skrzydła i tylko nabrał rozpędu – a jego, czy raczej, naszym symbolem stał się właśnie 1 Maja, uchwalony w lipcu 1889 r. przez nowo utworzoną Drugą Międzynarodówkę.

W ciągu następnego ponad stulecia powoli stał się świętem faktycznie międzynarodowym: Tylko garstka krajów nie obchodzi Pierwszego Maja albo podobnego święta, a jednym z ostatnich krajów, które dołączyły do grona celebrujących ludzi pracy – przynajmniej raz w roku – była post-apartheidowa Republika Południowa Afryki w 1995 r. Co roku jest także świętem dla ruchów lewicowych i anarchistycznych – a także starć z policją i prawicowcami.

Dlaczego świętować?

Chociaż może się wydawać, że wszystko jest stałe i niezmienne, to jest wręcz przeciwnie: Jedyną stałą jest zmiana. Dzieją się rzeczy zgoła niespodziewane, jak założenie związków zawodowych w Amazonie czy Starbucksie, inicjatywa opodatkowania korporacji w skali międzynarodowej, upadek Elona Muska i Twittera, rosnąca niechęć do miliarderów (którzy płacą mniej w podatkach, niż przeciętny pracownik, co ujawniła ProPublica) czy wreszcie coraz głośniej zadawane pytanie „co po kapitalizmie”?

Wbrew twierdzeniom pewnego Francisa, historia się nie zatrzymała, nie skończyła i działa i ewoluuje dalej, a neoliberalny, pseudo-demokratyczny system oparty na Stanach Zjednoczonych nie jest ostateczną formą ludzkiego społeczeństwa. Wszystko idzie naprzód, i tylko od nas zależy, jaką formę przyjmie: Czy będzie to faszyzm-memcenizm (z jego dziwacznymi stoma ustawami), czy też przyjazna ludziom i pracownikom, socjalistyczna, jeśli nie anarchistyczna przyszłość.

Tak. Przyszłość jest socjalistyczna. Pozwolimy sobie przytoczyć pewnego genseka:

Socjalizm to straszak, rzucany przeciwko każdemu krokowi naprzód, jakiego dokonali ludzie w ciągu ostatnich 20 lat.

Reforma ZUS w 2001 roku nie została wstrzymana bo "politykom się nie chciało" tylko dlatego, że górnicze związki paliły opony w obronie subsydiowania górnictwa przez uprzywilejowany system emerytalny dla spółek węglowych.

To samo zrobili z inwestycjami w górnictwo gdy ceny węgla były w szczytowym momencie. Słynne wtedy hasło "zysk albo w pysk" (i opony) skutkowały przeznaczeniem całego wypracowanego zysku na premie. Dziesięć lat później ci sami ludzie jęczeli, że infrastruktura kopalni jest przestarzała, do ściany jadą 4 godziny i przez to mają niską wydajność.

I dokładnie to samo robią teraz w kwestii dekarbonizacji, tu masz przykład:

Bogusława Ziętka jako bezmyślnego robola, którego można skusić paciorkami podsuwanymi przez "lobby", co zwalnia go zwalnia gobz wszelkiej odpowiedzialności za swoje słowa. Dlaczego by nie potraktować go jak w pełni rozwiniętego intelektualnie człowieka, który dba wyłącznie o swój prywatny interes i ma przy tym wywalone na interes ogółu czy jakiejś abstrakcyjnej "klasy"? Ci sami ludzie protestowali przecież przeciwko pracy w weekendy, ale tylko tak długo jak byli na etacie w KW by wkrótce "klasa robotnicza" pozakładała prywatne spółki zatrudniające tych samych górników w tych samych kopalniach, tylko jako podwykonawcy KW.

Przecież ja właśnie to zrobiłem - obwiniłem ich nie tylko o obronę węgla, co jest szkodliwe dla wszystkich, ale także o samobójczy egoizm bo swoją postawą doprowadzili faktycznie do zapaści polskiego wydobycia i zastąpienia go importem z Rosji.

bo to normalne i logiczne (z ich strony) postępowanie.

Zgodnie z tą logiką “nie obwiniamy” też lobby gazowego, węglowego i naftowego, bo “obrona ich interesów i przywilejów” też jest przecież “normalna i logiczna”?

