This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/
So, I don't really do online subscriptions. But since @bitwarden is FOSS and has a real cheap pro account option, I pay for that, even though I never use the pro features.
I try to donate a bit to other FOSS stuff too, but not nearly as regularly, even though I know it's possible to set up auto donations.
I was wondering, could other FOSS stuff use this same model, would it be easier to give regularly if it was framed as an account or membership or something?
Like, would you be more likely to sign up for a "pro account" or a membership or something like that for for example #Gnome, #LibreOffice, #Firefox, #Gimp, #Inkscape, or any other FOSS tool you use regularly, than you are likely to set up an automatic recurring donation – even if the status didn't actually come with any extra features or perks of any kind, other than being a member and supporting something you love?
one of the quickest ways for a journalist to take advantage of a "Substack", "Medium" or other popular monetized platform in the Fediverse is to merely create an account on one that provides these utilities - Like #WordPress or #Mitra or #WriteFreely. (...)"
> BlueSky’s decentralization is a similar kind as with cryptocurrencies: sure, you can run your own node, but that does not give you basically any meaningful agency in the system.
> “Neutrality” and “speech” and “voice” and “protection from bans” is mentioned right there, front and center, in BlueSky’s overview and FAQ. At the same time moderation and anti-harassment features are, at best, an afterthought.
@rysiek in EVERY single case to date, moderation is either treated as a de minimus bolt-on (and usually handicapped stupidly, like in BlueSky), or initially boot-strapped well and left to flounder thereafter because it 'interferes' with the #monetization/#enshittification dyadic modality (e.g. Tumblr, DeviantArt).
App idea for Linux: An app where I set a regular amount that I want to donate each week/month, and then it locally and privately logs how much time I spend using the different apps on my machine and distributes the money accordingly.
With different options to blacklist some apps, weigh some apps more than others, always give X amount to some apps regardless of use, also give to things that won't be tracked (like the DE), etc.
My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.
Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.
There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.
So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?
Had to get a loaner vehicle from a local dealership because a 10 y/o car that I love needed a lot of work. So they gave me the latest model of the same car -- brand new -- which was vastly less powerful than ours, and kept trying to steer me between the lines and cause the steering wheel to rumble when I hit a line and all kinds of crap that just annoyed me.
The dealership probably thought they would entice me to buy the newer model, but driving it just made me more convinced I made the right decision to put the money into the old car.
@briankrebs The current trend to adding software to cars and making them more gadget like is a serious turnoff for me. Then add annoying driver-assistance functions and selling us services from inside the car. No. Just stop.
Which of those cars will be useful in 15-20 years? What happens to resale value when your car can’t get software updates any more? Or expensive screens fail? Just seeing lots of long-term headaches there.
It's been a while since I started my privacy journey, but there was something I always wanted to do even before I started to care about my privacy. I always have loved the idea of having a blog to talk about different things that I am interested in, and creating content of value for others, and not gibberish content full of SEO...
About to subscribe to a year of #zencastr, which I used reliably until they got rid of their free model, to record my #interview today with (hopefully) no repeat of technical issues like I had recording a #podcast episode with @dreamsequencephotography . Here's an example of why I have to shill my #patreon and #artisticNude#photography on #gumroad despite the earnest desire to provide free visual examples of nonsexual female nipples so that maybe someday we can have the same rights to go #topFree in public and online that "male nips" get: I'm banned from #monetization and sponsors won't return my emails, so #ebegging and selling nudes is literally the only way I can bring any funding in. I hate it, but what can I do...

Wouldn't it be much more effective to somehow implement a library that show hows much money FOSS software devs received, and how much is needed to sustainably maintain the project? We could implement this in all #FOSS project and would help slightly by the monetization problem.
The #Economics of Open Source talk by @evancz was really great, insightful and funny - and also a bit depressing. When someone like Evan can't release a feature because of fear of being "Jeff-ed" (outcompeted in trying to monetize by providing hosting by AWS and other large players) ...
It's hard to make money to throw at this if you're not one of the #Internet#Landlords
I know #Larian was very open about not having #DLC for #BaldursGate3 (they do, with the Deluxe Edition goodies) and put themselves into a bit of a corner.
But the well deserved success seems to have given rise to discussions on that topic within Larian.
Personally, I'd really like to see an addon to Baldur's Gate 3, if it's a well made and proper addition.
Yes, wouldn't that be nice. But this is, and works quite well so commercial operations can include monetization for content creators in the #Fediverse - as it should be
🤘💀🤘
I'm trying to excise "#content" from my active vocabulary. To me there is just information, and my goal as a consumer of information is to maximize signal-to-noise ratio, and my goal as a "producer" of information is to create something that will read as "signal" on whatever filters people centuries from now are running on the (hopefully at least partially preserved) archival internet. Inside me burns a fierce hatred of the very concept of #monetization of the internet. I hate hustle culture because of the #GoldenRule. I hate being hustled. I agree with whoever wrote the theme song of "Good Times," that the good times are those times characterized by "not getting hassled" and "not getting hustled."
The most important ones:
Make an #introduction post littered with hashtags that are relevant to your interests. People with those interests are likely to follow or boost your introduction for more visibility.
Follow Follow Follow! Follow people that seem interesting to you. It's the basis of "federation" across the fediverse and helps your toot travel to other instances.