Surreal news in where one of the most popular Telegram channels (1.8m subscribers) reports in astonishment:

Russian propaganda openly calls the mass rocket strikes against civilians in as "retaliatory". Hits against power plants are celebrated as successful, hits against residential buildings (such as recent one in Uman, which killed 23 people) are either silenced, ridiculed as "Ukrainian anti-air misfire" or presented as Ukrainian strikes against Donbas. After the winter campaign of rocket strikes against Ukrainian power plants Russian military experts expressed disappointment with its low effectiveness as the expectation was that civilians will literally freeze and beg for a ceasefire.

This time disappointment was even more explicit:

Tak serio to nie toleruję bluzgów a ponieważ wytłumaczono mi, że na język nienawiści należy reagować banami włącznie z defederacją, więc to konsekwentnie realizuję 👍

Interesting analysis of precision weapons capabilities from a Russian military engineer, who goes into great detail but I will just summarise his main points:

  1. Russia military culture never respected precision and high-tech weapons due to a specific culture of thinking: “in a proper nuclear war we won’t need any of these fancy GPS and stuff because they will be downed in the first place”.
  2. While there was a lot of research into JDAM-like precision controlled bombs, the top military brass never prioritised it before 2022. Only then they saw how extremely effective JDAM and HIMARS are in Ukrainian hands and a panic mode development started.
  3. You can’t develop them overnight. This led to quick hacks such as old FAB-500 with an almost home-made “precision guidance” add-on. But neither the bomb, nor the add-on, nor the carrier aircraft were designed for that so the result is a poorly adjusted mix of different components, with very poor aerodynamic properties and overloaded carrier fittings.

The result of deployment of such immature weapons into real battlefield were numerous accidents:

  • 12 March 2023 - an unexploded FAB-500 with parts of the add-on scattered around were found in Russia occupied Donetsk
  • 21 April 2023 - two bombs fell on Russian town of Belgorod, one of them exploded, another was found buried underground unexploded

My conclusion:

In line with the overall anti-rationalism that drives modern Russia, their army is also driven by stereotypes, preconceptions and personal preferences of the military hierarchy. The backwardness of their army is a direct outcome of that mentality and even if at this point they are forced to admit they were wrong, none of that can be fixed overnight.

Russian army accumulates huge technical debt that needs to be resolved at some point, but the hot war makes this impossible. The political pressure will only increase to freeze the conflict for a few years in order to perform necessary reforms and try again.

Russia will make any promises necessary to achieve this goal (just like they did in the Khasavyurt Accord) knowing from the very beginning that it’s not signing for a long-term peace but merely for a break.

That was a very interesting idea 2-3 years ago when I looked at it[^1] but seems effectively dead today as coil.com went out of business^2 and they were the only provider currently bridging the deposit side (user subscriptions) with payout side. Seems like it’s not really in the interest of the current large players on both sides, who seem to prefer advertisement and behavioural tracking based model with indirect payments, while direct consumer → publisher model in its simplicity removes significant part of the middlemen business.

question I’ve not yet seen discussed:

What happens if server admin wants to move from, say, to ? Is there a way to do that without essentially nuking all user accounts and starting over? How deep does the ability to migrate go, or should it go?

I guess, same thing as with migration from Drupal to WordPress etc. SQL export is always possible, but unless someone writes migration software to convert between each one’s data structures that can be only imported into another instance of the same software.

Najsilniejsze objawy bigoterii z jakimi się na co dzień spotykam to ta fediwersowa nadgorliwość w zakazywaniu wszystkiego co niezgodne z polityczną poprawnością naszych czasów.

Paradoksalnie więc hasło „no bigotry” zapala mi właśnie czerwoną lampkę „uwaga, bigoteria”.

Forma ma znaczenie, czego dowodem jest fakt, że w wyniku tej nagonki adminka odeszła za stanowiska, wprost deklarując, że robi to dla ochrony swojego zdrowia psychicznego. Uczestnicy nagonki wykonali podręcznikowy dogpiling bo jednej lasce nie spodobał się zapis w regulaminie instancji a "ogólny wyraz złości" najwyraźniej uniemożliwił jej dokonanie minimalnego wysiłku w celu zrozumienia skąd i po co ten zapis się tam pojawił, a stado popleczników z automatu się do tej nagonki przyłączyło ("barany" odnoszą się właśnie do instynktu stadnego). I to jest właśnie mój problem z Fediblock — niekontrolowane emocje jednej osoby są traktowane jako przekonujący i wiarygodny powód do nagonki, bez dania racji drugiej stronie. A wszystko oczywiście w atmosferze "my to robimy aby Fediverse był bezpieczny dla gnębionych mniejszości". No więc sorry, ale nie.
